I still prefer the larger external drives with a power connection to the wall. 4 Today Works well, but secure the plugs! This was an easy enclosure to mount the drive in, and it appeared on my desktop as soon as I plugged it in to my MacBook Pro. So far it has worked very well. However, as some other buyers have noted, there really is a problem with the power cord pulling out of the back of the drive too easily, which can result in a badly damaged directory. (Thank God for Disk Warrior.) I suggest securing your power and Firewire/USB cables so they cannot jiggle out accidentally. I used a thick rubber band slip-knotted around the cable just below the molded jack and then pulled around the drive enclosure. That worked. If not for this problem, I would have given it five stars. I am buying another one. 4 Today two enclosures, both failed, one destroyed all data I've had two of these enclosures. Both of them failed within a few months. Suddenly the computer (Mac Powerbook G4 for the first one, Macbook Pro for the second one)was telling me that the drive was not readable. I ran diskwarrior and a bunch of other utilities, even took one of the drives to my mac guru technician. I managed to restore the directory on one drive and it's still humming away happily in a competitor's enclosure. The other drive was kaput, data never recoverable (but the drive, reformatted in a new enclosure, works perfectly fine.) I blame the enclosure. I have a dozen or so other external firewire drives and never a failure. So to Macally, I say you fooled me twice with your cheap piece of junk, but never again. 1 Today Great Enclosure I went through 3 different enclosures, that all stopped working within 3 months before I bought this one. I've now had this enclosure for about 2 years, and it's still going strong. I've even bought 4 more of them for other projects. The option to use USB or Firewire is great, the ability to daisychain them together to save ports on your computer is great, and they work wonderfully. 5 Today Exactly what I wanted This does exactly what I wanted. I can swap various internal drives pretty easily. The only thing I dislike is that the on-off switch is a bit small, but that's fine. 5 Today GREAT ENCLOSURE I previously bought one of those Netgear SP101 Network storage units. It failed miserably....see my review. I bought this unit as a replacment, and it works great!!! Easy to connect and install. Just wish someone would make a network unit that would format NTSF. 5 Today CHECK DATES ON POOR REVIEWS! I have purchased total of 4 of these to serve as backups and video storage devices, 3 at Amazon. Quality seems good, no problems; better made than a couple of Adaptec enclosures I had before (one of which has failed). My title line refers to fact that a lot of the reviews (which I read before buying) note insufficient power supply to spin up large drives - but check out the dates on those reviews (mostly 2005, I think). I saw references in other posts to this being corrected by the company and it has been; I have been using 320 and 500 GB drives (Seagate) with these enclosures with no problems. Easy installation, and they work great. A great way to get a large capacity drive with less cost. In fact, I'm on this page since I'm buying another today as a Christmas present! 5 Today Great enclosure I've used this with a couple of macs, a Power Book G4 and and an Intel Mac mini and both times it worked fine and also used it with a Debian Linux system and Windows XP with no problems. I also swapped the drive a couple of times with no problems. My only complain was that the rubber grips slide out when you take the case apart, but nothing some glue can't fix. 5 Today Exactly What I Needed Bought two to salvage/use hdds from dying G4. Plugged in and running on my Mac Book Pro within 5 minutes, no problem. Bonus is the blue power-on light makes for excellent mood lighting. ;-) I have always pleased with Macally products - no surprise this was also a pleasing experience. 5 Today Failure rate is far too high I ordered 4 of these drive enclosures last summer because the one I had ordered a few months earlier worked so well. One of those drives was DOA and had to be returned. The firewire port on a second enclosure just failed about 10 months into using it. Clearly the quality control on these drives is not very good if a failure rate of 50% is seen.
