| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Multiple buyer of the HP 1040 fax machine I work for a company that has 10 retail stores, and all are equipped with fax machines. I'm slowly replacing various brand fax machines with the HP 1040. So far, all of the HP 1040 fax machines are working flawlessly.
I'm amazed at all the negative reviews for the HP 1040 fax machine on Amazon. Most people will not leave a positive review for a product that is working fine for reasons such as....
"I don't have the time"
"I have better things to do"
"It's such a pain to write reviews for products"
Writing negative reviews becomes a "priority" once the product fails.
| 5 | Today | BEWARE!!! I purchased this fax machine for a small business. I need to send and or recieve a fax about 12 times per year. I am not sure about the quality of this item because I can never use it!! I have 2 phone lines and the machine cannot determine when to pick up with the fax machine. If it is plugged in it picks up the phone and my callers get the annoying fax squeal. I was on the phone for 5 hours off and on with tech support and finally they told me I needed a $50 router device because of my dual phone lines. I purchased the router and can now send a fax but have to plug and unplug the unit before and after each fax. I still cannot recieve an incoming fax, even after the additional investment of $50. I should have just paid the extra money and gotten a really good fax to begin with. I am now almost $150 in the hole and the machine is doing only 1/2 the job.
PITIFUL | 1 | Today | WHAT A DUD! We bought the HP 1040 Fax two days ago to replace an older fax machine; and specifically to dispatch an urgent fax message.
Following the "Start Here" pamphlet and the "HP 1040/1050 Fax Series User Guide" scrupulously, we installed the new machine and fired off our urgent fax message... That's what we thought!
The message did not go through. To further test the machine, we checked it against several known fax numbers. Our messages did not go through.
Rechecking the setup instructions, individually and together, we tried resending... Failure again... and again, more failure.
We called in two other personnel to independently check our set up and fax dispatch. Failure.
What a dud!
The machine is now comfortably repacked for return... Well, back to the seller it goes!

| 1 | Today | One star because no option for no star POS.
2 hrs on line with tech support first day with screen contrast issue.
Day 2 machine started feeding blank paper to far and jamming documents.
Machine noisy.
Day 3, it's in the trash.
Day 4 received HP 1250, runs like a top, is quiet, and I'm back in business. | 1 | Today | mine is the Hp1010 Model i'm supposing that this featured model, the HP 1040 is the upgraded model from my HP 1010 which is identical in appearance, from the picture anyway. I have not been pleased with this fax basically from the beginning, I think I spent about $80 for mine at Staples and thought it would be a good deal, as I have never had any problems with other HP products, we had been using a HP Fax 950 machine at our office for years, was bigger and heavier but was really good fax and lasted a GOOD Ten years before finally just wearing down.
Things I don't like about this HP-1010 (and possibly this same HP 1040)
* There is Not and on/off button, i've got a splitter in the back of my broadband modem for the fax and a phone line and always have to remember to unhook the fax from the splitter. If there was an on/off switch it would make it so much easier.
* Single sheet papers get jammed very easiy, or sometimes they send on my end but don't receive on the other, which gets frustrating because then you have to make a phone call to the person waiting on the fax to see how many pages they actually received.
* A lot of the time when it connects or tries to connect, some sort of different ring comes across, and it doesnt send my transmission, i have to cancel and then try again.
basically those two essential fax qualites are my irks with this machine. I'm trying to see about getting another one, but don't want the same hassles with another fax. I'm using this as a light fax at my home office, and send maybe 5 faxes a day, and don't really receive any at all. I was hoping this would be a good, sturdy, reliable machine, but it doesnt seem to be. I just wonder if this featured model has upgraded and fixed any of these jamming or other problems, myself and from what i've read some of the other users.
I'd look elsewhere before you buy this one, sadly, HP didn't hit the mark on making a good study reliable unit. You do get what you pay for I guess, so I suppose if we want a good machine, we'll just have to spend a little more in the beginning to get a good quality unit in the end.
| 2 | Today | Brand new, its back in its box to be returned. This machine caused over 2 hours of grief. Brand new machine (actually bought it at Office Max), set it up and was unable to get the blank paper to feed. I tried every which way, new paper, fanned it, turned it around, upside down.. nothing worked. Was able to print two sheets for whatever reason, but not at the same time and just wasn't able to repeat it. I called HP for help. Brand new machine and HP's automated message told me that the 1040 was "out of warranty". What a wasted day. | 1 | Today | Very Disappointing for an HP product Bought the machine just over a year ago for light home use. After sending about 10 faxes the machine started acting up. I delayed doing anything about it, as I thought my DSL line was possibly causing the problem. Eventually when I did get to the machine after I couldn't sent an urgent fax, I found that it had developed all kinds of problems. The menue items did not work as supposed to and nedless to say it could not send. I am particularly irked about it, because I have just spent $33 to purchase a new ink cartrage, and it is now off warranty. It is my last HP consumer product! | 1 | Today | You'll be sorry....... ...if you buy this fax machine. Totally stupid design. Won't allow you to have an answering machine anywhere in your home or business unless it's directly connected to the fax machine. The print-out is painfully slow. What a joke....shame on you, H. P. | 1 | Today | SO FAR, WORKS AS IT SHOULD We bought this as a replacement for an old Panasonic "film" fax that had developed an intermittent short circuit. It is used for "light duty", more for sending than receiving.
Having read other comments for both this and the HP 1050 fax, we have it hooked into a single land line shared with an extension, no VOIP or digital phone, and without a surge protector.
The major decision in buying an inexpensive fax is whether to go "film" or ink cartridge.
Film can be wasteful and expensive. It indexes one page for each page received so that both a 3-line cover sheet and a page of solid text require a full sheet of film. On the other hand, film doesn't dry out in the device; while it takes up shelf space, it can be stored almost indefinitely; and there seem to be several quality "generic" film suppliers at half the cost of what Panasonic charges.
Ink cartridge drain in proportion to usage. While small, storage life is more limited and, in other devices, I've personally not had good experience with non HP "generic" or refilled cartridges.
The HP 1040 costs about $25. or so more than the bottom of the line Panasonic film unit. Note that it comes with a "starter" cartridge. Full cartridges sell for $30. at a local retailer.
So far, the fax is working as advertised. It took time to set up. There are lots of options and settings - the manual is some 87 pages. As with other electronic devices, I recommend downloading the manual from the HP web site and reading it before buying the product.
At least compared to my old Panasonic fax, the print is clearer and the operation is faster. It has good report functions and intuitive menus. But you do have to read the manual!
If any quality issues develop, I will post them here.
ADD: June, 2007. One major problem with this machine is faxing bank statements (slightly thicker than normal paper and previously folded for mailing -- although that may not be an issue.)
The statements do not feed smoothly and tend to hang up the machine. Accordingly, it is necessary to insert them sequentially and one page at a time during the faxing operation rather than stacking them in the feed slot.
Had we know this earlier, we would have given fewer than five stars but Amazon will not allow a rating change after posting.
| 5 | Today | Died too soon ... I have owned this machine 14 months. It now seems to have died. It no longer prints ... neither test page, nor copies, nor confirmation of fax transmission as it once did. HP offered me a $30.00 tech support option or free email support. I am waiting for free support. I did all the troubleshooting the manual suggested ... cleaned the cartridge, aligned it again, cleaned the innards as per instruction. It just stopped working properly. It was a fine fax machine, and I liked the ink cartridge rather than the film waste, but it didn't last very long for my $100.00. I won't buy an HP again because of this. | 2 | Today |
