i bought specifically for a dated computer still running mac os 9, and the supplied drivers allowed it work like a charm. as others noted, it is only usb 1.1 if that matters to you. | 5 | Today | Ethernet adapter works with OS9
The SMC2208USB/ETH EZ solved a problem that I had been unable to solve for some years simply and cleanly. I have an old Mac Performa 6400 with only two PCI slots. One slot has my graphics card in it and I decided to put a combination USB/Firewire card in the other. I wanted Ethernet access also and have been trying to get it through the USB ports. (Yes, I know about the COMMII slot Ethernet card, but I have a cramped desktop and I use my computer extensively as a phone, so I need the modem.) Information on the web stated that the only OS9 compatible USB/Ethernet adapter was the discontinued Jaton XpressNet USB. I tried unsucessfully month after month to find a used XpressNet on Ebay. Finally a kind retailer responded to a help posting on a bulletin board and pointed the SMC2208USB/ETH EZ out to me. The SMC2208USB/ETH EZ, both software and hardware, installed easily and has worked well with my OS9 Mac for a number of months now with no problems. Kudos to SMC Networks! | 5 | Today | Did not work with Linux 2.4.18 Kernel, and I received no reponse from SMC Tech support.

The SMC website summary is wrong too. You need the SMC2209 for USB2.0. The initial SMC product listing is correct.

I'm ordering another one of these after losing one which served me well for over 5 years. Sure the newer stick-drive sized models have more tex appeal, but I distrust their little flip-up doors. As a network engineer who needs a second interface on his laptop all the time, I will tell you this thing banged around in the bottom of a crowded laptop bag for years and never had a problem. Also, I'd rather have USB 1.0 compatibility to work with older computers; your average Windows machine can't do wire-speed 100 Mb/sec anyway.
You just plug this thing in and it works. The model I had even came with Linux drivers, which was a nice surprise. Highly recommended as a dependable piece of gear. | 5 | Today | Be careful
The item shown on the Amazon website is only USB 1.1 compatible. The product description says it is USB 2.0 compatible. If you click on the "See ...other views" link, you will see a picture of a different model, which is probably the newer USB 2.0 model.
