NBA Live 2006 vs. NBA 2K6
So you're looking for an NBA game but don't know which one to get? I shall sort through the good and bad offered in both NBA Live 2006 and NBA 2K6. Between the two I have played (Live '06 and 2K6), I can honestly say NBA 2K6 was a better buy for me. At $20 I've had countless hours of some of the most joyous moments and some of the most frustrating. However, NBA 2K6 is more of an all-around basketball game. If you're good at offense and poor on defense chances are good that you won't win as many games as you might think. But if you're only good at defense and horrible at offense, you won't win much then either. You basically have to play an even game altogether (this is based on All-Star level). For fans of offensive-minded games, look no further than NBA Live 2006. The basic controls are straight-forward and easy to get a hang of so there won't be any real problems for newcomers to the series (such as myself). The best aspect featured in Live '06 is undoubtedly the Freestyle Superstars. My favorite team is the 76ers and to see Allen Iverson pulling off the moves he does in real life on a game is nothing short of a rush. Another highlight is that when you're left wide open for a shot, chances are extremely good that you'll drain it. Whereas on 2K6, you still basically had to have a perfect release. As for the overall look of each game, I'd say that NBA 2K6 steals that as well. When you're looking at Allen Iverson (or any other player for that matter) there's no question who you're looking at. He's got his tattoos, his cornrows, mustache, everything. NBA Live 2006, on the other hand, almost tends to look childish at times. Don't get me wrong, the graphics and dunks are awesome to look at, but as you're dribbling upcourt I can't help but think the player's arms are too long. Of course, that could just be me. 2K6 also seems to have more realistic courts (I could do without the shots of the fans though). NBA 2K6 pros: -Fantastic gameplay -The more you play the more you learn, making it a game you can invest time in -The graphics are great -When you turn up the difficulty it ACTUALLY GETS HARDER NBA 2K6 cons: -Offseason on Legacy mode is kind of lame -Too frustrating at times -When the other team is on a run, it's nearly impossible to hit anything other than a lay-up -Loading time is almost ridiculous NBA Live 2006 pros: -Easy for anyone to pick up and play -Freestyle Superstars -Commentary is a lot better than 2K6 -Dunks are fairly easy to execute and make for some excellent highlights NBA Live 2006 cons: -Camera angle is horrible -Far too offensive-minded -Almost too easy at times -Fouls are called too liberally on you So there you have it, a fairly unbiased view on each game. If Live '06 were to drop down to $20 I'd highly recommend it, because in reality, it really is fun to play. But at $30 I'm not sure if it's worth every penny. Plus, 2K6 has a great street ball mode in addition to the legacy mode, so did Live 06 ever really have a chance?

Very fun and addicting, but...
If you already have NBA Live 2005, then there's no need to buy this game. It's pretty much the same as 05. The gameplay, the graphics, the players, the features (well some). Now the one feature that impressed me was the freestyle players. You got Power (Shaq), Shooter (Dirk), Scorer (T Mac), Stopper (Ben Wallace) and of course Highflyer (Vince Carter). There are a number of players who have these specialties and they can be very useful during a game. If you have these five specialties, then you're unstoppable. But that would be cheating. As for those people who are new to these games, I'll just get to the point. The controls are simple and easy to get used to, the graphics are awesome and it's actually realistic (most of the time). Overall, if you're a NBA or basketball fan or just like sports, then I suggest that you buy this game. It's too good to miss.

No better than last year
NBA 06 is kind of fun, but not really good. I mean, it has the exact same features as NBA 2005. The slam dunk contest, dynasty mode, season mode and everything else. The only new feature that they added this year was that freestyle superstar thing, where each player has a certain type of personality. For example, A. Iverson is a shooter, Lebron James is a highflyer, etc. But who cares about that? It doesn't really make the game anymore exciting than last year's version. It also doesn't affect how the players perform on the court. They'll still shoot the same and defend the same as always. When EA created Madden 06, they actually took time to add more than one new feature that people would actually care about. They added the new QB vision cone, superstar mode, rad new features to franchise mode and more. Then, people bought it because it was new AND exciting. NBA Live 06 isn't like that. They only added one new boring feature and the rest are the same as last year. To whoever is reading this, if you haven't bought it yet, don't waste your money on it when you can buy NBA 2005 for $12 and still get the same thing. If you have bought it, return it to the store and keep NBA 2005. Anyway, I think they could have done alot better when they made this game

EA Sports Holding Back?
Thanks to brand loyalty and the Madden series, EA Sports games are all I play. And usually, I'm pretty satisfied with the new game that comes out every year. Until now. Did the NBA Live series get put on the backburner in development labs? The game hasn't changed enough to warrant the upgrade this year, for multiple reasons. - There isn't anything I dispise more than outdated rosters. If a few transactions happen late, I understand. But these rosters are so outdated that the game feels unrealistic at first sight. - The graphics have improved significantly, don't get me wrong. But there are some faults that I can't get myself to overlook. The combination of wrinkles in the jerseys and oversized heads make for a laughable presentation until you get used to it. - The special modes aren't anything special, still. The slam dunk conteset and 3pt shootout are always fun, but beyond that I'm not impressed. Make what you want of the dynasty mode, but be honest; it could be drastically improved. I would love to see NBA Live implement the Superstar mode as in Madden! - Gameplay in general I think is still pretty fun. -- Dunking: Much more realistic and entertaining. -- Rebounding: I'm not having much trouble. Pretty standard. -- Passing: Needs easier passing icons still, and greater control. (Hasn't changed) -- Shooting: Freestyle controls try and make it realistic, but I agree become confusing (shooter versus dunker, for example) if you don't immediately know what player you are using. -- Blocking: Big improvement. You can't block 20 shots a game anymore. -- Stealing: Still a little too easy to get 10 steals a game. Overall the game is lacking, but I wonder if EA was saving some tricks for XBOX 360. It seems like they have so much more potential, and it was held back a bit in this release. To be honest you don't need to go out and buy this one, but it's still fun in the end if you are a die hard NBA Live as myself.

EA will never get it right
Will they? Pros: Nice graphics nice superstar abilities Don't have to purchase all jerseys since it's not alot Marv and Steve Kerr doing comentary online mode is pretty cool Cons: -Horrible rebounds:(I mean it's a miracle whenever I get a rebound offensivly or defensivly. On superstar, this makes winning impossible, on all star I get only 15 rebounds and the computers get 45, and when I win, I win by small margines. Even if I got Tim Duncan and Nazir Mohommed jumping for the ball, magicly Earl Boykins ends up with the ball. I mean come on.) -Clutch time stupidity: EA always has this as a burden, the computer can be down by 13 with 2:00 minutes to go, then all of a sudden it's all up to a final possesion. -Realistic to unrealistic:(This game is was to silky smooth fast paced, and it keeps the same style of the previous live, unfortunatly the pace of 2005 was more suited for this style) -Match everything:(Because of rebounding, it was like the computer would score on every possession despite I shot 57% and they shot 37%. It's just an unfair advantage. If I shot that low, The other team would blow the game wide open. NBA Live 2006 is just another EA attempt at trying to make a better NBA 2K, and they once again suck major bottie crack at doing it. This is just flat out sad. Out of all NBA's since the new freestyle controls, I found the first one NBA live 2003 to be the best. That game was pure freestyle, and more power to the people. Every live after that tended to go into the computer's direction, and if that's so, then NBA live 2006 has succeded. The only fun I have is playing against friends or online, but never against the computers. So unrecamendale unless you love live to death. peace

Almost but not quite.
I'm gonna be honest. I will probbaly make some direct comparisons to NBA 2K6 in this review. But there is good reason. NBA Live 06 introduces a new system where you can control your player to reacts the same way as they would in real life. A Power player's set of moves will react differently than someone who is good at shooting. This proves to be confusing and frustrating as the buttons that corresponds to the moves is constantly changing due to the fact you're switch from player to player contantly. And this also affects the way shots are made. Unless your character is a "shooter" You don't have any real control over the way a shot is being made. A player will just toss it at the basket. i found this system stupid, as it over complicates the game, where as NBA 2K6 you can just jump in and play. It has special moves too..but they are add as a layer over basic controls...and not as the controls you are stuck with. Live does have some good points. The graphics are great. The players are rendered better than 2K6...they look just like their real life counterparts. The wrinkles in the uniforms were too pronounced though. The 3 Point and Slam Dunk contests were a lot of fun. In fact...everything about it is fun except the regular season and exhibition modes....which are the games bread and butter in my opinion. So in conclusing..I'd rent this one. If the control scheme is something you enjoy, then this game may just be something you've been waiting for. But if you want something a little more familiar, and polished feeling during gameplay...get 2K6.

The Game That Should Have Been
The NBA Live series has evolved as everyone's darling, ever since the inclination of Live 03 that introduced Freestyle play. Sure, it changed video game basketball, but it also put the franchise a step back from realism, from the old days of Live 95, 98, and the best one I still think overall, Live 2000. In Live 06, we still see too many hyperactive glitches that should have (and could have) been fixed. The game engine, although still good, seems a bit tweaked out: in Live 04 it was the "pro hop," in Live 05 it was the Freestyle Air, and now in Live 06 it is Freestyle Superstar. Although fun and interesting to play, I found it NBA Streetish. I was also disappointed in the lack of creativity EA has done. Compared to its competitor, they could have gone the extra mile and done more. Steve Kerr and Marv Albert do a good job in the booth, but why couldn't there be a female reporter on the sidelines every now and then? And what's up with the intros? Pretty lame. The current rosters loaded on the game are way out dated. It's a good thing we can update them through Xbox Live network. The Slam-dunk and All-Star Weekend is basically identical to last year's version, with a few exceptions of dunks and setting. Kenny Smith provides a good voice for this event. The games themselves, including the Rookie game, is an all out "run and gun" game without any ability to change the settings. The Franchise mode is excellent. However, I still can't understand why EA has cut off the ability to import college players from March Madness. Their competitor does it with ease on their pro and college game! A positive aspect of Live 06 is the smoothness of the graphics and game play. It does not play like a basketball game should be played, but it is still fun. The dunks are finally inspiring this time around, and sound like real dunks. A last after thought on this game is that we have something better as basketball gaming junkies: we get a whole new version with the Xbox 360 in November. I can't wait! Live 06 for the current gen is an improvement over all the other series, but it is what NBA Live 05 should have been if worked on just a little bit longer.

Good solid hoops game, but not next gen.
With the Xbox 360 so close to luanch on november 22,it almost seems not quite fair to for the great xbox games that are still being released. As far the graphics even though they are great but not next gen. I have always been a 2k sports fan myself, but this year i decided to give Live 06 a try. Live has alot of gameplay modes with good amount of depth in each of them to keep you entertained. Starting off with the simple but fun exibition mode where you can battle it out on the court angainst any NBA squad you wish. Next there is the season mode were you can pick any of the teams to take it all the way into the NBA Finals and up to the last game. You can check all of the teams and players for the whole league stats in Stats Central. Now on to the Playoffs were you can choose any team and simulate the regular season and to hopefully become the world champions. Now on to one of the more exciting modes in the game,NBA All Star Weekend. You will get to compete in the Rookie Challenge,The Three Point Shootout,The Slam dunk contest and last but not least the All Star game itself. Lets not forget about the incredibly in-depth dynasty mode were you can controll any NBA squad for over 25 years! This year EA Sports did a mighty fine job in the hoops department, now we will just have to wait to see what they will have in store for us come November, 22.
