| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Not recommended! This product worked well with my computer, but the resolution is way too low. I can't see clearly, so I returned it eventually. | 4 | Today | Worth saving the money I received the unit at 1 pm, had it up and running by 1:45. Only reason for the 4 stars is pic quality only 640X480, but all other factors being equal, probably would give five stars if resolution was higher. Very adequate for watching programs on my Sony laptop. | 4 | Today | OK for what I needed, but could disappoint some I bought this unit because I like to have financial news stations running in the corner of one of my screens. I do run more than one screen, so I do not know if that has a negative effect on operation. Installation took a few times, picture is fair to poor at best. The program is slow and unstable. The program runs ok on my desktop running XP professional, but won't run at all on my laptop running XP home. Its fine for what I'm using it for, but if I really wanted it to watch tv as a goal, I would have ended up returning this item. The USB feature is just too convenient. | 2 | Today | doesn't work on Dell Inspiron 7500 with Windows 98SE The product I received was called a "Cute TV USB" so at first I thought I received the wrong item, then I saw the Startech decal on the device (other resellers do use the Cute TV name). The manual was in broken English, and a little hard to understand. The instructions weren't correct and I had problems with files it couldn't find. I got past that, got it installed, and got an error when I tried to use the app "Init H/W failed". Support is non-existent at either Startech, other resellers, or the Taiwan firm that actually makes the product, so I returned it. | 1 | Today | StartechUSB External TV Tuner I have XP Home Edition. When I first tried installing this, I kept getting a "initial h/w fail" message. After reading the reviews (instead of reading before I bought) I didn't like what I read. After some experimentation, I used the Win98 driver instead of the XP driver. Got it to work just fine. Quality not as good as my desktop card, but it suits my purpose. | 3 | Today | Easy to set up, but poor video quaility I purchased this from amazon.com and returned it. It is very easy to set up, great price, however I was not pleased with the quality of the video. It is ok, if you just want to watch tv, but I need to transfer home movies to DVD, this just didn't cut it. | 2 | Today | Buy this if you are like me, enjoy listening to TV. Pros: 1. Cheapest external TV tuner with remote. Cons: 1. resolution limited to 320 x 240 pixels due to USB 1.0 bandwidith limitation. 2. Unstable driver on my Dell Precision laptop. Needs frequent reinstall of the application file. 3. Slow response to video capture, frequent frame drops even at lowest resolution. 4. Bundled application CD is not user friendly. You need to find your USB/TV application file folder from about 10 different supported hardware folers. 5. Bundled Ulead Videomaker software is two generation old. Need another $... upgrade to current version. I bought the Startech USB TV tuner through amazon.com with free UPS ground and the box arrived my home within a week. It is a brand new white (OEM) box with all the cables and CDs. I have a Hauppauge WinTV PCI TV tuner card for about three years. It works great while it is annoying to open a small window on your monitor while you are working on something else. So I bought this external TV tuner for my Dell laptop and now I have two monitors to look at. However, whenever I unplug the TV tuner from my laptop, then restart the computer, there is a memory error message. When I replug in the TV-tuner, the remote is no longer functioning. However, a quick reinstall of the application file fixes this issue. So you better keep your application CD handy all the time. My desktop computer does not have this issue. However, you could buy a internal PCI TV-tuner card (without remote) for $... with true S-VHS quality. In conclusion: If you are not comfortable to manipulate your computer, don't buy this (Startech TV-tuner). If you are looking for high quality TV image, don't buy this. If you are into video editing, don't buy this. If you are like me, enjoy listening to the TV but also don't want to miss watching any key shots, buy this TV-turner card for your laptop. | 3 | Today | doesn't work on Dell Inspiron 8200 Will not work on my Dell Inspiron 8200, tech support doesn't know why, they blame it on dell. Works on my desktop except on all the computers i tried it the remote control program crashed the moment windows loads. Returned it, dont' bother if you have this notebook. The quality of the video after it is compressed through the USB port is much poorer than a PCI tuner. | 1 | Today | doesn't work on dell inspiron 8200 Couldn't get it to work on my dell inspiron 8200 although it worked on teh desktop, the remote program never worked an crashed every time windows starts. Tech support can't figure out why it won't work on the notebook, returned it the other day. Don't try it if you have this notebook. | 1 | Today | Stop shopping and buy this one now! I've been looking for a way to watch TV on my laptop for years now. It's admitedly difficult to navigate the murky depths of no-name USB TV tuners out there. As a provider of professional computer services to many clients over the last ten years, let me give you my word that this is an amazing product. Installation is a breeze (I'm on Win2000, but noticed there are drivers for XP), without that usual hassle of "be sure to install the drivers first!" -- the installation says to plug it in, wait for Windows to detect it, then let it search the CD, and you're there! Well, one caveat, you do need to manually fire the software setup, but that goes easily. The software is not only very easy to use, but it's just simply very nicely done. The buttons make sense, and it's frankly easier to operate than the PowerDVD software bundled with most DVD-equipped machines. The remote control is *super*, even has a mute button, and it's so easy and fun to take snapshots of what you're watching. Remote also has a power button which will start up the application, as well as volume and all buttons you might need. Though it's easy to name the channels, unfortunately the name doesn't show up onscreen when you're flipping channels. It also comes with Ulead's VideoStudio, so with S-video input you can also use this thing to archive your videos onto CD/DVD! Before I purchased this, I went to several manufacturer's web sites, assuming I'd be needing to download additional drivers and software -- luckily I didn't, but I was very pleased to find startech's web site easy to navigate, drivers readily downloadable, and a decent support section. But you don't need to be as wary as me, just go ahead and buy this, and soon you'll be taking snapshots of The Simpsons and watching your VHS porn on you laptop just like me! | 5 | Today |
