| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Key to Productivity When I won a PalmVIx in a raffle, I was determined to make the most of it. As an author, I had been frustrated with my lack of mobile computing capability and this seemed to be a godsend. However, for any extensive writing, the stylus soon made my hand cramp and reduced the usefulness of the handheld. All this changed after I bought the keyboard. It's large enough to touch-type at a speed almost matching that of my desktop machine, so I'm now able to write whole chapters on the Palm while I'm on the go, and come home to put them on my desktop machine. | 5 | Today | a sturdy companion for travel or home This little gadget does away with the biggest complaint most folks have with a Palm - you can enter data quickly without Graffiti. I learned the aforementioned curse of data input back on a Newton MessagePad, so I'm very used to it and rarely hit a wrong stroke. But I still love having this as an option for jotting down quick thoughts, whether it's at the table in the breakfast room while listening to support voicemail, or on a ferry to the Outer Banks for a few days off, I have carried and typed lots of data with this little guy, in places that a laptop or the larger fold-out keyboard would not be as easy to use. Sure, the keys are smaller (duh!) and the layout is not exactly the same as a desktop 105-key. And my Corolla is not an SUV! For what it's intended to be, this gadget is tops. As a desktop replacement, well, we'll just have to wait! | 4 | Today | Great idea and design but... I read the reviews on the LandWare GoType and the Palm keyboards and bought the GoType as a result. I had two issues with it: 1) Smaller keyboard was easy to get used to width-wise but the rows are too narrow. I personally found it too hard to not hit the wrong row (hitting the number row when going for the top letter row). 2) As reported in other reviews, it wouldn't keep up if you typed too quickly. I'm far from an expert touch typist, but I found myself having to deliberately slow down as I typed. That's fine if you have hours to type something on the plane, but not good if you're trying to keep up during a meeting or something along those lines. Product was very, very solid, but it didn't work out for me. So back it went. | 2 | Today | Nifty idea, but implementation could be improved This product seemed heaven-sent: a keyboard for my Palm Pilot, with software that didn't sound like the shovelware bundled with so many hardware products. But now that I have one, I see that there's room for improvement. The keyboard is marketed for specific Palm models. So why does it have that "one size fits all" connector that's difficult to use? Also, since the keyboard has a charging feature, it would be nice if the charging feature worked with all of the Palm models for which the keyboard was marketed and that have rechargeable batteries. Installing the software proved to be another headache. To unlock the software, I needed a code that was supposed to be printed on the CD-ROM envelope, except that the envelope was completely blank. The manufacturer's Web site offered help for situations in which the code was wrong (is that a common occurrence?), but not when the code was missing altogether. When I e-mailed customer support, I got very polite and prompt service that solved my problem, but why should I have had to do that? | 3 | Today | Misses key strokes It is a well though out product, but mine misses many keystrokes if I type too fast. Hard to say exactly what causes it, but I've learned that I have to slow down my typing and be deliberate to seperate the keystrokes. This makes typing somewhat tedious. I bought it recently and have a recent driver (1.6). I'm using it with a TRGPro. I wrote to their technical support but received no reply. | 2 | Today | Great product The GoType Keyboard is a very well designed accessory (although I find it almost to be a basic necessity) for the Palm III. The Palm mounts securely in the cradle and the keyboard itself is very sturdy and well constructed. It mates together very nicely with the Palm III. The provided software is easy to install and use. The keyboard may not fold but it is easy to take around. And the best part is that I can now type letters no matter where I am. I guess you could say that I highly recommend the GoType Keyboard. Go for it! | 5 | Today | Good price, but not the best keyboard out there Let me start by saying: there is nothing wrong with the Landware keyboard. It works wonderfully. But having just bought the Palm Portable keyboard (folding model), I have to admit that the Landware doesn't quite match up. The keys are smaller and the case is bigger so if portability isn't a big issue for you, then I heartily recommend this model, as it can be $20 to $30 cheaper than the folding one. But overall, the folding keyboard is a much better solution. | 3 | Today | Excellent product in every way! I was skeptical about the raves that this keyboard was getting and after trying it -- it's true! Great quality, great price; no complaints about it whatsoever. | 5 | Today | Great product, Great value We have both the GoType keyboards and the Palm portable keyboard, and while the GoType does not have quite the same "wow" factor as the Palm keyboard, it's sturdier and it's much better value - because it also comes with word processing software which is important if you want to type and read documents longer than a memo (and if you get the Palm V version it also functions as a hotsync and charging cradle). It is also almost as fast to type on as a full-sized keyboard as long as you don't have large stubby male fingers. | 5 | Today | Where's the word processor and thesaurus? I really like my new GoType keyboard, but I was a little disappointed when I found out that it didn't arrive with the TakeNote word processor and WordSleuth thesaurus that is supposed to be included when you buy the keyboard. It's promised in the advertising about the GoType on the Amazon.com site. What gives, Amazon? Other than that, it works like a charm. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to do extensive word processing or other similar data entry on the run. I do lots of document editing while I'm away from my computer, and this makes it all possible. It almost makes your Palm a replacement for a notebook computer, which is a nice capability. :-) | 4 | Today |
