| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Great sound for non-audiophile receiver I've had this receiver for a few months and enjoy listening to it. I'm a conservatory-trained musician, and listen to mostly classical, some folk. My previous amp was an old NAD which I'd found on eBay -- wonderful sound, but it had become unusable. When I first tried the Onkyo I wasn't convinced, however after setting it to direct audio mode the sound was much better, and that's where I keep it. I have Bowers & Wilkens bookshelf speakers and a Yamaha subwoofer. The only thing the NAD had over this is that it was probably a little warmer sounding, but the Onkyo is very clean and full and the sound has a lot of quality to it. | 5 | Today | Good basic receiver I picked up the Onkyo TX-8522 2 weeks ago. I was looking to replace a 20 year old Onkyo TX-65 which I always liked, and this model is basically an updated version of that one. As far as sound clarity and power, it's great. You won't regret purchasing this for a basic home stereo set-up. Radio reception is excellent...I say that because the unit is located in our finished basement, with only the included "wire" antenna, and it pulls in most stations okay. If you still own and occasionally use a turntable like I do, this unit is also a great choice since it has phono inputs (most receivers today no longer do).
The only 2 minor gripes I have are the following : First, I wish the remote would allow you to adjust bass and treble levels instead of just volume (and I also wish that the volume controls weren't located at the very bottom of the remote....very poor placement in my opinion). And secondly, my old TX-65 had a "loudness" button which would boost bass levels at low volume levels. That was quite useful at times and I kind of miss that on the 8522.
| 4 | Today | Great Stereo Receiver Yes, I would buy this same unit all over again. What is not to like? I also really appreciate the Amazon reviews which allow me to gather real information from other buyers. | 5 | Today | Onkyo TX-8522 100 Watt Stereo Receiver I am pleased with this receiver and would say it is a good bargain for the price. | 4 | Today | Very disappointed I am very disappointed with this product. I ordered this receiver after reading high rated reviews. I am replacing a 25 year old Harmon Kardon amplifier that finally fizzled. The sound quality of this receiver is so poor that it is unbeleivable. I have purchased low price radios at Walmart that sound better. There is no midrange and the bass is weak at best. I also have a worn out 25 year old Sherwood amp that I have compared it to so I know that it is not my speakers. This unit just does not have it. I also purchased the Onkyo 390 Cd player and found it to be less than wowing. This will be my last Onkyo purhase. | 2 | Today | Very Good Receiver I am a long time music lover and amateur electric guitar player. I needed a receiver for a simple home stereo set-up. I received this unit today.
When I started the process of reading review after review and visiting different stores, my primary desire was for a receiver that would accept a turntable. I wanted around 50 watts per channel (stereo) with a bunch of inputs and a good tuner. Clear, quality sound with a wide frequency response was very important. My limit was about $300 US. This unit was the best fit.
This receiver is for my living room and is being used with 27 year old Sansui 3-ways rated for 50 watts (I have had these connected to 35 and 50 watt amps in the past), a Technics turntable and a Sony disc changer. At a little past halfway on the volume knob my speakers are starting to distort. Ample power for my needs.
Very good sound separation and quality to my ears. Would be excellent if the bass response was a little punchier. Don't get me wrong, I am happy with the sound.
The tuner brings in a stronger FM signal than my last receiver did and has plenty of presets.
Many nice features on this receiver like the remote control functions and XM capability.
At $220 I have no complaints and think that this is a great deal.
| 4 | Today | Good Stuff I read the previous reviews on this receiver. It does generate some heat - I put it at the top of the cabinet - no problems yet. Plan on adding some ventilation fans. The sound is great. The wife was gone so I took the Cerwin Vega's for a ride - loud enough to put a decent wave in the refreshment glass and cause pain to my hearing without any noticable distortion. The front panel is easy to use - no instruction book needed. Great product at the price. | 5 | Today | onkyo tx 8522 100 watt receiver My husband and I bought this receiver for my son for X-mas. He said that the sound was really great. He could hear his music so much better and could distinguish instruments better. Loves it. | 5 | Today | Great Receiver!!! This receiver is everything it was reported to be and more. I am thoroughly enjoying it.........it's great!!!! | 5 | Today | Fabulous two-channel receiver!! I'll start off by saying that I am NOT a video/home theater guy. I'm an audio guide. A basic, two-channel, stereo audio guy. So when my beloved 25-year-old Yamaha stereo receiver died not too long ago, I was heartbroken. In this day of receivers with mega bells and whistles and video inputs and outputs, I feared that I wouldn't be able to find a basic two-channel receiver to replace my Yamaha. I was wrong. After doing several hours of research online, I discovered that the Onkyo TX-8522 was the receiver for me. And I was thrilled to find out that I could get it from Amazon.com. When the receiver was delivered, I was still a bit fearful that the new receiver wouldn't come close to the quality of my old receiver. But I was wrong again. From the moment I took the Onkyo out of the box, I could tell it was a quality built product. After hooking it up to my classic JBL speakers, Harman Kardon equalizer, and Sony CD player, I was excited to power it up. And when I did? Wow...was I pleased! The sound of the Onkyo is great, whether I'm listening to CDs, the radio, or piping music through it from my computer's iTunes library via my Airport Express/AirTunes hookup. The power it kicks out is impressive, too. I like to listen to my music pretty loud, and I have yet to have the volume knob anywhere near the halfway point. I should note, too, that the TX-8522's radio reception is fabulous. Both FM and AM stations come in loud and clear. This was a pleasant surprise, considering my Yamaha's radio reception was lousy. All in all, this receiver is top-notch. It has just enough features to satisfy me, the diehard audio guy. And none of the over-the-top bells and whistles that I just don't need. The remote is pretty handy, too. If you're looking for a basic two-channel stereo receiver that sounds great, I highly recommend the Onkyo TX-8522. It really is a nice piece of audio equipment! | 5 | Today |
