Good product for the right price
I bought this hard drive for $40.00 from Circuit city. After crashing my western digital 2 hard drives of 160 GB each, I am hoping this would do good. installation was easy.

No problems until...
I had the 180 gig version of this drive. It worked perfectly for about 9 months. Then it crashed and by crashed I mean it "lost it's formatting" and I could no longer access the data saved on it. I am reluctant to blame this on Maxtor because it happened just after a power outage (and I was using a cheapo surge protector... my bad). Customer service was helpful and they offered to replace it for me. Still waiting on the data recovery though.

Good drive for the price
There seem to be a lot of folks writing here who believe drives never fail. As an IT professional, I assure you, drives fail. All the time, all brands, all types. That's why IT departments put RAID5 arrays in their critical servers. If one drive fails the others take over so you don't go down. But if you buy ONE drive, never back it up and expect it to last forever, you're asking for disaster. Both Maxtor and Western Digital make adequate low-cost drives. Yes, they will crash sometimes. You get what you pay for. BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!!!

Not a fan of Maxtor
I have/had a 160 serial ATA 100 drive. Worked great for less than a year. After a bad shut-down (forced by a locked-up computer) I received failure messages on boot-up. I attempted system recovery to no avail. I then turned my computer over to experts who are still trying to accomplish a data recovery process. In talking to them, apparently they receive more failed Maxtor drives than anything else. My recommendation-Go with Western Digital or Seagate. Maxtor...I want my money back!

NEVER STORE CRITICAL DATA ON THIS DRIVE
I bought this drive about 1 year ago and didn't use it very often. It totally failed just 10 days out of warranty.

What noise?
My drive is whisper quiet....I really don't know why others are having noise problems. Bought this drive to replace 80GB WD drive that failed within 1 month, Wd is not the company it used to be! I hope to have better luck with Maxtor, so far so good! Love this drive, but time will tell as far as reliability.

Inexpensive but not durable.
This Maxtor 160GB hard drive worked pretty well for about one year. The speed was good and the storage space was a good value for the money. However, the drive started braking down just one month after the warranty expired. Whenever I turned it on, it started to screech extremely loudly. After a while, many of the files became unreadable. If all you need is cheap temporary storage, this hard drive may be a good deal. On the other hand, I suggest you look somewhere else for reliable, long-term file storage.

Too noisy
I bought this hard drive to replace an 80 GB Western Digital Drive. I had no difficulty installing it, and the drive performed fine except for the noise. It is perfectly quiet while idle but very noisy when accessing the drive. I returned it and bought a Seagate drive with comparable specs. The Seagate is whisper quiet.

Quiet and inexpensive
Coming off of a catastrophic failure on my Seagate drive I decided to give Maxstor a shot. I just installed the Maxstor drive with a Fresh Windows Xp professional installation, starting everything from scratch. Installation was easy and straightforward. I do not see that this drive runs any hotter than others made by Seagate, WD, etc certainly no hotter than the Seagate Baraccuda drive it replaced. This is drive is fairly fast, quiet and easy to install, at least if it's a fresh install and not an upgrade of an oldish operating system that doesn't support > 137 Gb partitions. I suspect most issues people are experiencing are related to trying to break the 137 Gb barrier with an old OS. Price was unbeatable at < $89.99 (less a $30 rebate at ofice depot). Price was good enough to buy two and use the second and an on board daily backup drive.

Maxtor drives are crap unless you want to cook on it!
Don't waste your money on Maxtor drives. The're absolute crap. They run so hot it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that the drive won't last. I bought 4 Maxtor drives at the same time and all 4 have died. Only 1 of them was still under warranty and I didn't even bother to get a new drive for it because there drives really are crap and my data is to valuable to risk it. I have western digital drives now and they run much cooler.
