| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Slow, painful death Bought the 3650 in fall 2003 as part of a bundle deal w/ new Compaq. It was great for about the first year and a half. I was even able to print on cardstock, got great color for making flashcards, etc. First the cardstock started jamming randomly, then constantly. So I quit even bothering to try printing on cardstock. Then random plain paper jams started, becoming more and more frequent. It was really bad last summer, and I vowed to get a new one. By the time I had extra cash in Sept/Oct, the darn thing was working better again. I think humidity effects it, b/c this week - our first truly humid weather this season - I've been ready to throw it across the room. Lots of extra clunking noises lately - but that's good, b/c the more noise, the more likely it will finish the page. As for the cartridge life, the warning messages lie - you can go way, way longer than they imply. They just want you buy new ones. But this was my first printer, so I don't really have anything to compare them to. I guess 4-1/2 years is better than a lot of other reviewers have gotten out of it, but I am done!!!
| 3 | Today | It's so bad, it's almost comical. When it prints, it prints ok - about as good as you'd expect from a cheap printer.
The problem is, I think it's possessed. Clearly some evil force has taken over my printer. It works when it wants to. It may print 10 sheets without a problem and then jam on every sheet after that. And when it jams it makes a horrible clunking noise. If you print a multi-page document and it jams on the last sheet - once the jam is cleared - it may decide to reprint everything again, or nothing at all.
Sometimes it will start printing when you haven't Queued anything. You'll be sitting there, minding your business, and it will feed a sheet of paper and start printing. And when you check your print Queue, you'll find it's empty.
My family is planning to put it in the back yard and let everyone have a chance beating it with a hammer. I'd say, save up your empties for a few weeks and buy something a little better. | 2 | Today | Excellent printer Easy setup, works like a charm. Text quality excellent. I don't use it for photo's though, so can't comment on that. | 5 | Today | Great printer for PLAIN PAPER ONLY I switched to HP from EPSON because of the frequent, annoying and expen$$ive clogged printer heads. The HP printers have the advantage that the cartridges have the heads so you get fresh heads with each cartidge. The problem with this one in particular is that it works fine with plain paper, but don't even try to print labels (cd labels, or mailing labels, etc...) because you'll go crazy trying to align things up, since it prints perfectly in plain paper while you're aligning your artwork, but when you finally switch to the special label sheets, the alignment will go bonkers and absolutely unpredictable. After wasting plenty of label sheets in frustration, I accepted the fact that I just couldn't print labels with this printer. On the other hand, I could print on glossy photo paper just fine, and the quality was quite acceptable. UNTIL it began jamming. After close to a year of not too frequent photo printing, it began jamming to the point that I havent been able to get a single complete photo printed. I'm beginning to think that printer manufacturers should add "disposable" to their product description, since all inket printers seem to be made to last no longer than a year. I'm looking forward to trying a Canon now. | 3 | Today | mechanism error after 13 months The printer has been moderately used for black and white prints, and after 13 months it encounters a mechanism error, not printing at all. It is not worth fixing it, but buying a new one. Quality of prints was good, but life of the printer very short. | 2 | Today | Lopsided Product The Deskjet 3650 is good for general text printouts using a word processor on plain paper. It fails miserably on doing special tasks like printing sheet labels and the like. I've wasted tons of hours re-aligning my layouts just to print right -- and even then, this printer doesn't offset properly. If you're looking for a general text printer that's affordable and you don't do specialized printing often or can afford to waste time re-adjusting layouts, get this one. If you're busy and have about a 50% need for special formats like envelopes and labels, get something else. My old Deskjet 810c performs 100 times better than this junk. | 1 | Today | No longevity I purchased this printer over a year ago and it started out as a hardy little machine. As a student, I print out lecture notes daily and average 200+ pages each week. Like other reviewers have noted, I quickly discovered that my toner cartridges had to be replaced far too often at too high of a cost. Still, I managed to cut costs by printing everything in B/W and in draft form as well as utilitizing a universal inkjet refilling system (which is very easy to use and saved tons of money). I thought my problems were solved until this year when the HP deskjet became THE BANE OF MY EXISTANCE.
My printing needs remain about the same but my printer now EATS PAPER. Literally. I have probably wasted three whole trees of wasted paper in paper jams. To remedy the situation, I have tried to alter the settings - switching from fast to normal draft forms (and slowing the feed mechanism). This worked for a day but the printer quickly returned to its typical hungry self. I have also switched to higher quality paper - but the printer seems to like feed on that just as much. On average, the printer jams every 3 pages and takes 30 sec. to restart after each jam clearance. What should take 5-10 min of printing each day has turned into a 1.5-2 hour nightmare.
Unfortunately, all of my problems started as soon as the warranty ran out. It is like the printer knows when to taunt me.
I am giving up and purchasing a laser printer. The slightly lower costs of this inkjet are surely not worth it.
To be fair, I have never used it to print photos or to print color images. I should have also realized before purchasing this printer that it would not satisfy my bulk printing needs. But beware! You might like the printer at first and then it turns on you like a conniving monster within a mere year. | 1 | Today | Does work with Mac! I own this printer, and use it every day with Mac OS X 10.3.6. It does a great job, and I have had no problems whatsoever -- unlike with every Epson I have ever owned. I love this printer -- its at a great price point, and makes fine prints. Not great, photo-quality prints, but good ones nevertheless. | 4 | Today | Worst printer I ever used Won't feed paper in straight. Jams any paper heavier than plain white. Took back to store and given another one which does exactly the same. It's going back tomorrow for a refund after ruining a lot of expensive photo paper tonight by jamming! I will NEVER buy another HP printer. | 1 | Today | Great Buy For Any Pack -Rat. Thank you Hewlett Packard! This scanner is wonderful. I fell in love with this scanner at work. My experience with scanner wasn't good. I didn't like the quality and the flimsiness of the previous scanners but the HP DeskJet3650 is so easy to use and if you are a pack-rat like me you can scan documents on to a disk and depending on how you saved it you can go back and edited them. It is great for photo storing and you can edit and fix the quality of the pictures and scan on your "disk of picture memories" what you want. 10 Stars! | 5 | Today |
