| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | It works well I have only had the printer a short period of time. I plugged it in and connected it, and it works very well. The print quality is fine. | 5 | Today | Solid low-cost monochrome laser printer This iteration of Brother's basic laser printer, like the HL-5040 and 5140 before it, function well for everyday business use where low to medium volume printing is the daily requirement.
One big advantage is that this machine comes with both USB and parallel ports, one of very few in this price range to have such versatility. | 4 | Today | Forget printing envelopes I have been a Brother printer user for years - and have had good experiences with all Brother products except my current printer, an HL-5240. In spite of following every Brother guideline and telephone instruction, and in spite of trying many different kinds of (#10) envelopes, this printer simply cannot print a #10 envelope without creasing it. For my purposes, this makes it just about useless. Brother has been no help; its customer service people merely state the obvious (about how to print envelopes) and suggest using different kinds of raw stock (which I have - even though this obviates using my own printed stationary). Nothing has solved the problem. If you don't need to print envelopes, this is a fine printer -- if you do need to print envelopes, look elsewhere. | 2 | Today | Wish I had My Brother Hl-5140 Back! This printer makes a clicking noise when you fist start it up. Brother customer service says this is normal! What ever you do, do not fill the paper try too high, the machine will jam. By to high I mean lower than the trays capacity. I am very disappointed with this model. The old HL-5140 was the best laser printer I ever had. This model is border line junk. Plus the new software does not support my Apple Airport Extreme, like the HL-5140 did. Customer support says there are some glitches with OS 10.5.2., so I can't go wireless, a real bummer! Good luck if you purchase this printer. Another disappointment.
Update-Do not try to run envelopes thru this printer! They are almost impossible to put in the feeder properly and end up creased when they come out. Worst printer I have ever owned! | 2 | Today | Defects An earlier Brother laser printer that I had (HL-1440) did not exhibit any problems, so I bought this one which is significantly faster.
Like others, I have had problems with this printer. Specifically:
* When I first used it, it would only accept a small number of pages before it would make a clicking sound and refuse to print. This problem can be corrected by adjusting the plastic tabs at the rear of the paper tray.
* I have had the same problem with the printer crinkling envelopes that other users have had. This is a serious problem if you're using the printer for formal correspondence.
* The printer runs hot after the first 20 or so copies, causing paper to curl. To some extent, this problem can be dealt with by turning the paper over in the tray, trying to take advantage of its natural curl to offset this effect, but it is impossible to offset it completely.
These problems are irritating enough that I would not purchase a Brother printer again.
| 1 | Today | Another disposable printer I've had pretty good luck with Brother printers. Okay speed, good print quality, last awhile. Drum units are expensive though. Once it's time to replace your drum, almost cheaper to just toss the thing and buy a new one. Buy a new drum, or spend an extra $30 and get a new printer with a new drum, new toner cartridge etc...hmmmm, tough choice. | 4 | Today | Horrible, Stay Away This is my second Brother HL-5240, the first started screaming when I tried to print and then just stopped. Not working at all, I called a local repair shop who took it back, replaced the drum, and about every other working part, and it still was the same, screaming.
They said I had to call for a replacement myself, which I did, and then they proceeded to make me go through a bunch of diagnostics which was a waste since the repair place already had done all that, plus so had I in trying to figure out if I could repair on my own. Very bad service. Finally they agreed it was a wreak and sent a replacement.
Now this replacement made the same scream the first time I set it up and printed, but that thankfully stopped.
I've owned Brothers in the past and they cause a power surge when you first send the print job occasionally bringing down the circuit breakers. I have to be so careful every time I print I'm praying to the power Gods just to let me have one page print without mishap.
The duplexing works, usually, but when it doesn't in creates quite the mess of crumpled paper. No rhyme or reason as to why it works sometimes but not always. The sliders for envelopes is very flimsy and I doubt it would hold up in a real office situation where you needed to print envelopes often.
Now this barely three month old machine has starting leaving a trail of extra dots on the page, a symptom of needing a new drum. All attempts at cleaning have not helped. Far to little service from this far too expensive to run printer. | 1 | Today | Brother HL - 5240 Laser printer I have had this laser printer for several months. Happy with Amazon's rapid delivery and the product's performance. | 5 | Today | A Good Printer at a Good Price. I wanted a replacement for my older Laser Printer. I have had this printer for several months and it works great. It was easy to hook up to my computer system. It is also smaller than my previous printer and runs much faster. | 5 | Today | Bad Brother This unit is practically new, purchased from Brothermall May 4,2007. Arrived making a very loud squeaking noise which ran us crazy. They were great and sent down a new drum and toner assembly. When the toner ran out this week I ordered another at $99 from Brothermall. When their new toner would not fit their new drum I called and was informed that I would have to buy a new drum at $188.99 since the one they sent in May was out of 90 day warranty !!! So...to get this almost new $160 printer running I need to spend $99 + $188.99 , a total of $448 in 6 months !!! Beware of this company. | 2 | Today |
