| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Yes, there's duplexing with the Mac This is a terrific printer--fast, virtually trouble free, high quality output. I had the older 5170DN before, but it died, so I replaced it with the 5280DW which is the same as the 5250DNT but with the wireless feature. In response to the reviewer who said the 5250DNT duplexing only works with Windows: The duplexing function for the Mac is accessed through the printer driver>layout options. Choose Printer>Presets>Layout>Left-sided Binding. I have no complaints with the operations or output for the printer, but the Brother documentation leaves MUCH to be desired. After reading the CD documentation I called tech support with about 10 questions not adequately addressed in it. Also, I had to call tech support to get the wireless properly set up. Tech support was very good, though I had to wait for it. I purchased a second full paper tray which is great for recycling and added convenience. The Mac recognized it instantly; no software setup was required because it's all built into the printer driver. This printer lets you have it just about any way you want it in regards to DPI, tray/feed sequences, overall print quality (Brother's Photo, Graphic, or Generic), but you have to explore the options in the Print Settings. All your settings can be saved and named to provide the choices you want when you click "Print." I reiterate: A terrific printer. | 5 | Today | A great printer reasonably priced I bought this printer to replace my old trusted Apple Laser 360 because I could not find reliable ink cartridges for the Apple. Installation and networking were incredibly easy with the Brother HL5250. The instructions are very easy to follow, and the machine works beautifully, without any problems. The HL-5250 is quiet and printing is clear, and fast. I can also say that there is no curling of the paper, as has been reported in some reviews of this machine. I am extremely pleased with this printer! | 5 | Today | Doesn't get any better I performed an exhaustive search for the right mono laser printer. I landed the Brother HL-5250DNT, and I couldn't be happier.
Here's what I was looking for during my search.
1) Speed (first page and pages per minute)
2) Image quality
3) Economic consumables
4) Connectivity (USB and parallel minimum, networkable a plus)
5) Expandability
6) Duplex printing a big plus
7) Size - nothing too huge
8) Quiet
Here's what I got.
1) I am amazed at how fast this printer is. It prints the first page almost immediately. Wakes up from sleep mode instantly and prints quickly. Great PPM speed.
2) Excellent quality text and graphics. Photos print out very well with no banding.
3) Toner cartridge has good page rating (3,500 @ 5%) and replacements are relatively inexpensive. High yield cart is about $50 for 7,000 pages @ 5%.
4) Comes with USB, parallel, and Ethernet - the triple play
5) Expandability - it already comes with a second paper tray (about $50 more than the model without the tray. Separately, the tray is about $120) Holds an amazing 550 pages. Also accepts up to 512MB additional memory in easy access slot.
6) I fell in love with duplex printing. I keep duplex on all the time. Cuts paper use almost in half (some printouts have odd number of pages to print).
7) Nice footprint. Fits nicely on desktop. Solid, but not very heavy.
8) Zero noise in sleep mode. Much quieter than my Minolta when printing. Love it.
I was impressed at how easy it was to set up. Load the Vista drivers (yes, a Vista CD is included), plug in the printer, and you're golden. Printed flawlessly the first time. Setup program let me designate the second paper tray. Just make sure you load the CD before you hook up the printer. Lots of flexibility with setup options. Driver/utilities do not take up a large amount of disk space. Much better than HP software clogging up the system.
Regarding page curl, I am using a basic 20lb paper (Boise) and the page curl is marginal. Definitely not annoying. In fact, lie the paper flat after printing, and it flattens out quickly. Very slight curl on premium 24lb paper (Hammermill).
If you need to print large docs, this printer is definitely a workhorse. Over several years, the price difference between this and a "personal" laser printer will be insignificant. Go with the solid workhorse and don't look back. | 5 | Today | Superb Over several decades, have purchased printers from Brother company. Each has been trouble-free, and all remain in operatonal condition. Other brands have good products, but none better than Brother.
Only slight negative for this latest purchase is that instructions seem rather limited relevant to initial installation. However, installation and operational features worked perfectly from initial installation. | 5 | Today | Addressing the second tray Typical Brother reliability, well built. First page speed is about 20 seconds. Networking is flawless, setup is easy, and the darn thing even has its own web page with multiple admin pages.
But the coolest feature of this printer is woefully undocumented. How can you use the printer with two different kinds of paper?
Under Windows, the driver for this product wrongly assumes that you purchased the 5250DN, which only has one tray. The second tray is not known to the print driver until you select: "Start" "Printers and Faxes". Right click on the printer, then select the "Accessories" tab. "Add" the LT-5300 (the second tray). Before you leave this screen...
Let's assume that you want to put letterhead in tray 2, but you normally print on plain paper (tray 1). Select the "General" tab, then "Print Preferences". Now change the "paper source" from "auto select" to "Tray 1". This will ensure that you won't print on letterhead when the plain paper runs out!
| 5 | Today | Fast, quiet, efficient The Brother laser printer has been a big money saver, as it relieves me of having to go to Kinko's to get copying done, as the cost per page is lower to print out a document multiple times than to get it copied. Should have done this sooner. | 5 | Today | GOOD PRINTER...GREAT PRICE I have bought 3 of these so I have no room to complain. The software is a bit non-intuitive, but nothing that is too difficult to figure out. The thing comes with a 2nd tray and duplex printing capabilities on Windows, and the $305 price tag beats the pants off of any other printers. Quality wise, it's all plastic just like all of the other ones.
4 stars just because of the software-configuring issues. | 4 | Today | Networking Brother HL-5250DNT First printer I received would not feed from second tray, emailed Amazon.com and they sent me a whole new printer pronto, excellent service. The new printer worked fine from both trays. Quite easy to set up printer and network, easy to install on all work-stations, works well though sensitive to cheaper laser paper, but very easy to fix paper jams. Very good value for money. Would buy another one. | 4 | Today | Design flaw causes envelopes to crease Users of this product have mentioned here and on other product forums that this printer creases envelopes as it prints them. Indeed, according to reviewers, the creasing seems to occur at the same spot on the envelopes in most cases which spells design flaw in my book.
Except for this one point, this is one terrific printer. It's easy to set up and easy to use. I like the fact that it's always on and if a go a few days without printing and then send a document to the printer, it wakes up from its slumber very quickly and produces a gorgeous hard copy.
If creased envelopes don't bother you, this is the printer to buy. | 4 | Today | Fast, but flawed I was looking for a fast, reliable, networkable printer with duplexing. This Brother HL seemed to fit the bill perfectly. However, after using it for awhile, I would have bought another printer.
It is really fast, and prints jobs quickly with little or no delay. But, it has bad paper curl after the first 20 prints. I've tried several thicknesses of paper, but it continues to output curled pages after it heats up.
Also, it has a manual feed that only accepts about 15-20 pages, what a pain! I wouldn't need the manual feed as much if it would actually duplex pages, but the manual informed me (after my purchase, of course) that duplexing only works in a Windows environment. Oh well.
In Sum, this is a fast, inexpensive printer with adequate output quality, but the curl, manual feed, and duplexing issues are problematic. | 3 | Today |
