| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Horrible network performance, very poor software. We bought one for our office, and proceeded to waste a lot of time trying to get it to print as a network printer. Brother's software is bug-ridden, and didn't install cleanly on any of our Windows machines. And online support is a joke. This printer worked fine on one machine, but is a terrible waste of time for network printing. You can't simply set this up as a regular printer, but must go through Brother's proprietary software for every print. A real pain. | 1 | Today | Great Printer--Really Badly Designed Software At one time, the QL-550 was my favorite label printer, mostly because I liked its print quality better than DYMO's. When I upgraded to Mac OS X Leopard, however, I ran into problems. Installing Brother's "Leopard-compatible" driver and label software worked fine, and the label printer worked great. Unfortunately, installing the Brother software "broke" around 20 of my previously installed programs, including Microsoft Office 2008, Logic Pro, and Adobe Creative Suite CS3. I don't know if reinstalling each of these programs after installing the Brother software will work, as I don't have the patience to hassle with it. I'm instead doing a complete reinstall of my main hard drive's contents (pre-Brother) from Time Machine.
This is a great printer, but until Brother comes up with software installers that don't cause problems for other installed programs, I can't recommend this printer for Mac users. | 1 | Today | Makes name tags for our meetings Perfect portable unit we take with us with our laptop to make name badges at an offsite meeting venue. Costs far less than other products designed for this purpose. We even were able to add our logo.
Great value. | 5 | Today | Excellent Label Printer This label printer does exactly what was made to do and does it well. I sell books on Amazon and use this to print labels. It does an excellent job. The included software makes it easy to create a database of names and addresses that you can use with the labels. You can also easily import graphic images and put the images on the labels. I had thought about saving a little money and getting the model that doesn't support automatic cutting of the labels and am glad that I didn't. The labels print quickly and don't smudge if you rub them. The printer can use an assortment of different size and types of labels . The labels come on a roll that is very easy to insert into the printer (it's almost foolproof). Easy to turn off and back on to conserve power. Takes up very little desk space and connects easily via USB.I've had mine for over a month and an very glad that I finally bought one. I can't think of one negative thing to say about this printer. | 5 | Today | I Love My P-Touch The P-Touch Label Maker is easy to set up and use. The label quality is excellent and fun to use. | 5 | Today | Printing Labels The Easier Way Brother HL-550 is fast, the auto cutter works great I just wish the software was easier to use but still is functional. Love it so far! | 5 | Today | Easy to configure hardware; software is quirky I've had both a Dymo printer (it simply stopped functioning one day; no degradation or indication of a pending failure). This Brother unit is its replacement.
Pros: I like the fact that the printer "knows" what label stock is installed. The speed is quite adequate although it will slow if the processor is very busy. The printing is clean and crisp and as others have pointed out, being thermal there is no ink or toner to deal with. The hardware has a clean look to it (for what that's worth) -- the Dymo looked like a old VW "bug".
Cons: The applications are poorly integrated with one another -- editing the format for a label (for example, I needed to add a country field to an address label, and include a PostNet code for use in the US) is easy once you figure it out, but in no way intuitive.
Summary: it gets the job done. The media is proprietary -- shop around (Ebay for example) for deals. The software is effective but sometimes complicated to configure (the help is pretty good). | 4 | Today | Not What I Had Hoped For This printer seems fundamentally like a vehicle for Brother to sell its labels. It is certainly a reasonable system to use, the labels don't jam in the printer too often, the printing is clean, and it beats having to run a sheet of Avery labels through a copy machine in most cases. But they have certainly not produced anything close to what I want in a labeling system. Here are some of my peeves:
* The address labels come in two sizes, too big for a return address label and too small for a large address label. They could keep the large one as is and just produce a much smaller one.
* The software comes with the unit, so you might not expect much, and you would be right. The autoformats are adequate, but they are hard to adjust if you don't like what came with the unit.
* There is no color coding in the labels, as there is in Avery labels
* The manual label cutter is awkward, and sometimes (not often) damages the labels
* Three label cartridges cost me as much as the whole system. They should be much cheaper
Apart from that, it works, is easy to learn, and does save time and make neat and clean labels. I just wouldn't swear by it for my small office if something better came along. | 3 | Today | A very good PC Label Printer I bought the QL-550 on sale, so it was not very expensive. The software is easy to use and you can print labels very fast. I would like to see a Mac OS X software version | 4 | Today | Software doesn't work. When I loaded the software my computer wasn't able to find all the components. I keep getting error codes. Tried reinstalling 3 times. Even went to the website to get the latest download and still could not make it work like it is suppose to. Not a happy camper right now. | 2 | Today |
