| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Still going I've been running my Clie now for several years and have yet to have any of the major problems others complain about. I do occasionally have to do a hard reset but that's only when I'm surfing the internet and hit a page that's far more complex than my browser can handle.
The only major drawback I've run into with this PDA is the battery life. It starts off ok when you first get it but over time, it takes longer to recharge and delivers much less power per charge. When I first got it, I had no problem running the mp3 player for an hour or two. Two months ago I was lucky if I could run more than three songs before it drained out.
But there's always hope. You can buy replacement batteries online pretty cheap these days and they last a whole lot longer than the one that comes installed.
Decent memory, expandable memory sticks, good set of onboard software and I LOVE the little jog dial. Just watch out for that battery life. | 4 | Today | Started crashing after a year - Sony is no help The TJ37 is, when it's working, a pretty nice PDA. The camera is so-so, but OK as an added bonus. Don't expect anything other than a blurry, blotchy sort of pic out of it though. Battery life is mediocre at best. The stylus is actually painful to use for more than a few minutes.
On the other hand wireless works well, although it's a battery hog, making a bad situation worse. The screen is clean and bright enough. The form factor is great. I love the roller wheel.
The TJ37 uses a Sony memory stick as addon mass storage, which is a minus. SD would have been better. The screws holding the unit together backed out and disappeared, and Sony wants $$$ for them.
After a year, mine started crashing hard and the only way to get it back is with a hard reset. Even after running it with just the pre-installed apps, it still crashes. Sony wanted more to fix it than it was worth. So it sits on my pile of dead hardware while I use a Tungsten E2 and enjoy hugely better battery life, no loss of data when the battery dies (which take some doing - I can go for several weeks on the Palm, just a couple days on the Sony), and an overall better experience. Too bad the Palm doesn't have a camera, but other than that it's a better machine than the Sony for considerably less money. | 2 | Today | EXCELLENT! This handheld did everything I needed it to do and I would recommend it to anyone. | 5 | Today | Best PDA Available This is the best PDA that I have ever owned. It had everything that I wanted when i bought it.
This PDA is made very well and it is high quality. Compared to many other leading brand PDA's this is farily small for it's features. It's camera is not for printing pictures but it is good for taking camera-phone quality pictures. It's has a little speaker on the back for the various sounds it makes, but while you are using AreoPlayer (the program used to listen to MP3's) the speaker is basically useless. The speaker is so tiny that it can't get above 30 decibles. So if you are planning on using this for a MP3 Player then you will want to use headphones.
Overall this is a very good PDA and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good, small, high quality PDA. | 5 | Today | I traded up from an N760C.... I love the TJ37. It has all the apps the average user would need, plus a few more. It comes with the regular palm os apps like datebook, to do, and memo, but also has great features like:
*aeroplayer - mp3 player. Songs are played from a memory stick, up to 128 meg (I have a 128X2 and it works just fine)
*camera - good little camera for those times when you didn't expect to need one
*clie mail - email server for pop3 and smtp
*clie memo - draw/write on it like it's an endless supply of post-it notes. Comes in handy a lot when just jotting quick notes.
*clie viewer - quickly view any pictures on your handheld or memory stick
*netfront - good little web browser for your wi-fi
*picsel viewer - to view e-books and other documents. Can be viewed either landscape or portrait, which comes in handy.
A previous review was incorrect: the TJ37 does come with a mail service (clie mail) which I have successfully linked with my outlook.
The wi-fi was the selling point for me. Unfortunately, about 9 months after purchasing it, I went to bed at night and woke up to find my clie would not turn on. It had completely drained itself. Once charged up and hot-synced to get my data back, the wifi would no longer work. Seems since I had popped the memory stick out while the unit was off, it continues to "think" it is on and drains the battery completely dead, losing all data. That erased my mac address. There is a fix on the sony site for the draining problem, but it was too late for me. My wifi no longer works through the unit. After a couple months of searching and a quote from sony for $138 just to mail it in to be looked at, I found a memory stick wireless LAN card on amazon for 50 bucks that has fixed my problem. My clie is fully functioning again with the LAN card.
As an engineer, I find that the memory on this particular unit is more than sufficient for any data files needed for third party apps. I have 2 memory sticks (128X2) full of apps that I run on this Clie and I still have 16megs left on the handheld. According to Sony, it can handle up to a 1 gig stick for data.
My only complaints would be the problem I (and others, as found on threads on the internet) have had with the wifi going dead after a battery drain and the stylus is less than useful due to it's design. As for that, carry an extra full-size.
For the price, I highly recommend this handheld. | 4 | Today | Rotting Lemon I have owned several different handhelds and this one was by far the worst. It worked correctly for the first two months, since then it has consistently had problems. In fact having problems was the only thing it did consistently. I consider myself lucky if I can turn it on without it hard-resetting itself. I brought it in to get repaired twice and I would have brought it in again if I felt I had the time. Both times Sony took almost two weeks to repair what should have been minor issues. I have had the following problems:
1. Clie wouldn't' read (overpriced) memory stick.
2. Backlight stopped working.
3. DC charger broke.
4. Collapsible stylus broke and perpetually collapsed.
5. Randomly Hard-reset itself a dozen times.
6. Would not charge.
7. Would not turn on half a dozen times.
If you are thinking about buying this as a gift, keep your friends and buy them something else. If you want anything other than a headache then please buy something else. This thing isn't even consistent enough to be suitable as a flashlight. If it were only slightly thicker I could use it as a doorstop. | 1 | Today | Very Impressed with the QUALITY of Sony, yet again. This is really a fantastic PDA. It is a typical Sony that exudes quality through and through. I have the Sony desktop, and that served me well for 4 years...I'm using it to type this review. As with any fine machine, if you take care of this puppy, it will last. And like a fine wine, you will enjoy it while it lasts..perhaps 2, 3, or 4 more years. If you want cheap quality, or if you're the type to bang things up (like in the Motorcycle Rally, or Monster Truck Race), then this fine well-crafted instrument is not for you. If you're the type that knows how to use and maintain fine equipment (such as a porsche or Bentley) and don't want to spend more than $200 to PDA, you should go with this beauty. I've owned so many PDAs, and Sony's always tend to feel the most well crafted of all the machines. I think Palms come next, then HPs, next Handsprings, etc... If you buy one that is not a refurbished item, you should have no trouble with the battery life. It is easy to replace as well. Like a fine-tuned machine, you should carry it in a NICE leather or hard case. I love using the jog dial, listening to music, having a camera with a large screen, with a built in lens-cover...geez..with the Sony quality which is best for a PDA!!! And to beable to take advantage of WiFi hotspots from your pocket/purse without having to lug around a laptop...priceless!! For under $200, this has everything...this screams take me and never wish for more (unless you want to spend more). Funny, I never had any problems with the screen breaking due to heat in my toaster of a car... must be those darned Palm people leaving those sorts of reviews! Bah humbug! Oh yeah, I have a Sony laptop that is just a dream to own. A beautifully well-crafted thing! And no, I'm not from Sony...just a fan who's benefitted from their products and superior factories / materials / craftsmenship. I had a Palm PDA, when it first came out, I like palms, but they just don't feel as nice as a Sony Clie. Plus I wanted a camera included, you never know when the opportunity to snap a pic comes up: a beautiful bird, car accident documentation, emailing a pic to a friend to see if he likes something. | 5 | Today | [IMPORTANT]Good ways to NOT let your Sony Clie break You may have read some of the other reviews here some criticizing this product. But face it, if you got a really good sony clie would you come back and review it? Well most people say no. But some people say yes. So only a small percentage of owners of sonly clie of people actually dont like this product. THIS PRODUCT TRULY IS THE BEST IF YOU KNOW HOW TO CARE FOR IT!!!
Here are some key problems that are being complained about:
Short battery
Delicate screen
Small stylus
Digitizer problems
Here are solutions to all of them (it may cost up to $40 though):
Short battery ~ If your palm has a short battery, dont think this is just a design problem. Your palm IS defected if you have batter drainage while the unit is off or short battery time.
Delicate screen ~ Buy a case, it always works. (unless you drop it from 30 feet) The case also lets you fix the next problem:
Small stylus ~ Use an old stylus or something and stick it in your case pocket. Now you have another stylus. (Hopefully a better one.)
Digitizer problem ~ Same as Delicate screen... GET A GOOD CASE. One that fits your style but is also protective.
Thanks amazon.com for letting me explain how to fix these various problems.
| 5 | Today | Great PDA for PDA functions People are asking too much for a PDA to be a PDA. If you want to get an all-in-one device, then get a smartphone/black-berry kind of thing. This is a PDA and it worked well for me. The only thing that doesn't come with it is the voice recorder (but you can alway make some notes). I got it for about $155 brand new in the box, and I think it's worth for the price.
Sony screen resolution is alway the best. Internet connection is great. Yes, you need an extra memory stick (but it's cheaper now with 512MB MS-Pro for about $55 online). Sony stops making PDAs. Therefore, these PDA will be "collectable" Sony brand PDAs soon. | 4 | Today | Clie is the palm to go with I read through many reviews on amazon before buying so I thought I would give my opinion on some of the issues. The two biggest complaints I saw were about the stylus being too small and the battery being too delicate. I was a little worries about the stylus because I write a lot (actually wore out my last palm's writing surface), but I figured I would carry my own stylus. This was not necessary because the Clie stylus is great! I have no idea what the complaints were based on. It is a retractable stylus, meaning it is small when you remove it but it extends to the length of a normal, comfortable stylus. In fact, the design is very smart :) As for the battery, mine works great -- although I've only had the Clie a few weeks. however, I imagine that some people who were complaining about battery failure did not take care of the battery. Every lithium battery is delicate. The best way to preserve the life of your batter is to calibrate it once every 3 months. This means completely draining the battery down to 0 before charging it up again. if you don't do this your battery life will become less and less over time. In conclusion, this is the best Palm I've ever used. It is snappy, runs 3rd party apps very well, has an easy to use launcher, nice graphics, camera takes nice pictures, wireless works great (although it supports limited encryption types), all in all a great purchase :) | 5 | Today |
