| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Best WW2 game of all time I played this game over and over for about 3 months after it first came out. I loved the different missions and the various medals I could earn by completing various objectives. The enemy AI is fairly intelligent, although not always perfect by any means. This game has very high replayability and is definately worth picking up. It is too bad that the newer WW2 games are not as well done as this one.
Overall = Superb
| 5 | Today | Disappointing for WWII fans This is MOH's first major debut on the XBOX, and apparently, many faults are taken into consideration.
First of all, the World War II gaming industry has always been popular. MOH: Frontline, needless to say, arrived with great anticipation. EA promised an accurate, intense, experience, describing it with the motto "You don't play; you volunteer." Here is what they delivered:
The game overall is accurate, with real historical figures and real events, seen through the eyes of Lt. Jimmy Patterson, who were in such operations as D-Day, Market Garden, and Nimjigen Bridge. EA even gave feelings to the weapons, making them as authentic as possible.
But what this game lacked was gameplay. Many times, objectives are just to shoot blindly at some fixed target, with no real goal. Marksmanship is rarely taken into consideration in this game. XBOX was designed to deliver the best graphic quality of any video game console. The graphics in MOH: Frontline are a joke. It looks like something from PS1 or the Nintendo 64. Movement is choppy, the scenery and backgrounds look blurred and the software bugs are just too annoying. It is very hard to distinguish items from another in this game.
The overall idea of a franchise where centered in World War II is a great concept, but MOH just continues to disappoint with each game, with poor gameplay and just terrible graphic quality. | 3 | Today | While it can't compete with games like Brothers in Arms or Call of Duty, it's still a fun Xbox classic that's worth a try. This game truly brings back old memories. But by todays video game standards, Medal of Honor Frontline has definitely seen it's day and you get kind of a been there, done that, feeling while you play it. Frontline's simple run and gun concept gives it more of an arcade-like experience, which definitely turns most gamers away, especially with games turning towards more of a realistic combat experience (Brothers in Arms, Ghost Recon, etc.) But the pure fun of running through it's linear levels blasting Germans away is what keeps it alive, making Frontline worth playing.
The reason why my gameplay rating is low is because of Frontline's linear levels and simple game concept. In the game, you play as Lieutenant Jimmy Patterson, who is basically a one-man super soldier. Therefore, you pretty much go through missions alone and without allies, and when you do have fellow soldiers, you are still doing all the work. You can get shot hundreds of times and not be phased. This makes the game incredibly unrealistic. But on the plus side, the weapons, locations, and soldier uniforms are all fairly accurate at representing their real-life counterparts, which helps to add a much more realistic feel to the game. But still, for gamer's looking for a simple arcade-style shooter, look no further. But for those looking for more of a realistic simulation of WWII combat, I'd definitely recommend looking else-where, with my personal recommendation being either the Brothers in Arms or Call of Duty series.
The graphics are actually not that bad, considering their age. While some landscapes and character models & animations may look ugly at times, they certainly get the job done. Weapon models look and feel surprisingly good and will show some resemblance to their real-life counterparts. Overall, the graphics look pretty good.
The sound is one of the better portions of the game. All the weapons sound very good and help enhance the lacking gameplay. The voice-overs could use some work, but they at least help put some life to the characters. The music is great and fits the era and game perfectly.
The bargain price of $10-$15 is probably worth the money to add this classic to your collection. The single-player isn't incredibly long, but the multi-player is pretty fun and should keep you busy for a while. The game doesn't have a whole lot to offer, so it might be better as a rental.
The storyline isn't incredibly strong and could have been a lot better, but their is something about Frontline that makes it highly addicting. I don't know what it is about it, but it has an incredibly high tilt level and it is extremely fun to play, even if you are a one-man show.
Medal of Honor Frontline used to be a great game in it's day. But like I said, with game's turning towards incredible realism and more life-like, non-linear, open-ended gameplay, Frontline definitely does not deliver. With it's linear, been there, done that, gameplay, Frontline doesn't appeal to most gamers. Despite these problems, the pure-fun of Frontline definitely makes it worth playing. This makes me believe that Medal of Honor Frontline will remain being an Xbox classic. | 4 | Today | Loved the game despite some drawbacks This is the first FPS game I've ever played, and I really enjoyed playing it. The storyline and missions are engaging, level of difficulty is good (sometimes too difficult), and the weapons are very realistic. Since I have never played MOH on a PC, I can't really comment on some of the complaints other reviewers here seem to have, but I have had no problem taking aim and shooting down the bad guys. Most of all, I think I liked the human/realistic aspect of this game particularly coz I'm not a big fan of the sci-fi FPS games where you're shooting down demons (can't stand the gore in those games...but that's just me). As for the drawbacks, well there are some major ones:
(i) no save points during a mission which becomes very frustrating as you progress to increased levels of difficulty,
(ii) very lengthy game, which can be good or bad depending on your preference, but at some points in the game, all I cared about was completing a mission rather than trying to get a gold. One positive of the length is that once you complete the game, you can play it again and you'll still enjoy it...it retains its "newness" factor moreso than other shorter games.
All said, the game is a LOT OF FUN!! | 4 | Today | Not so hot I got this game for Xbox a little while ago and at first liked it, but now I realize that it's a piece of junk. It's like one man(you) versus the entire nazi army. you barely ever get help from your men, except in a few missions. I highly reccomend Call of Duty instead of this | 3 | Today | Too old Bought it used and after about 3 hours was too bored to play anymore. The only way this game would be any more linear was if they made it a 2D side-scroller. There is very little decision making or strategy involved compared to today's games. It is essentially a walk down on an obvious path that leads to different shooting galleries. Might have been something back in its day, but no longer. | 2 | Today | Winning the medal of honor must be hard... but fun! This is a really fun game. The beginning lvl to me was hard and intense. But still i love it! Get it for around $20 bucks new and you have yourself a deal. The graphics are good but not the best. Storylines good. I think its one of x boxes best war games! But be ready... its hard and intense! | 5 | Today | history game from the beaches of omaha so many americans gave their lives I recomend this game and the movie the longest day
are soldiers were so brave and the english, irish, french and french resistence. There are so many games that don't have omaha beach on it as a first person shooter. Brave through the Nazi defense line as LT. JIMMY PATTERSON as you take normandy from NAZI control I love history games based on world war II. I also recommend secret weapons over normandy just don't forget to put medal of honor frontline on your list. | 5 | Today | best game in a while this is the best game i have played in a while better then halo 2 halo 2 was fun but not this fun halo 2 you cant wait tell the end mohf you want it to keep on going i just think you have to be a big gamer to enjoy this or just like war games i hate 1st person games but this is fun get this | 5 | Today | Disappointed... My favorite video game of all time remains the original Medal of Honor, the game that set very high standards for the first person shooter genre on the PlayStation console back in 1999. The original game was a massive hit, featuring enthralling missions that progressed beautifully level by level, tight level designs, and a believable enemy AI, all presented with an epic war movie feel. Obviously my expectations for MOH Frontline were understandably high, given the reputation of this franchise, the plethora of postive reviews, and the capabilities of the Xbox console. However, after playing through this game I must say I was trebly disappointed to find it is not the inspired sequel I had hoped for.
Perhaps most disappointing to me was the fact many of the missions are directly taken from the original MOH and MOH Underground, and even feature many of the same objectives. While the level's environments have been designed somewhat differently, the feeling of déjà vu on numerous occasions was still a major let down. While this is not going to bother those who haven't played the original MOH or MOH Underground, veterans of the series will undoubtedly feel cheated out of the opportunity to have experienced a true progression in this series. For the most part, Frontline feels more like a reiteration of the previous MOH games (with marginally improved graphics) rather then a new game entirely.
Which brings up anther subject... the graphics. While the MOH series has never really featured impressive graphics, given the capabilities of the Xbox, I felt cheated on this point as well. While the character models are pretty solid and well animated, the buildings and environments have a rushed and almost cartoonish quality to them, with unimpressive and often badly pixilated textures. Sadly the game has not progressed much in this department from the original PlayStation games. Perhaps this would be excusable if the level design and game play was outstanding, but both are very liner and feel quite dated in comparison to the standards set by other Xbox shooters, such as Halo.
While the Xbox presents a beautiful opportunity for the developers of MOH to really take the series to new heights, unfortunately Frontline feels tired and stuck in time, unwilling to offer anything that hasn't already been done before by the other games in this series. While the opening D-Day level is worth a mention as a truly exciting experience, it is the exception in this game, rather then the rule. WWII buffs will still find the game enjoyable, but those seeking a fresh progression in the series or just an exciting FPS experience will sadly find MOH Frontline is a disappointment.
