| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Reliable, durable, after years of abuse. 4 1/2 stars By 2006 standards, this player is a brick, but when I got it about 5-6 years ago, it was pretty slick. I can't tell you how many times I've dropped this, or sent it flying across my dashboard on a hard turn. I've left it in my car during the hottest and coldest days and I have no complaints.
This is the player-only model, it does not record. It's no frills, big-pixel lcd screen, with decent battery life (Takes AA, and works best with good quality Nimh rechargeables)
I agree about the headphones, the sound quality is very good and it's better than my Audio-technica, Sony, Aiwa, and misc headphones BUT it pinches my ears and you can't wear it too long. Works great as an external hard drive too and I can drop and drag files in Windows Explorer and create/edit playlists in Winamp and Windows Media Player.
I'd love to give it 5 stars but in the strictest objectivity, it's got a few flaws such as accessories and every once in a while, I get a blue screen of death when I connect the USB cable (happens on several different computers). | 4 | Today | Pathetic piece of trash! It constantly hangs. Shuts down for no reason. And its recording capability is so unreliable that if it does not hang randomly in the middle of the recording, chances are you will simply not find the file after the recording is done (the file's just not there!). I am quite a wired guy, so you can be sure my problems are not because I am digitally challenged. The Archos is a very poor piece of engineering. Period. | 1 | Today | Nice quality, price, but a bit bulky I received this player for Christmas of 2002. I have since then put all of the songs from my CDs on to it, as well as some extra songs. The quality of this mp3 player is great! I recorded the songs onto it at CD quality and still have over 9GB left. The headphones that come with this player are nice too, except they can irritate your ears if worn for over about 15 minutes. A charger is also included, as well as a carrying case (though the headphones don't fit in it). The price is very good for a 10GB player! You can also use your Jukebox as a hard drive to store all of your data files. However, the USB 1.1 connection is not fast and takes awhile to transfer songs if you record at a high rate. This means that if you put the songs on the player at CD quality or higher, it takes awhile. It is also quite obvious from the picture that this MP3 player is not small. This is not a good device to use while jogging or doing active things, etc. This player is more for those who have quite a large amount of music and want to carry it with them. So here's the review in brief: The Good: -Lots of storage for the price! -Charger, case, headphones included -Good playback quality -Doubles as a hard drive for data storage The Bad: -Heavy, not good for listening to while playing sports -USB transfer is slow (but I recorded at 128-224kbps) Summary: If you like having nice quality music with you and hate bringing your CDs everywhere, this is for you! Especially if you want something inexpensive, yet has a lot of storage. This isn't for the person who looks to enjoy his/her music while active, though (Ocassionaly it freezes while I am mowign the lawn while listening to it). | 3 | Today | Good Player/ External hard drive If you're looking to store a large sum of MP3s this player is for you. Over all play quality is not bad. If there is a lot of noise around, like when your cutting the grass the volume just does not put out to hear the music. Getting a better head set helped out a lot. Battery life is good, on the down side the battery is internal and cannot be removed. I travel a lot to different countries were I can't recharge the player. Overall This is a good player and it makes a nice external hard drive as well. | 4 | Today | Good for the money....... until the hard drive crashes If your looking for an economical way to carry a whole bunch of music around with you, and be able to listen to it with pretty good quality, then this player may do. Don't try to do anything physical though, a little jostling and it'll lock up on you. The sound quality is pretty good, especially with some decent earphones. Download Rockbox firmware for a better interace and some cool new features. Also, be prepared to buy a new one every couple of months. Me and a friend of mine both bought this player at the same time. His lasted about a month b4 succumbing to a "HD ERROR" and mine lasted almost 6 months b4 doing the same thing. On the plus side I spent under 150 on the thing, and got a lot of use out of it over the past half-year. In the end, though, I would recommend shelling out the extra cash for something smaller, lighter, and more reliable. | 2 | Today | Alright When it's not broken, it actually works pretty well. It's broken three times, though, in the time I've had it. | 3 | Today | DON'T BUY THIS I bought two of these. Both of them broke. Apparently, there is a problem with the recharging device. It overheats easily, and disrupts the internal hard ware. Do not buy this. Archos does not even live up to its warranty. | 1 | Today | Good Buy I have just recently purchase this particular player and am very pleased with it. the storage capacity is great, playback quality is great, its small, lightweight, and easy to use. I definitely recomend anyone interested in one to check it out. | 5 | Today | My Mistake Buying the Archos was entirely my mistake. I was willing to put up with the large size and ugliness to save a few bucks but didn't expect the poor and weak sound quaity. It was easy to set up and use with XP but the USB 1.x is way too slow for use with a 10q gig product especially when you also want to backup some files to it. I found it too big and heavy to keep with me much so don't use it very often. I decided to part with the bucks and go for the iPod. This is what I should have done in the first place-it just doesn't pay to settle for less. The iPod not only sounds much better but is easy to carry around and there are tons of accessories for it making it useful in more situations and offering a lot of choices in cases, car tuners etc. What really impressed me about the iPod was the ease of use with and without the computer. Much more logical and a lot less button pressing to get things done-now I know what they mean when they talk about the iPod's elegance. clearly the software is just as important when deciding on music players. It is just a bonus that the iPod looks kewl and really feels like a quality product. Easy to see why the iPod is the top seller and most desireable player out there. I'll never go cheap again-it just isn't worth it. | 2 | Today | Bought it at Amazon, Love it! I did a ton of research, and decided to get the Archos Jukebox 10 GB. I ordered it from Amazon, and with the free shipping. I got it about 4 days later, but found that the LCD screen was not working. Called Archos, and spoke with a human with only minimal effort. They advised to return it to Amazon, and so I went to the website, and placed my order for an exchange. I got my replacement about 2 days later, and returned the broken one at Amazon's cost. The replacement works great. After updating the Jukebox software, I have no problem downloading all my CD's to it! Batteries last for 6 hours of play or downloading. I have dropped it a couple of times, and still no problems.. Love it and am looking at other Archos products. | 5 | Today |
