To be fair, I rarely have any more than 1 of them at time on out of fear of overheating since they're all in an enclosed space with the PC and a PS3 (those run really hot!), but thus far I've had no issues at all. Good sleek design that appears stackable, but I wouldn't do that, again out of overheating concerns. Would be nice to have a desktop rack to mount these on. 4 Today Piece of crap Does not work!!! This is a piece of crap. Do not buy! I have a Maxtor external hard drive that works great. I have only had this Lacie drive for a few months and have used it only a handful of times and it just doesn't work anymore! Wish I had time to write more! 1 Today Overheats There is not adequate ventilation, so if you are doing a large backup, your drive can overheat and fry. Trust me on this... 1 Today Decent drive, but could use improvements Data-wise and speed-wise, it's excellent. Lots of improvement potential though. 1-You have to turn it on every time you use it. This can be annoying. 2-included USB cable is extremely short. 3-It can get very noisy. I prevent this by placing it on top of sound-absorbing materials. I'd get the WD drive for a bit more, personally, but this one's fine. 4 Today Works for me I'm amused that people keep mentioning the cool design. It just looks like a silver box to me, with a few random "notches." But who cares? What matters is that it works, it's quiet, easy to set up, and the backup is simple to use. I've had it for about 2 months, and so far, so good. 5 Today Looking to soon buy another! Had a bit of trouble setting it up, which Lacie could avoid if they had the solution for the problem(others have had I am sure) in an easily found place which dealt specifically with the difficulty I was having. But their technical support, which helped me rectify the issue in a matter of hours was excellent. And at this price and for the length of the guarantee they give you for the hard drive ...in my opinion, you will not find a better deal for this much memory...anytime soon! 5 Today Failed shortly after warranty expired Note: I only gave one star because it is impossible to give zero or negative stars. I'm sitting here watching a light flash on and off on my 500gb Lacie USB 2.0 external drive. Right now that is the only thing this little box does. It cannot be recognized by my computer anymore. The research I've done tells me that this is indicative of a failed board in the case, so the case is totaled. I'll have to extract the drive itself and put it in another enclosure. So yeah, Epic Fail for Lacie. Big pain in the posterior for me, since now I have to do surgery on this box to get the drive out and hopefully recover my files. However, it's good to take a lesson away from every disappointment. My lesson is that Lacie makes very aesthetically pleasing low quality junk. 1 Today So far, it is perfect I have only had this hard drive for about a month, so we'll have to see how long it lasts but so far it is great. Tons of storage for the price and as a drive to backup my computer it is plenty fast. Also super simple construction without anything special. Works perfectly fine so far. 5 Today Good as long as you have a well ventilated setup. It has now been six months that I have two of these. From the onset I was worried about the fan-less design because of (1) the reviews on Amazon, (2) my engineering background and (3) where I live: Costa Rica is warm. Nevertheless, considering the low price I decided to give them a chance. Now I understand that six months continual operation is not a proof of anything, but I have them both installed stacked up one above the other on a table in a non-air-conditioned room with a tin roof, next to the noodle rack and a PC that needs to work open (as in cover off) because its ventilation system is too weak, and they have been doing just fine. OK I have a trick: a small table-top fan blowing on the setup to ventilate it. Although this is not a valid solution for most people, I believe that running these guys in a cool place as long as air can circulate around them (i.e. probably don't stack them up!) and or intermittently (as in switched on when you need them and switched off right after that) they should run all right for a long time. Two last remarks on why not five stars: The on off button is not a bistable switch but a push on button, so whenever the current goes away the drive remains off when the rest of the system starts up again. That is not a problem in the US where the grid is reliable 9you should always have a UPS for these short outages anyway) but it is definitely a drag for us down in Costa Rica. Last thing: the power supply plug is a weird thing so you'd better be sure to remember where you store the wall wart as it would not be easily replaceable with one from your junk box.
