My Elgato eyety plus doesn't work!!!
I bought an Elgato eye tv followed instillation instructions and it does'nt work! They don't have usefull tech support as it is Email only and often takes days ro get a reply. I am extremely dissatisfied. I have spent over a week Emailing with no improvement in my situation. I suspect a defective box but keep being told to try other things to no avail.

Does not work with Intel-based MACs
Device won't work with my new mac mini (intel-based mac). Have been told by tech-support that they are working on a driver for this, and they have no due date. Con - One design flaw I recognized in the hardware, there is no light to tell you that is powered on and running (this could be due to no software to drive it), and there is no way to tell that the hardware is powered up at all. Pro - On a good note, the thing makes a decent paper weight as I wait for the software! :)

caveat emptor indeed!
well, just purchased the mytv .pvr from eskape labs. in a word USELESS! do not buy this product! never had a BRAND NEW product for a mac that demands you follow all of these insane directions to update the hardware, none of which made any difference at all. i run a g4 ibook with mega-ram installed, 1.25ghz ....and this thing never worked once. or showed any sign of working. just crashed or showed a white screen....after piddling with this for over an hour.....I GIVE UP! going right back to the store it was purchased from. very frustrated. also, no tech support, no troubleshooting information, no toll free help number, and stupid grade school typos all over the useless website and readme files. i have never written a review for a product....just felt i had to warn unsuspectors about this cheesy product.

Lots of problems. Don't buy this product!
This product has a lot of problems. It's usable, but I definitely have buyer's remorse. The basic television function is okay. Video quality is fine when you keep the window at 640x480; if you attempt to expand it to full screen, the quality degrades quite a bit. It is nowhere as good as a regular TV -- even a really cheap one. Channels do not change quickly; it takes about a full second to switch between them. Its big feature is the time-shifting function. Unfortunately, it too has problems, even on my Powermac G5. When viewing time-shifted TV, the video and audio stutter every 5-20 seconds or so, making it very frustrating to watch. Also, when I use the fast forward button to skip commercials, the video first moves quickly like it's supposed to, but then it freezes (while still fast forwarding), so that I can't tell where the video will resume playing. The software is a mess. It's buggy and crashes often. The recording function requires you to manually enter in channels and times to record a program. It is nowhere near as user-friendly as TiVo or even the DVR service you can get with some cable systems. The remote control is useless. The buttons are oversensitive and register three times, so that if you press the channel up button once it will move up three channels, or if you try to enter "42" it will enter 444222 and not work properly. The remote has a "Power" button but it literally doesn't do anything. I bought this product because it was the least expensive PVR device compatible with a Mac. I should have gone with EyeTV by El Gato -- even though it costs more, it's said to have a great interface, good quality, and everyone loves it. Ultimately, this PVR falls far short of what I expect from a product designed to work with the Mac. I really wish I had a time machine so I could go back in time and warn myself against buying the myTV.PVR.

Shaky, very shaky
I plan to return this product to Amazon.com and get a Miglia or an Elgato. Yes, the product works with my PowerBook. However, it's not really usable on a laptop. For starters, despite the claimed hardware MPEG compressor, the CPU usage of MyTV/X (the TV application) is 50% at all times, which is like when creating a DVD from iDVD. Next, the remote is very sensitive, one press resulting in two or even three keypresses sent to the application. It is very frustrating to punch in 29 five, six times and go to 229, 299, 222 and all other variations. When changing channels, there is very audible white noise coming out of the speakers. Also, changing the channels is very slow. MyTV/X crashes when the computer enters standby and resumes. This happens every night, since I have programmed my laptop to sleep by itself at a certain hour. I think this is completely unacceptable. Maybe under Windows people can get away with it, but not on a Mac. Equivalent Open Source software is far better than this. Editing the recorded material is very hard, since iDVD and iMovieHD cannot recognize the MPEG2. Using Toast 6 one can create a Video DVD / CD or export it to DV-format which can be then edited by iMovieHD. Therefore commercials are left in, not like the EyeTV software where one can easily remove them without re-encoding the MPEG stream. I'll stop here with the problems. There are at least other five software bugs I found with the MyTV/X application itself, but I don't plan to turn my review into a bugzilla list. On the plus side, the unit has decent picture quality and sound. It also records up to 30 minutes in LiveTV mode (for timeshifting: pause, rev, ffwd) in addition of being able to record whatever program up to the maximum hard drive space available. Recording quality is good. Update: I have since returned this product and purchased an Elgato EyeTV200 instead. During the time I had the unit, I wrote two e-mails to EskapeLabs and tried to call them several times, but they never answered back. I have no regrets about my decision to go with a different manufacturer. Bottom line, I cannot recommend purchasing this product. I'll even go as far as recommending Amazon.com to stop carrying it unless the bugs are sorted out. It could have been a good alternative to more expensive products from Miglia or Elgato, but as such it only gets two stars (and I'm generous).

Good Product
This is a good product that linked easily with my powerbook g4. The only issue I have had is that the power book runs very hot when watching tv on it. I have found that elevating it/ pointing a fan under it to keep air moving has helped. Before I did this the fan's started after 1/2 hour or so and would not shut off!

It may work, it may not...
I purchased this product after briefly reviewing a few of the external Mac PVR solutions (there aren't many) -- it was reasonably priced (compared to other alternatives) and had all the features I wanted (TV, as well as FM radio). I should have done more homework. The first unit I received did not work. I installed the software, did a channel scan, and was left with a blank white window. Repeated attempts to reinstall, unplug, reboot, etc. didn't help. So I contacted Hauppauge technical support via phone -- they never returned my call. After some searching online, I found a post mentioning that this was hardware issue with the myTV.PVR device. So I took the unit back and exchanged it (instead of shipping it to the company on my dime, which I wasn't willing to do right away) ... same problem as before. After two exchanges, I managed to get a unit that worked. In the meantime, also tried emailing Hauppauge technical support. I received a response three days later indicating that the white window problem is indeed a hardware issue. Hauppauge knows about this, but hasn't posted anything online about it! Now that I have a working unit, I'm somewhat satisfied, although the included software contains numerous bugs, e.g. I'm able to tune the radio to 10.3 MHz, for example, which, of course, is outside of the FM band (I don't get any audio when I do this). Accidentally unplugging the USB cord to the unit causes the myTV/X application to crash. There's no help available in the program either, as another reviewer mentioned. Overall, if I hadn't invested the cash and time already, I would not have purchased the myTV.PVR. I've heard a number of good things about the EyeTV 200 - although it's more expensive, the extra cost may be worth it to avoid the headaches.

Worked but ...
Mistake number one was not doing any research on PVR's before I bought this thing. I bought this PVR about a year ago and have tried it on two different Mac computers: a Mac Mini (1.4 GHz, PowerPC) and iMac G5. The installation was no problem, everything went well. I was able to watch TV in a matter of 2 minutes. The real reason for buying this PVR was so I could record some old family videos (VHS) to my computer, so I could later burn them on a DVD. Here are the details of my adventures in myTV land ... You can only view your recordings from within the myTV software, if you try to open the video files in ANYTHING else (Quicktime, iMovie, etc) it says that the file is corrupt. Bummer. So, I found a way around this, but it's such a pain in the neck! You have to place the file into Toast Titanium as if you're going to burn it, right-click and save the file to your computer. Toast converts your movie into a DV movie and then it's all ready for editing and viewing ... except the time it takes to convert can be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour and a half or more, depending on how long your movie clip is. Huge pain especially if you have countless hours of video! (I would guesstimate that it takes about an hour and half to do about 30 minutes worth of video). It also produces a tremendously huge file size ... usually a couple of gigs. Also, when scheduling a recording, you MUST have the myTV software running in order for it to record. If you don't have the TV software running, then it WILL NOT record. Ugh! So, pretty much you have to have the TV going all day long if you can actually remember that you scheduled a recording for that day ... and if you have an iMac, your monitor won't sleep because the TV is on and then a few months down the road your monitor will probably die. This is just plain dumb. Seriously, what's the point of scheduling a recording when you have to remember to turn on the TV in order for it to record? I put all those things aside until I figured out that myTV was causing my software to crash! So far, I've noticed that Photo Booth and iMovie HD will not run if you have myTV software installed. Also, if you have iSight, your camera will not work ... AT ALL! You have to remove all the myTV software from your computer, from Startup, plist and any where else it may have engraved itself into in order to get your software and camera working again. If you simply need to watch TV on your Mac, sure, myTV is okay ... but it's really worth the extra money to buy an EyeTV.

Great Product
This is a great way to watch tv on your computer. I have an ibook g4 1.25ghz. and have had no problems. As far as dvd burning, I wouldn't know. But it functions as you would expect as a tv tuner.

So far so good
Works well for me. The software version I got was 3.6.2 so maybe the software bugs have been worked out. So far I have just used it for TV watching and recording for playback on my iMac, I haven't tried burning to a DVD. I'm pretty pleased concidering I'm running this with a G4 800 iMac using USB 1.1 The version I got has a external power supply and comes with a remote control.
