I am pleased with the product. It is fast and I have had no problems with it...Just wish I would have gotten a bigger one. The included software is simple and easy to use. On the other hand...by looking at these reviews it seems like these drives have problems with durability and customers may want to look elsewhere.

Great Product
I ordered this product for use both on a MAC and PC. I works well on both OS's. I was worried about the other reviews on this product that stated that is was made of cheap plastic. It is, but so is every other flash dive I have ever had and none of them have died on me. If your tough on equipment you will have problems with any flash drive. The Lexar SecureII software that comes with it works very well on Both MAC and PC. It is the only encrypted virtual drive other than PGP Desktop that works on both MAC and PC. It is probably not as secure as PGP, but secure enough in case the drive is lost.

I wish I could change my star rating from 5 to 3
Since I wrote my original review, my 2nd Jumpdrive Lightning (a 2GB model) has developed a case of the slows, not always, but always when it writes off of my newest, most powerful PC. The Lexar tech support guy's only suggestion was that I not use the Media Center edition of Win XP. It's a weird problem. The new Jumprdrive originally was equally fast (very fast) on all my PCs. But I'm not about to change my computer's OS. Anyway, I can no longer give Lexar Jumpdrives a very high recommendation. My original review follows: The name Lightning is fully justified by the exceptional performance of this memory stick. It seems fully 5 times faster than a 2-Gbyte "EP" memory stick that I bought just a few months ago (and now never use!), and at least twice as fast as even my old Lexar Jumpdrive Pro. Maybe if you want some special "software" this is not the device for you, but for the basic function of ultra-portable storage, this is way, way superior to anything else I've ever had -- or borrowed. By the way, I only noticed those negative reviews because I stopped by to order the new 2-Gbyte version of the Lightning. (I really need both 2 Gbytes and speed.) If I am reading the technical specs right, the 2-Gbyte version is even a bit faster than the 1-Gbyte Lightning.

Lexar dropped the ball
This is my third lexar jumpdrive, I have the original purple USB 1.1, a 512mb secure, and now the 1GB lightning. I expected great quality as before, with a metal case, you expect durability, but this unit falls short. The size is great and I got it at a great price, however now 4 months after purchase the cap will not stay on, it pops off all the time, I have had to crawl half way under my car twice to get it. I have always been impressed with Lexar, but this item falls far short compared to other units they have made. I would suggest saving your money.

VERY POOR QUALITY
We purchased 21 of these. 20 out of the lot are defective. The Lightning "Jump Drives" have a rubber/plastic molding that holds the front and back of the jump drive together. The cap is built the same way. Upon removing the drives from the package, and removing the caps, most of them cracked and parts of the plastic fell off. We contacted Lexar (brush up on your Indian language skills before calling) and did not get anywhere with them..... I would NOT recommend buying from Lexar. We returned the products to PC Mall, and exchanged them for SanDisk Cruzer Titaniums. MUCH BETTER!

Lexar's on its way, but not there yet.
Good drive, a few things I would have liked to know before purchasing. 1) My cap doesn't stay on the opposite side when I am using the drive, I have to set it on the desk. 2) The file synch feature is lacking in that you cannot specify single files to synchronize, you must select full directories and apply file extention filters to exclude/include files if you want to be more specific. I don't like this lack of control. Build quality is fair, not pro grade, but not totally cheesy. The main plus of this drive is that the synch and other software runs from the drive so its not a messy install. Nice utility interface (maclike). Very quick transfers too. However, it would have been nice to have files synch to the drive to a root directory instead of having the messy subfolders of where they each came from. Recommended given other options on the market.

Very bad purchase
I was expecting a little more smooth control to this flash drive but it is so frustrating. Some of the features did not even work with my jumpdrive such as hiding the "secure" drive. I can never safely remove my drive from my computer because it always says it cannot. The instructions say that the "secure" drive needs to be hidden in order for to safely remove it but it doesn't work. It always takes so long just to get the thing safely out of my computer. I could just pull it out but I'm afraid it could lead to data loss. The encryption seems to be the only real feature that works properly but everything else seems too clunky. I regret ever buying this device. Go with sandisk.

Lexar JDP1GB-231 JumpDrive Lightning 1 GB, 100X
(...)I am very pleased with the product, price and service. I received it 5 days later and put it right to work and boy is it fast.

Speedy transfer rate but poor design
I had this drive for 5 months till its demise on 13 Dec 2005. Within 2 days of receiving the drive the plastic (yes, plastic!) molding to hold the cap in place wore off, so the cap stays on very loosely , if at all. I stopped wearing the drive around my neck for that reason. For that matter, I stopped using the cap! The desgin is essentially a stainless steel casing but with plastic support at the side and around the port itself, the molding around the port begain to breakoff, forcing me to use glue to keep it on.. My drive finally met its demise by being literally pulled out of its casing by my bumping against it and hooking the lanyard i had for it, while being plugged into a computer on the floor . The thing actually works still, but it's like a snail without its shell and the usb port is bent where it can break off from the now exposed mini circuit board. The casing is partially split - along the sides - where the plastic is. A little extra force and I can split the casing in two. The stainless steel is a waste of time. Only there for looks and nothing else. I bought it thinking it would be a tough flash drive. I was quite wrong. I'm sorry, this is my 3rd - and final - lexar drive that I shall own. I'll Give Sandisk a try ... or anyone with a proper drive design.
