| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Good machine so far... I bought this machine specifically to print on envelopes and checks. It is the only laser all-in-one that has a multi-purpose tray at a good price. I was concerned that the snake paper path would not print well on envelopes, but there does not seem to be a unit with a nice straight-through paper path like my old HP 5Mp.
When I ran my first envelope, I was disappointed at the creases in it, so I visited the Brother web site and followed the extensive how-to. There are a couple of levers in the back of the machine you must flip and then using the network setup (control center 2) you set the MP tray to thick. Then let the machine crank through your stack of envelopes.
I just printed 200 heavyweight envelopes with NO creases. So it pays to read the tech support. The page goes on to state that if you are getting creased envelopes, you may need to be sent a new machine.
One problem I did encounter was a loss of communication (I'm using my MFC over an Ethernet connection), but cycling power brought it back on-line. Will tell you more as time goes on.
*** So here's the update. Still printing/faxing/scanning/copying just great. The network problem was that sleep mode was turned on. So I turned it off. Find sleep timer in the menu and then with the cursor on sleep time press the 'Secure' and 'Job Cancel' buttons at the same time. Then turn sleep off. And guess what? The machine goes 'idle' instead of 'sleeping'. It doesn't use any more power in 'idle' over 'sleep' according to tech support. | 4 | Today | Great Small Business Printer I got this a few weeks ago for my small business. I print about 25-50 pages a day and scan frequently. The printing is fantastic. Sharp, super fast prints. The paper curls a little, but it's not a big deal to me since I mostly print invoices that end up stuck in a box anyway.
Envelopes do crease, but nothing terrible. I just hold the envelope steady with my finger and it very usable. If you print more than say 1 envelope a week, I'd search for an envelope printer or use labels instead.
The return address top corner does crease a bit and doesn't print well there. However, it's not bad at all for the main address and looks fine to me using Costco #10 envelopes.
Scanning is simple and not a ton of features...I find 300 DPI works well for magazine images to avoid Moire patterns. Photo scans are fine and I deal with graphics regularly. Scanning to PDF and email are very helpful.
I can also avoid the software with the user interface.
I have not faxed anything or copied anything yet. Will do so sometime soon to see how it it.
My main reason for 4 out of 5 stars is the loud hum it makes when printing, the slight crease in envelopes, and the annoying beeping when I open the paper tray. It gives off a lot of heat too - which can get warm in a small room.
**Tried it out on copying and it's faster than the copier place down the road. Excellent copying. Works GREAT in both VISTA and XP. No problems as a network printer. | 4 | Today | A Great Multifunction Laser Printer When I bought a new Apple iMac earlier this year, I found that my HP laserjet 3200 would not work with the new Apple Leopard OS and HP did not have drivers that would fix the problem. I went shopping at the local office supply stores and read the Amazon reviews and finally settled on this Brother printer. Wanted the speed of a laser printer and did not need color. Fax was important, copier useful and scanner a nice bonus. I was somewhat concerned after reading some of the reviews of this product by others but so far (2 months) I have had none of their problems. The 8460N worked right out of the box. Setup with the iMac was painless and I now have it set up as a bonjour printer attached to my new Apple Time Capsule. No problem with that setup either, once I realized I had to uninstall it as a USB printer and reinstall as a bonjour printer. When it is in sleep mode, it is completely quiet. When I send it a document, it wakes quickly, prints very quickly and will go back to sleep mode if not given more work to do. It does not make excessive noise while it is printing, relative to the HPs I have owned. And there is no noise when it is in sleep mode.
Compared to the HPs I looked at, this Brother seems well constructed and durable.
The only minor negative that others have also mentioned is that the printed pages are delivered in the cavity below the copier deck, which you can see in the picture of it. Not a major issue but can be a bit hard to get hold of all the pages from this spot.
So far I am completely satisfied with my decision to buy this printer and am comfortable recommending it without reservation. | 5 | Today | Worse printer ever produced I have this printer for about 3 months and it just never stop giving problems. It was noisey and always saying no paper, called the technician and they replaced it. same problem. the technician said that was a problem with these printers. So I upgraded to a wireless
MFC-8870DW. that did not solve the problem.
If you look at it, its the same printer with a wireless card.
They took it back for repairs and gave me a refurbished 8460 as a loaner, and guess what same problem.
SO TAKE MY ADVICE, DO NOT PURCHASE BROTHER PRINTERS. | 1 | Today | Not bad, not great. Featurewise, it's a nice printer, network attached and can scan directly to network shares / email addresses using presets (without a computer plugged into it). On the bad side, I purchased three of these, and had issues the first week. The first one developed a clicking sound in the feed (though it works without errors), and the second one started generating a spurious error message and refused to print, indicating that the toner was exhausted (even with a new cartridge). The solution to this was a reset procedure not covered by the user's manual, and required a call to Brother (which had pretty decent support). I've had other Brother fax machines before, and they are usually pretty bulletproof. | 3 | Today | minimal Brother 7820N:
1. Cannot reliably print envelopes, including and especially #10. If that's important to you, find another machine.
2. Scan for fax very slow. VERY slow. Interminable.
3. Software minimal, very poorly designed. Fax and scan management thin, missing functions and management options.
4. Support (help; manuals; online) incomplete, inaccurate.
5. Will not automatically re-set after paper jam clear. (Have to power cycle.)
Everything about the machine says "absolute minimum"--fit, function, design, engineering, materials, assembly, software (incl driver).
A reasonable guess: Brother put the machine out there to hit a price point. Sold a bundle of them on the strength of early reviews. | 2 | Today | DO NOT BOTHER I assume other printers/copiers must do their jobs better than this one. The quality of the output is fine but I have constantly had to clean the drum (done easily, admittedly). The two worst features are its inability to print envelopes--at least five creases per envelope on every try--and the print/copy output comes out very curled and winds up on the floor. This printer appears unable to copy/print more than ten pages without pushing it into a messy pile or all the way onto the floor. And did I mention the high degree of curling of the output (I did, but I will do it again). As a small business I will not buy a Brother printer-assuming they all share these faults (admittedly could be wrong). I will search another company's product line. | 2 | Today | Oh, Brother !!!!! You are fast and cheap. The printer is fast in all respects: printing, warm-up, copying, scanning and faxing. The automatic paper feed is outstanding. The output (printing and copying) is clear and excellent. The only negatives are that the envelopes get creased pretty badly when being printed and the paper seems to curl a lot. The creased envelopes, I think, has to do with the tightness of the paper feed. The creasing occurs only in the lower right quandrant of the printed envelope. The curled paper probably has to with heat within the unit (I never turn the printer off) although it goes into a "sleep mode" when unused.
I still recommend the printer because I generate a lot of paper output and create few envelopes. I am investigating a better grade of paper which may solve the curled paper issue. This is a fantastic value and it a good-looking device. | 3 | Today | Nice small office printer I have always been happy with Brother printers, and this one is no exception. It prints fast and clear, the functions are plentiful and it doesn't take up all that much desk space. One thing I have noticed is that the paper gets kind of curled after if comes out of the machine if you print a bunch of copies. And it's not very convenient to get the printed pages out of the middle of the machine. But overall, a very nice machine and one that I would recommend. | 4 | Today | Super fast little guy We have been using this printer for a little over a month now at work where we print an average of about 100 pages a day and this little guy chugs through it like it was nothing. The best part of it all is the speed. It is quick to warm up and prints 30ppm, which is a billion times faster than our previous Brother printer (or so it seems). The print quality is excellent but so are most laser printers so that's not really a stand-out. As mentioned by everyone else here, the envelopes do get a little crinkled when they are printed through the printer but that beats our last brother printer that seemed to jam more often than not when printing envelopes. I have yet to have an envelope jam. A trade off (crinkled envelope to jammed envelope) we are willing to take any day. To print an enveiope you have to open a little door in the front of the printer to access the feed for it. Not a big deal but I thought I would mention it. So, why four stars? Well, the crinkled envelope issue mainly and also the plastic quality used to build the machine seems a little cheap (at least compared to our last Brother printer). Definitely not a big deal but warrants the four stars. | 4 | Today |
