HP ScanJet 5590 Digital FlatBed Scanner
Quality-wise, this scanner is fine for my needs; I am scanning old photos for archiving and the software that comes with it is easy-to-use and I was impressed with how easy it was to fix up photos, albeit I was looking for something quick.
That being said, I would not recommend this scanner for the following reasons:
1) It locks up in the middle of scanning, so you have to periodically save your images. This seems random and on two occasions I've had to re-scan a number of photos. The scanner just gets stuck and stops responding until I do a cold re-start, which means pulling the plug.
2) The ADF is useless. I couldn't get it to take anything in without jamming, if it even took the paper in. It's the reason I got the scanner and a big reason why I am returning it..
3) The price is ridiculous for this thing; it's bulky and the ADF is useless. I don't really see how it's any better than a cheaper scanner, as the the price is inflated by the useless ADF scanner.

The automatic document feeder always jams. Not periodically, not sporadically, but definitely. This is on pristine, clean, perfect input documents. Do not waste your money on this piece of garbage. I was a little concerned about buying this after reading some of the negative reviews but I'm happy to say it works quite well. Were using this at home to scan real estate docs & it handles the mix of letter & legal size pages just fine with no jamming (thus far anyway). Its not nearly as fast as the scanner at the office but that one cost about 5X more$! The good thing about going with HP is they have great support & software updates. It's unbelievable how loud this scanner is. I have had it jam up on duplexes with documents more than 20 pages, so I don't risk it and only scan 15 at a time. I do like the automatic feed and use that option 90% of the time. But wow...it is so loud that I try to only use it after 5pm, when most of my officemates have left. Overview: I've been using the 5590 through a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine for over two years (probably closer to three) without any major incidents. The 5590 is a good scanner, but the included software definitely leaves things to be desired.
First, I'm not using HP's software, I'm using VueScan, which is a third-party interface program for almost all modern scanners.
Onto the 5590: This is not a high load production scanner, but it does fine as a low-use SOHO ADF / flatbed / transparency scanner. If you do any of these functions in high volume, then you'll want a dedicated scanner for that purpose.
Color and Scan Quality: I can't speak for the OEM software, and I've never calibrated the scanner, so I can't give a technical discussion of the scanner's color quality, but I've never noticed any major color distortions. Using a function like Corel Photo-Paint's "Auto Adjust" tends to fix most color, brightness, or contrast issues that I've had with the scanner.
I have no problems with the optical quality of the scanning. I've only used the full 2400dpi optical resolution for scanning negatives, but then I resample the image down to 1200dpi or lower in an image editing program.
The Auto Document Feeder Function: I tend to scan about 50-100 pages once every other month (scanning in bills and other important documents). Yes, it's jammed on me a few times, but I've always been able to pull out the jammed paper without incident. The top of the ADF lifts up, so there is easy access to at least part of the ADF mechanism.
The ADF mechanism does seem low-quality, but it does it job without major incident. The ADF is good for text-only document (black and white) scanning, so if you need to copy color graphics, then you'll need to get a dedicated ADF color scanner. Also, I've never used the duplexing option, so I can't speak to that. If I need to scan a two-sided multi-page document, I tend to manually scan the top side and bottom side, and then manually merge the pages in Adobe Acrobat. Anyway, unless an ADF scanner has dual CCD sensors (one for each side) aka "one pass duplexing," duplexing is bound to be problematic.
Flatbed Function: It works. I can't really compare the speed to other scanners, but it's fast enough for my use. The lid of the flatbed is white, except for the ADF mechanism opening, where the mechanism is visible. So, one may need to use white cardstock when the required scan area is larger than the document being scanned. The lid floats, which is great for books, but with the ADF mechanism, the weight may be too much for older, delicate books (thin pages, damaged bindings, etc.)
Transparency Function: I've used this to scan a few 35mm negatives every now and then. With the 2400dpi scan resolution, you'll be able to get scans large enough for quality 4x6 prints. If you're looking to scan in a lot of negatives on a regular basis, then you'll want a dedicated negative/slide scanner.
Bundled Windows Software: ReadIris and Presto PageManager are essentially useless, especially if you already have Adobe Acrobat. For those that don't, with Acrobat Reader and other free PDF software, you'll probably be able to match, if not beat the functionality (OCR and document management) of these programs.

Final Thoughts: This is a good entry-level multi-use scanner as long you have a decent level of proficiency with computers. The OEM interface software and bundled software are just dead weight. The scanner is not designed for heavy use or abuse, so if you need a medium or high volume ADF scanner or negative scanner, dig deeper into your wallet and look for a dedicated scanner. | 4 | Today | AMAZING!
All I can say is WOW. And I mean WOW! Where do I start... well first of all I had no problem hooking it up which is nice. I downloaded the drivers and software off hp website instead of using the cd because I always want to get the latest versions. I was iffy about buying this thing because of the reviews but I mean I almost cried when I used it and saw how much time it saved me. I run a business out of my house, insurance to be exact, and I each application I write has about 10 or so pages give or take. Usually I dreaded scanning the pages and have actually been putting it off for a long time because it would take so long for with my old flat bed scanner naming this page flipping it over etc etc. I would use spend long nights doing it with a glass of brandy. I hooked this thing up and with the automatic feeder and the ability to default it to .pdf like the company prefers and even the ability to scan front and back without having to do anything extra accept have a box checked is amazing. I literally just finished scanning two policies in less than 5 minutes and took the time to get up and go tell my wife how happy I was during the time. I have done several policies since then and have not had a single problem with the auto feeder like most people have, maybe I am just lucky. Or maybe it is because I only put about 10 sheets in at a time I not sure how many the other people are putting in but I absolutely love this scanner. It is my second favorite business item I have now next to GPS. I don't even want to think about business life without either one of those things. | 5 | Today | HP Scanjet 5590 is an Excellent Buy
The Scanner arrived within a few days of ordering with the plate glass broken. The return was so easy and Amazon was so accommodating - I received a new one within a couple days. The scanner is great for my small business use. Quality of documents and photos - and even slides - is excellent. The scanned images are easy to work with, edit and move around.
