Worked GREAT... while it worked.
Well, this thing was FANTASTIC for the 6 whole months that it worked. Now it appears the pump is shot - i can't get enough pressure to push through the coarsest of grinds. I'll try customer support tomorrow, but have very low expectations. ------------UPDATE------------- After trying to de-scale with vinegar, which seemed to aggravate the problem, I bought some generic Kroger coffee pot cleaner, and some CLR in case that didnt' work. With coaxing (letting the pump suck water, then air, then water, about 40 times) it finally ate through whatever build-up was clogging the whole thing. I'm now gonna blame super-hard water and too lax a maintenance schedule (all on me) for the device's failure. Properly maintained, I'd give this thing 4 stars, only other gripe is the leaky wand, which is really not that big of a deal. If you wanna make coffee, yer gonna spill some water anyway. Recommend for the price range - although I did get it at a store that rhymes with Barget for about 30 bucks cheaper than i'm seeing it here.

Mistake in shipping makes review difficult
This product was sent to the wrong address-- one that was on file with Amazon and even tho I filled in the correct address it was changed in transition to the vendor. Be very sure to double check the address on your order when it is confirmed! As to the product, I was replacing a espresso machine that I have had for 4 yrs and this is the exact duplicate of my original so I would have to say that I am very happy with the product especially for the price. Now I just have to wait until I get to the address it was sent to to be able to use it.

Good for the money.
I bought this item after loosing a bid on Ebay for an expensive Italian-made Cappuccino Machine. The machine delivers perfectly good espresso and does a fine job of steaming milk. You probably have to wait a few seconds more to steam the milk, but with today's living expenses, the lower cost is worth the wait. I especially recommend this machine for first time users because any cappuccino machine requires a certain amount of care and maintanance, and it will make you appreciate your expensive Italian machine even more should you decide to upgrade eventually.

So far so yummy!
I just bought this for my husband for Father's Day and we love it. It works best with espresso ground coffee. I am pleased with the size and the power.

Excellent Little Machine
I'm new to the world of home made espresso, but I have to say i've been enjoying the DeLonghi. It's taken some getting used to, and i'm still using a blade grinder (looking for a burr grinder at the moment) but I think the machine is working quite well. First try out of the box made a fantastic espresso with a beautiful looking crema. I think I stood and stared at it in wonder for a few moments :) . One thing I really like is that the filter assembly comes completely apart for easy cleaning. The frothing wand works quite well, and is great for hot chocolate or hot milk. Took a little getting used to, but the frothing is quite easy and very controllable. Just make sure to keep all the pin holes clear or the froth just won't work out very well. My only complaint is that the built in tamper is a little hard to get repeatable compression, but that's the only downside I can see so far. A great machine and I'm looking forward to refining my technique for some really good espresso! Edited 2/19/08: I just upgraded my cheap blade grinder to a Breville and I think i'm getting closer. The espresso now sticks to the tongue and feels oilier, which from what I'm reading is about right. The crema produced by the machine isn't indicative of a good espresso either, i've noticed that if the espresso is foaming like a guinness, it's too thin and bitter. Also if you try to steam for too long, the resevoir heats up too much and the pressure just dies. Refill it with cool water and you're good to go. Other than that, it produces steam all day long, with no need to "surf the thermostat" like i've read in other reviews. I would also recommend buying a tamper, there's just no way to get the right amount of pressure with the built in tamper.

All you need for a great home-brewed espresso - besides good coffee
That's about it. The espresso part is great, the frother is great. No complaints at all. Never tried a steam-powered one, so I cannot really compare. I only know this one is great.

Not much to say about this one...
For $80, you should just buy a steam driven $20 machine, or a stove top. I couldn't tell the difference between this, and a steam driven machine. Mediocre amount of crema, mediocre plastic build. Nothing noteworthy or remarkable going on here. You can get an entry level Italian made Gagglia for $200 that makes this think seem like a toy. It's made in China, and it looks and feels like an underpaid oppressive working enviroment. Stay away, get a stove top espresso maker and save money.

I LOVE this! Great machine for amataur baristas! & great for Hot chocolate too!
I am not a coffee expert, nor do I have much experience but I love espresso based drinks. That said - I Love this machine! It is easy enough for a novice to use & make GREAT lattes or cappuccinos! I can even make latte art with only a few weeks of practice & a lot of reading on the internet. I started with a Mr Coffee steam espresso maker & after a few months of playing with that, I decided to move up to a pump. The espresso is so much better & it isn't burnt like the Mr Coffee & the frother is far superior on the Delonghi. The big plus is that it makes great steamed milk for hot chocolate. The neighbor kids come to my house & beg for me to make them hot chocolate now. I heat half of the milk in the microwave, mix in the hot chocolate mix & steam the rest of the cold milk - then I pour the frothed milk into the other. Here's a tip for making the BEST steamed milk! I put a bit of Torani syrup, usually french vanilla, to the milk before I froth it & then the foam is very tasty on both espresso drinks & hot chocolate. I definately recommend this espresso maker for anyone who is a novice & doesn't want to spend a huge amount on a pump machine. It works great for me & I am far from a true barista, just a gal who appreciates a good coffee drink that I can make on my own!

Simply not enough power to brew proper espresso!
I bought one of these machines two months ago. After experimenting with grinds, 1 and 2 shot amounts, tamping pressures, brewing times, etc. I simply cannot and could not get this machine to create authentic espresso. The results were always thin, too watery, not truly dark, syrupy, or similar to what even a steam driven machine creates (not that a steam machine is a solution either). I'm not professional, but I'm fairly educated on how to create the proper beverage. According to some of the world's finest baristas, espresso should receive 23-26 seconds of pump-driven water to achieve proper extraction. This machine pumps out a good 4 seconds of thick espresso, then uses it's "patented crema device" built in to the filter basket to create "crema". The true result is more like it sucks in air to combine with water to create a tannish colored foam - not the real crema that adequate pressure and interaction between that pressure, emulsified oils, and air can create. SO, in summary, I feel my machine did not brew a quality espresso, does not create much authentic crema. One of the major reasons is that the pressure is not adequate enough to use a fine, espresso grind! No proper grind, no proper extraction.

Just plain terrible.
As an coffee aficionado, I have spent more time making and drinking espresso than I could ever count. And in all my years, I have yet to come across a worse deal than this right here. If the only exposure to coffee you've ever had is a mid-day cup of joe from the local gas station, this machine is border-line acceptable. The shots it pulls are weak, thin and bitter. When I contacted Delonghi regarding the matter, they told me I was more than welcome to pay $14 to have it shipped to a repair shop in Florida, but that they were not responsible for defective merchandise. In its defense though, the milk steamer works quite well. So if you're looking to pay $100 for a milk frother, I cannot recommend a better product than this. Just hope that it doesn't malfunction though, or you'll be left holding the tab.
