| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Works well, but cables are finicky! I used an Iogear GCS62 2-port KVM for a year and was very pleased. I upgraded my PCs and no longer needed PS/2 on the computer side, so I went with this USB version. So far I'm happy - it seems to work well - but am less pleased with the cables and connections on this unit.
On the body of the switch itself, Iogear moved the PS/2 connections from the sides to the end, flanking the VGA connector. This presents a problem for my Microsoft USB/PS2 mouse, since its wide connector rubs against the video cable. I much preferred the old side-mounded ports, which weren't such a tight fit.
Then there are the computer cables. Each VGA cable has a captive USB and audio cable attached to it with a sort of sliding cuff. But they point out of the PC instead of into it - in other words, a single cable comes from the KVM to the VGA connector, and then two smaller cables spring out of the VGA connector and head back up the VGA cable, where they are held on with cuffs. This makes connecting these cables (USB and audio) awkward since they are heading in the wrong direction. The cables are also shorter than they ought to be, making it a tight fit to reach my audio out jack from my VGA port.
I haven't noticed any audio crosstalk or static problems, though. And the keyboard and mouse support is rock solid. | 4 | Today | Sound electronic noise The function of the KVM is flawless, but the sound switching has a problem in that there is electronic feedback or crosstalk and you get a irritating headache causing, high pitch twang and you end up unplugging the sound cable to the KVM. | 3 | Today | KVM pretty good, slight problem This is a pretty good product: was easy to install, functions well, is valuable to display small Fujitsu P1510 on desktop. Only bad feature is that when the desktop comes out of "sleep mode" - the spacebar will automatically go on forever until you hit the hot key once to stop it. Nothing severe, it is an annoyance, but worth it for me. | 4 | Today | Sunshine This didn't work so well for me - computer locked up and ran really slow. | 1 | Today | Great For Multitasking/Developers/Sys Admins This switch is truly great for those of us who use multiple machines to get our work done. I myself use this switch with my PowerBook G4 running OS X, and a Dell OptiPlex desktop running Windows XP and Debian Linux, with the PowerBook spanning screens when I have it switched active with this KVM. I can easily and quickly switch between OS X and Windows or Linux to compile and test software on the various platforms, as well as perform system administration functions on my various machines without the obvious hassle of plugging and unplugging that this switch is obviously designed to take care of.
All in all, it's a very simple device, but very effective. Those of us who could use something like this only need a review to confirm whether or not it works as intended, and aside from audio, which I could care less about, it works wonderfully. The only caveat I could find with it is that using the Scroll Lock key with the Macintosh active causes the internal LCD to dim (by design, apparently, as it takes the function of the hardware F1 key), but that's not much of an issue for me. If it isn't for you, I highly recommend this product . . . | 5 | Today | Not bad for the price I have used various other KVM's in the past ranging from home use to commercial applications, and this KVM for the price is quite good. Switches between computers quickly and easily, audio sounds good (good enough for me), and it was a snap to hook up. I love the built in cables and size of this unit. Its size makes it easy to hide on the already cluttered desk. I just slapped a piece of Velcro to it and hung it on the back side of the desk. My complaints are that the PS2 connecters seem to come loose from the unit quite easily, and that they are so close to the monitor connector that if you have a USB to PS2 converter you need to get a small pig tail extender. One PC's video was a little off, but it has always done that no matter what KVM I have used (two different Belkin models in the past). I use this between two desktop PC's. One is dual booted with WinXP and Fedora, and the other PC is dual booted between Ubuntu and Fedora. I have had no problems with any of the OS's picking up the mouse or keyboard. Well worth the price I paid! | 4 | Today | Works Great I also have the Linksys version. I like the IOgear slightly better. I highly recommend it to anyone who has the need to plug in multiple computers to the same KVM config. | 5 | Today | Awesome product/space saver I wish I searched, found, & purchased one earlier. I'm a road warrior with laptop. I work from home at times & have a desktop. This device is awesome to plug in & go. I love it. Better than a clunky port replicator for my laptop & saves precious desk space. I'd highly recommend. | 5 | Today | Iogear GCS712U 2-Port USB KVM Switch So far it has been good. I don't use it on a daily basis as it's used on 2 servers that rarely needs maintenance. All in all, it meets my use. | 4 | Today | Great KVM, so far ....... Works well, as they0 said........both ps2 mouse and keyboard work off the same USB plug! | 5 | Today |
