| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Great Timer, Crappy Probe I got this for Christmas this past year, and I love it! It takes all the guess work out of roasting meats rare, medium, etc. We used it Christmas night for the roast beast! What I do no love is the shoddy probe. I am now ordering my second replacement probe. The first one went crazy after about 6 months, said everything was 69 degrees. The replacement lasted about 3 months, and now says my kitchen (never mind when I put it IN the meat) is 298 degrees. I love the timer because it is great, but replacing probes every few months is getting OLD! | 2 | Today | Total Crap Right out of the box it was defective. Said that my roast was 380 degrees when I pulled it out of the fridge. Tested in on a cooked roast, said that the temperature was too high to measure at ver 450 degrees. Riiiiiiiight.
Utter piece of garbage, this product. | 1 | Today | Well worth the money Read several reviews on this product and found most of the negitive to be user errors. Since purchasing this product, I have used it several times. I even used it while pulling the smoker down the highway and the magnetic feet kept it in place. Several people complained about it not having an shutoff switch, I found that the batteries last a long time and didn't need to be shutoff. The probe worked well and the cord was as good as my other one that I also use everytime I smoke. It's good to have more than one of these for multiple pieces of meat. | 5 | Today | Great thermometer but it has its ups and downs Its great. I bought it for school for making sponge cakes, Italian Meringue, and cooking sugar. I haven't regretted spending the money on it yet. The timer on it is also conveniently useful. However The cord does burn easily and when it does the temperature reading doesnt work very well so you must be careful when using near an open flame. Also This doesnt have an on and off switch so I have to continually take the battery out when not in use. | 4 | Today | Only used it twice... The first time I used it, it was fine. The second time, when the probe was unplugged it read the temp as "lo". When the probe was plugged in, it read "hi" and beeped continually. The probe tip was not inserted into anything to be reading a temperature! I'll try a replacement and let you know how that works. Good think I didn't wait too long to try it! | 1 | Today | Works fine but I have only used it twice so far No problems with this unit yet. I am using it in my vertical smoker, even though the instructions state not to use it in a smoker or grill. But I figure that the smoker is only used to about 290 Degrees at the most, so I don't see how it will hurt. The only other thing I don't care for is that there is no "Off" button on it, the display is always on. I guess thats because you could use it as a plain timer if you like, but it makes me wonder about battery life. | 4 | Today | broken on first use I received this about a month ago, but didn't use it until earlier this week.
It worked for about 20 minutes, then broke.
I was cooking chicken at 350 degrees in my oven, and I noticed that the temperature was going up very quickly - like 2 degrees a second. When it reached 170 degrees, I checked with a simple analog instant-read thermometer, and was disappointed to see that the meat was actually only 140 degrees.
So I left the chicken in the oven to cook for longer, and 10 minutes later the Polder readout started going wacko - all the way up to 388 degrees before it simply read: "HI."
I checked again with the analog thermometer until I got the chicken cooked to a safe temperature.
The chicken turned out fine, but this Polder thermometer is a turkey. :) | 1 | Today | Not for the Grill! I ordered the similar Polder Classic thermometer/timer (the same unit as this except for the color) based on the strength of the positive reviews. It is an excellent timer, functionally very easy and intuitive to use. I even checked the accuracy of the temperature probe prior to use, and it was very good (read 32 degrees exactly; boiling was 2 degrees low--really quite good for an inexpensive device!) However, despite being very careful about routing the temperature probe cord away from the grill grates and up/away from the flames, the probe immediately died when I tried to use it on some thick steaks. I assume the heat (550 degrees inside the grill) was too much for it. I don't know how others got it to work (some did, some did not)--perhaps it is poor quality control, and some probes are OK, but this one is going back.... | 1 | Today | Nice!! Just what I was hoping for when I bought it. The ability to monitor the temperature accurately while it's in the oven--without having to open the door all of the time. Purchsed for prime-rib, used for a variety of other items. :) | 5 | Today | didnt work in our bbq I bought this for our bbq and it didn't work from the start - used it on hamburgers - temp reading would show as being above the 160F target temp when the meat was red inside - sent it back and Amazon refunded with no probs - will probably try the forks with thermometer next time. | 1 | Today |
