| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Looks great, prints badly I have had this printer for a little more than 2 years now. Its a great looker as others have mentioned, and its low profile is perhaps the best in the all-in-one segment. It will fax well. The included software is OK. But it is a dog at printing. I've replaced the black cartridge numerous times, and I only print perhaps 15 pages a month! Sometimes, I replaced the cartridge twice in a month; and even then it has streaking issues.
The real cost of ownership of this printer is unaffordably high. I'd say stay cvlear of it until a better one comes out of Brother's design team.
| 1 | Today | Buy a Brother = buy an extended warranty through someone else Bought this while I was a college student and it lasted like a champ for about a year and a half. Then I got the dreaded error 41 message (bad print head). Called Brother and was asked if I use OEM ink or not. I said sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Well luckily there was a recall on the print head but since it wasn't still under the manufacturer's warranty, I'd have to take it to a service center. Only one was even close to me and their hours were 8-4 M-F. So I had to take off work to drop it off and pick it up. They had it for over a week because they replaced the print head with a new one, only to find out it was defective and we had to wait for Brother to send another one to them. Got my machine back finally and it worked fine for 3.5 months then had the error 41 again. Called Brother and was told to take it up with the repair center. Well they only warrant their work for 60 days. Now it's a piece of junk. Bought another Brother machine - but bought it at Best Buy with a 3 year full replacement warranty. I know it will break within that time. | 3 | Today | We should call them "Brother in law" price head replacement under warranty is nice, right! well, how about to build something last a little bit longer! oh, my "Brother", I should call them my "brother-in-law", taking my food, my beer, wear my underwear..........
no more brother, brothers! | 1 | Today | Worked for 1 year, was repaired, died 1 year later but Brother sent new printer! I bought this machine 2 years ago, 1 year later the dreaded Error41 appeared (print head needs to be replaced), and it was replaced under warranty at no cost. Almost 1 year to the day later the same thing happened. I contacted via email Brother support. After talking with two very nice support persons on the phone, they agreed to send me a replacement printer, a new but cheaper Model 210C, which I just received, and I will send them back the broken MFC4420C. So I can't complain about their warranty service, however the machine itself has a few good marks, and some very bad ones. It self-cleans itself every time it starts up and takes forever. Print clarity constantly degrades so you have to clean it a lot. It's noisy, it smudges the edges of the pages quite a lot, it doesn't recognize new print cartridges when you insert them sometimes, it tells you the print cartridge is empty when there's quite a bit of ink left, it sucks ink like mad, and after two print head failures I swore I'd never buy a Brother again. So I purchased a new Epson Stylus CX5800F for $179 less $60 mail-in rebate. Much better construction and modern, not flimsy, prints good, but the copy function is very faint, very slow, and no way to adjust, so it's going back to CompUSA. I'll probably keep the replacement Model 210C Brother sent me as it's under warranty and it was "free," but I expect the same issues, sucking too much ink, self-cleaning every time you start it up, smudged pages, but it should copy and print ok, as did my MFC4420C. My recommendation - buy an HP, and forget Brother. Except for the fact that they sent me a new printer to replace my broken one, I'd never purchase a Brother product again. However, in fairness, my wife liked the copy and fax function of the MFC4420C because it was easy to use and the copies came out and looked good. | 2 | Today | LOOK UP REVIEWS B4 you even think about buying this 1. I had a lot of trouble putting this unit into use.
2. ATE ATE ATE Ink.
3. Cleaned itslef nearly constantly.
4. Like numerous other users/Complainers got an "ERROR 41" Message after maybe 1000 sheets printed(or less)- I am a very very light user.
5. Service center is 1.5 hours away.
6. Complaints about this unit are all over the Internet.
7. Beware.
8. Something should be properly done like total reimbursement by Brother for the problems this unit has caused consumers.
9. DO Not buy this unit until checking out the complaints. | 1 | Today | runs out of ink a lot and requires frequent self cleaning I've had the MFC4420C printer almost two years (since 4/04) and have never received the error 41 message, thank goodness. However, I am a very light printer user. Even so, even I have had a lot of ink and printing issues (explained below in detail).
What's great: the low profile design (best looking printer/fax/scanner ever designed I think!) and low cost. Also excellent print quality (when it prints).
What's good: the scanning and faxing is very good and reliable. (Faxing several pages requires each page to be scanned manually- no auto page feed for faxing). No comment on the scanning software, I use Paperport and no problems. Fairly quiet operation. Printer sits on my desk and I can talk on phone if it's printing.
What's poor: the frequent out of ink message. Ink cartridges have small capacity of ink and run out quickly. If any of the color ink cartridges are out, printer will NOT print, even in just black, until all empty ink cartridges are replaced! The cartridges require a LOT of self-cleaning. RIGHT NOW as I'm writing this review I printed a windows test page and it's all streaked out. This happens all the time! And again I am a very light printer user (maybe a 3-5 pages a week!). I've learned now what to do- I now have to run the self cleaning function at least 3 times, which meanings fumbling through the LED menu, and then waiting about 2 minutes until LED says complete, and wasting ink. This is a constant problem and pain! Because I print so little I can live with it, and use my old Lexmark 3200 as a backup (I recommend a backup printer for this printer!) I like the design a lot and the scanning and faxing works good. | 2 | Today | Piece of Crap I have had print head problems with this since day one. Brother support is horrible, ink cartridges dry out when still 90% full. Constant and repeated cleaning makes it worse. There are reams of complaints about this product. Do not buy it. | 1 | Today | now I know why brother is Cheap Because they make cheap stuff...that never works. I should have read the reviews before buying mine. I get the same 41 error and ink refill messages repeatedly. This machine is designed so you can just keep buying ink and if you are gullible enough same machine over and over again. It's pure junk. | 1 | Today | This machine still sucks!! What can I say except, "they got me, too." I first purchased this printer about 2 years ago. A week shy of my warranty expiring I got the seemingly inevitable "error 41." Brother quickly sent me a refurbished 4420c and kept my original one. About 6 months later, same problem. Fortunately I had purchased an extended warranty from Staples when I bought it. Staples also exchanged this machine for a refurbished item. About a week after that I received a postcard from Brother stating that with this machine, they have extended the original warranty by a year. I guess this did me no good because the "error 41" occured again 2 days after the end of the second warranty. Well that was it, three strikes and I'm out. I have never regretted a purchase more. | 1 | Today | Brother All in one machines with Error 41 I had purchased two different models of Brother all-in-one machines. One of them is MFC3220C and the other one was also MFC model and I forgot the model number. The machines I purchased had issue with "Machine Error 41" error. This error is displayed when the print head is bad or clogged up. On the internet, many other buyers of these machines were complaining and frustrated with this error code. I called Brother support and they had sent me a remanufactured machine as a replacement. The machine they sent also has the same issue and it lasted only 5 months.
I don't know if MFC-4420c has the same issue. But please call up Brother support and ask or search on the internet before buying it. After experiencing the same issue on two different models, I decided not to waste my money on any of the Brother all-in-one inkjet machines.
