| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Bought it for the duplexer and it jams constantly The only reason I bought this printer was the duplexer. Otherwise I could have purchased any number of <$100 printers that have otherwise identical specifications.
However, the duplexer on this printer is terrible. It curls the pages and jams frequently. Unjamming it is easy but time consuming and wastes paper.
As a simplex printer it is an unremarkable inexpensive laser printer. | 1 | Today | great printer I've only had this a few weeks, but so far I love it. Fast, able to duplex. I haven't figured out all I hope to do on it, bookleting - at the right size, and such. But so far I'm VERY happy with what I am able to do, and the quality. I print a lot of books - both ebooks and downloaded out of print books that have been scanned. So this machine will no doubt get a pretty good workout. So far no jams or anything. My dh did comment on how light it was. I guess he was expecting a full size copy machine :-)
I've been looking at this for quite a while, and was thrilled at Amazon's price. The best by FAR at the time I got it. | 5 | Today | Another Winner from Brother I print a lot, most of it double-sided Government documents. This printer is a gem. It is fast, produces clean crisp copies, is reasonably quiet, and is low cost - both in purchase price and consumables.
It replaced a prior Brother laser (HL-1850) that also duplexed. The new printer is much faster, quieter, and cheaper than the old printer. The price of the printer was less than the price of a new toner cartridge and drum unit.
As more and more documents are printed on both sides these days - call it green or smart or frugal - the ability to have automatic duplexing becomes more important. The HL-5250DN offers both automatic and manual duplexing. (Why one would want to use manual duplexing is beyond me.) Most duplexing available allows for the printing as if you were reading a book bound on the left side. The 5250 also allows for duplexing where you flip the documents upward (as if in a prong folder or clipboard) as well as from the bottom or the right. It is the most versatile printer duplexing I have found.
The built-in networking worked the first time and the set-up was easy. The copies are sharp and clear with excellent registration.
There are two areas where the old Brother printer (HL-1850) was superior to the new one - there is no straight through paper path so envelopes and other bulky items may now sometimes develop wrinkles when printed and there are no status messages, just flashing indicator lamps.
With drivers for Windows (including Vista), Mac, and Linux I can easily recommend this printer. | 5 | Today | Near-great and well priced I had a slow but bullet-proof HP 4L that this Brother printer replaced some two years ago. My first impression of the Brother HL-5250DN in comparison was mostly negative in that it was nowhere near as rugged as the 4L, would not last as long in my estimation, was noisier, created a huge current draw on startup (that actually set off my UPS alarm), and it crinkled envelopes.
All that is still true, two years later, but it has yet to fail, it prints quickly and beautifully, the original toner cartridge lasted a long time, the duplex works without fail, non-oem toner cartridges are available at modest cost (under $30 for a high yield - delivered) and the ethernet option does work (but it is tricky to set up and I still do not have it quite right).
Since you can buy this printer new/delivered off and on for under $200, I consider it a great bargain. The only really annoying feature is the crinking of envelopes and you get used to it. If perfect envelope handling is importaant to you, don't buy it. | 4 | Today | Good printer Bought it refurbished for something like $150. It works flawlessly and it has made life much easier for me, especially because of the duplex. This is great for anyone who has to print a lot of articles, chapters or anything with black text. | 5 | Today | Good, but... The price and features are just right. However, printing leaves roller marks on the paper that while light, ruin shiny paper. Other than that, it prints crisp text images front and back with the duplex option very fast. If it wasn't for the marks on the paper I would have given it a higher score. Overall a solid buy. | 3 | Today | Great little printer! I've been using a Brother HL-5250DN for about a year. It never misfeeds and is very fast and reliable. I would highly recommend this printer. It's simple to use and has great print quality.
Another reviewer noted that the printer sounds like an old creaking house - I was surprised when I got mine to find out that *this is exactly what it sounds like.* But it's not troublesome and not very loud - just creaks a bit when working.
My only minor complaint is that it seems to wrinkle the one corner of standard envelopes when I feed them through. The print comes out well but somehow it just wrinkles a small area of the envelope (like if you ironed in a wrinkle on a shirt). It's totally harmless and the envelopes still look fine and do their job. Just FYI.
You can't beat this printer for the price, I think. | 5 | Today | Good features/performance, but toner sensor annoying This is a superb printer for its size and features. The print quality is excellent. The duplex feature is perfect, but it can curl the paper. Networking connection is very useful.
The only thing that annoys me about this printer is the sensors that monitor toner life. I don't refill, but I expect the toner to finish (print quality to drop), rather than the optical sensors detecting a drop in toner level and ending the printing before the toner has truly finished. Thankfully these sensors can be tricked by covering the small clear side windows on both sides of the toner cartridge.
Cost wise the low yield toner is not worth the purchase and I personally would only replace the drum once and then on the next drum replacement change the unit. Factor in a possible repair at around 50000 pages and it much cheaper to do this. If the print quality is fine and the printer wants the drum replaced, reset the drum counter and replace the drum when required (Instuctions in the manual). | 4 | Today | workhorse This is a great workhorse monochrome(black & white) laser printer for an office setting that really only needs to print letters and the like. The duplexing feature is nice to have but not used that often. If you print to different types of papers(i.e., checks, invoices, plain paper) you can add 2 additional paper trays for a total of three and through the printer software select which tray to use. This saves the hassle of having to load other types of papers. The trays are expensive compared to the printer. If you need to print on legal paper you can use the manual paper feed. Excellent value for the money! | 5 | Today | A Simple Fast Office Printer The HL-5250DN works great for a small office. We're an office of six and this handles our work load so much better then HL-2070N. Definitely a good buy. | 4 | Today |
