| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Mixed blessing Many features of this All-In-One work better than I could have hoped for. The duplex printing and scanning is an awesome feature in a fairly reasonably priced piece of equipment. It is also very fast. Setup and maintenance is a bit of a pain and I am very technically competent. Others may have a much bigger problem with it.
Some features that you would expect (and are available on much cheaper devices) like manual feeding of special paper and such simply do not exist. You have to pull out the paper trays and remember which way to load it correctly in there. A real pain.
The worst part of this device though is the printing - terrible quality with lots of artifacts and lines through areas of color. I have run through the print head cleaning multiple times and it doesn't really help. For me, this device replaced an older color laser and the print quality is so much poorer, I am thinking about buying another color laser to do my printing on. This beast (huge size, make sure you have room for it!) is very handy, but if I have to get another printer to do printing, then it really isn't an All-In-One.
Some pieces also seem to be a little flimsy so I don't know how well it would stand up to heavy use. Maybe the next generation will be better. | 3 | Today | installation problems, poor documentation, poor support The printer comes with a printed set-up guide, but the installation and operations documents are all on the CD. Much of the set-up informaiton consists of cumbersome Flash animations. In this price range, it's reasonable to expect printed installation and operations manuals.
After going through the installation process, my systems could not see the printer. I ran through standard trouble shooting procedures: re-installing, removing other devices, deleting preference files, etc, to no avail.
I phoned HP support for the first time. (It ultimately took 5 phone calls and hours on the phone to resolve the problem.) On one call, I was transferred to 8 separate support people. Each went through the same script, insisting I answer the same questions ... HP must have an incredibly bad call center if they can't forward this information! Plus, the call center seems to be in India. I'm not going to complain about ooutsourcing support, but when a customer can't understand the operatoor's accent, that's a problem.
On my fifth call, I finally got through to a VERY HELPFUL woman who spent a great deal of time on the phone trouble-shooting. She then had to go consult someone and call me back (which she did). Eventually, getting the printer running was pretty simple... but the steps we went through were totally undocumented.
Once the printer was up and running, I found the print performance to be fine. Howeverm the HP "all-in-one" software has a complicated and non-standard interface. It also added itself to my auto-start folder.
Given the very real cost of my time, this printer turned out to be far more expensive than I had planned for. I'm very disappointed with the documentation, support, and software usability, and I will avoid HP products in the future. | 1 | Today |
