| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Good Product But With Software Shortcomings Generally speaking I am a big fan of DYMO label makers and have used them for years. But the 400 is my first foray into postage, which is why I bought it.
Generally performance is good but the product has limitations based on its software. Specifically the limitation is that postage amounts are based on a drop-down menu, rather than allowing the user to simply type in the postage amount due. Drop-downs do not allow for the vast variety of postage options out there, such as surcharge for square envelopes on international letters.
Example: you want to send a square envelope to Germany. The drop-down only has options for sending rectangular envelopes to Mexico, Canada, and the rest of the world. So you're stuck. Either you send it without the surcharge postage amount (and it comes back to you) or you have to print out a guzillion 1-cent stamps, which you would never do because of the cost of the labels. If the dang think would simply allow you to type in the amount of postage you need, this wouldn't be an issue. The only way for me to get around the international surcharge issue is to use the $1.17 stamp for 3-ounce packages, but this means the post office unnecessarily eats a free three cents every time I send a square envelope to Europe. Really dumb.
I would say this product is ideal for anybody dealing with largely domestic postage but becomes awkward when dealing with a largely international audience. DYMO can make this a perfect product by allowing users to type in their amount postage amounts. | 4 | Today | Decent hardware and software Unit works relatively well, I had to run the installer a number of times to get it to work correctly on Windows Vista. The software seems fine and indicates it is supported on the Dymo site, but the installer is antiquated and needs help. Once I finally got it installed it works fine. | 4 | Today | Amazing device - just works We purchased the 400 Turbo with the intent to use it to replace our outdated mailing label system that required us to keep multiple copies of labels on hand. The reasons we purchased the 400 Turbo were 1) QuickBooks integration and 2) speed of printing.
I took the printer out of the box at 8:30am and had it integrated with QuickBooks and printing our logo and return address on every label in under 45 minutes. The printer itself was working faster than that.
Highly recommended. | 5 | Today | Great Label Printer - Software is So So. We bought this for our office to quickly print labels for signs we create. The printer was faster than we expected! It blazes through label after after label. The breadth of different types and sizes of labels is also great, as it allows for growth and diversity.
The included software is the only downside to this printer. Ugh, no ability to create a box or text and CTRL-click-drag to copy those elements. There's also no way to set guidelines or snap-to areas to properly line elements up. You actually have to "eyeball" your design to line things up, which is amateurish at best.
You can use more powerful software (like Photoshop) to design and print your labels but it's slower and I've found the print quality is actually lower when you try to use software other than the one included with the printer.
All in all, it's too good and fast of a printer to let the poor quality of the included software bring me down. I still recommend this printer for fast reliable and versatile label printing. | 4 | Today | Labels Yes . . Postage No Pleased with the ease of formatting and printing labels. Very fast and the quality is very good. Easy installation and set up.
However, I was not happy to see that stamps run about $.08 per blank, meaning your $.41 stamp is actually costing you $.49. Also, as other buyers noted, you cannot pick the exact amount of postage you might require, unless it is one of the presets in the program. The solution would be to print two stamps coming close to, but exceeding, the exact postage required on larger, heavier envelopes. Of course, this means you are now using two blanks for $.16, and paying more postage than you should have to. These are probably not big draw backs for the casual postage user, but if you do any mass mailings or mail a number of larger items, the costs can add up.
There should definitely be more than one provider for the blank stamps to have some competition and bring the cost down. And, you should certainly be able to choose the exact amount of postage you require.
| 3 | Today | An Amazing Printer This is a great printer. You can pretty much create a label to look like anything you want by selecting desired fonts and inserting graphics. It's easy to install and set up. When I had a question on how to print a large number of addresses, which had to be pulled off a spreadsheet, I called Dymo and they were very friendly and helpful to tell me how to do it. I highly recommend this and it's a great price. | 5 | Today | Great product This has saved me so much time over going to the post office. I can mail everything right from home now. It's great! Easy to use & not that difficult to set up. | 5 | Today | This is a great addition to a small office Ive had the Dymo LabelWriter400 Turbo for over a year now. It works great. Im glad we found it. It's a lot easier than the old method of printing an envelope in the printer- which didnt work well at all- or printing the name on a label sheet. This printer creates and spits out a self-adhesive label very quickly and easily with no fuss, adds the correct zip code/street name and postal bar code, and makes letters look very professional. The software it comes with is simple and straightforward. It has a thermal printer and requires no ink refills. You can creat simple address labels, postage for packages, return address, and large shipping labels with custom logos, graphics, etc. There are dozens of label choices. The labels are cheap- especially since many vendors sell identical label replacement rolls for 40% less than the Dymo brand labels. If you mail 5-15 letters a day as we do, this is great way to go. | 5 | Today | An Indispensable Tool for Any Frequent Mailer As an avid ham radio operator, I sometimes send out dozens of QSL cards in the mail on a given day. Being able to quickly and easily address them makes my hobby much more enjoyable. I bought this LabelWriter after previously having owned its predecessor. That label printer gave me a long, reliable product life, so I didn't hesitate to buy another similar Dymo product. I haven't been disappointed. This printer prints quickly, quietly, and reliably, and is bundled with excellent label printing software. Labels are readily available. What more could I ask? | 5 | Today | Good printer and good service. The first unit that we received failed after 3 days. Fortunately, a quick call to Dymo's support line had a replacement printer to us in just a few days. So far it's working as advertised.
I wish the printer had an on/off switch. This unit is always on. If you have to reset the printer, which we did several times when the first one failed, you must pull the power plug. The power plug is very inconvenient to access. | 4 | Today |
