HOW TO FIX THE FILTER THAT STOPS SPINNING!!
This vacuum has a good cleaning system when it works. It seems the problem that I've had along with the problem most other people have is the filter stops spinning and gets clogged. This means the vacuum won't pick up anything and the hose won't work. I took the vacuum apart today and figured out how to fix it. 1. Take all the screws out of the top part of the vacuum to pull the white and orange( or other color i guess on different models). 2. Clean out all the gunk in the filter and around it with a flathead screwdriver. It helps to have another vacuum to suck up the the gunk from the filter if you have another vacuum. 3. On the right side of the filter is the motor to spin the filter. It should still work. The reason the filter stops spinning in the first place is that gunk gets built up on the sides of the filter creating too much friction and it breaks a piece connecting the motor to the filter. Take the outer part of the motor enclosure off. There seems to be screws holding it in place but its just one latch. You only need to pry it open enough to get the big white gear out. This gear connects to the filter. Once you get it out, if you look closely at it, you see that what used to be a rectangular shape has turned into a circular one. Fill this hole up half way with some super glue ( I used gorilla glue) and put it back in place. 4.Put the vacuum back together and wait a few hours. Hope this helps. It worked for me. Nothing special.
I got the Windtunnel because most of the folks on the old POFAK (parents of kids with food allergies) list agreed that if you couldn't afford a Dyson, the Windtunnel was second best. I got the bagless, and I haven't been nearly as happy with that one as I was expecting. There is no handle on the dumpy cup, so it can be tough to hold on to. Dumping it is definitely a two-handed operation, and since I also have to hold open the lid on the dumpster while emptying the cup, that's a big PITB. When I pull the cup out, it always spills a little bit. It's not a bunch, but then I feel the need to vacuum up the little spill after I dump the cup. I've started taking the whole vacuum outside when I empty it! Dog hair sticks in the cup, so you have to reach in and pull it out. Also, if I flip the cup over to pull stuff out of it, sometimes the filter thingy falls out, and then I have to dig it out of the dumpster. My dog sheds so much that I have to empty the cup every time I vacuum one room. His hair also gets stuck on/around the beater brush, and that's a HUGE PAIN to clean (this is true of every vacuum I've ever used). The pet hair tool is all but worthless. The suction is what spins the beater brush on it, so as soon as you put it down against the couch cushion, it stops spinning. As far as cleaning goes... Whenever someone I know gets a Dyson, they go crazy about how well it works. I definitely didn't have that reaction with my Windtunnel. Overall, it's fine. Nothing spectacular about it. I think I might have been happy with the bagged version, except that then I'd be running out of bags. At this point, I'm torn between splurging to get the Dyson or just sucking it up (no pun intended) and living with the Windtunnel until we can replace our carpets with hard flooring, which I want to do anyway. I would not recommend the U8351 version of the Windtunnel unless you can get a *really* good deal on it.

JUNK!!!
The self cleaning HEPA filter does not work. After having this product for about a month I had to use my shop vacuum to clean out the filter. After 2 months the gear box failed and had to be replaced (covered under warranty) but I was without a vacuum for a few weeks. After that I was very careful and used my shop vacuum to clean out the HEPA filter after every 2 uses. It is ridiculous that you have to vacuum your vacuum when you're finished with it. After the warranty expired the gear box broke again rendering the vacuum useless. Do not waste your money on this product unless you like frustration.

A piece of JUNK!
Whatever you do don't buy this piece of crap. Never in my 50 years have I ever been so disappointed with a "major" purchase. Almost immediately after purchasing the machine we began to have problems. The vacuum has been serviced once under warranty and twice since the warranty expired. This doesn't include the numerous times I've had to disassemble it to clean it out enough for it to run even marginally. Not only does the vacuum break regularly and perform poorly it is a classic example of inferior design. Many of the features not only don't work as expected they actually are a detriment to the unit. For example, the so-called self cleaning filter in fact does not self clean adequately and eventually clogs causing the motor to fail. This failure then causes the filter to become so clogged it reduces the cleaning power to nil. This malfunction also causes dust and dirt to accumulate throughout the entire machine. The bagless system too requires frequent "heavy" cleaning. If I didn't have an air compressor I don't know how I would ever get it clean. The "real time" tool system clogs easily and the accessory brush will not spin because of the lack of suction. The latest failure is the on/off switch.

My last Hoover for awhile
If all of the other reviews don't convince you not to buy this product maybe this one will. I owned my Hoover for 7 months before I experienced the infamous self-cleaning HEPA filter malfunction. This must be a record based on the other reviews. Even after cleaning and unclogging the pet hair and other debris that accumulated behind the filter it never rotated again rendering the vacuum useless. I researched local service centers to find the nearest location was 30 miles away and no local vacuum cleaner shops would repair it under warranty, not Hoover's fault but certainly not convenient. The self-cleaning feature was the selling point as our other wind tunnel with a removable hepa filter was messy to clean and required a second vacuum to clean the filter of the other or $40 to replace the filter entirely. I should have returned this vacuum (the new U8351-900) after the first use as it littered dust and debis everywhere when the canister is removed for emptying. Often a hand held Eureka was used to clean up the mess. Fortunately the Lowe's where I purchased the vacuum gave me a full refund (even after 7 months) and I have since bought a Dyson. I may have paid a little more for the Dyson at Lowes but was grateful for the refund for the $259 junk Hoover. Fortunately it sounds as though Hoover has discontinued this model. I wish I could have given this item 0 stars, but 1 star is the minimum rating.

Worst vacuum ever made
I wont even give this piece of junk 1 star, but had to to right this review. Had it serviced already once, worked great for a day. Wow, all this for 239.00 at CC. There should be a class action lawsuit to give the owners of this piece of junk something. I will never buy another Hoover product again. How in God's name could you give this 5 stars. Did you use the product?

Hoover WindTunnel Bagless & Worthless
The HEPA "Self cleaning" filter isn't. It will load up and jam, and then the drive mechanism gears will strip. This happened in less than 15 months. Earlier, at 3 months the unit failed to start when the circuit board died. Repair was very slow because Hoover couldn't supply the circuit board. Other features to annoy - Unit was tippy and tools did not stay put. Narrow passages for dirt jammed near roller jammed. Hose did not stay put. I would avoid this Hoover and especially any bagless WindTunnel that has the rotating drum HEPA filter with the "self cleaning" feature. I will NOT buy another Hoover.

I really wanted to like this vacuum
I really wanted to like this vacuum. It looks great, has incredible suction and all the great features really work well. However, I took it back after using it twice and now own an Eureka Boss. Like most of the other reviewers, I immediately found that large amounts of dust fell down from the Hepa filter when emptying the plastic container which catches all the dirt, hair and dust and when I restarted the machine, this dust blew all over the room. Incredibly poor engineering on an otherwise useful tool. I would have thought by now, Hoover would have gotten the message :(

What a piece of junk!
This is the biggest, most worthless, piece of junk I have ever purchased! The "SELF CLEANING" Hepa filter does not self clean. I've had the vacuum for 6 months now and have had to take it apart twice to clean it out. The Hepa filter is supposed to rotate, after it gets jammed up, the motor strips out the gear going to the motor. The owners manual says to take to a authorized repair shop any time the filter stops rotating. This would be once every 3 months or approximately 12 uses. The good news is the built in indicator to let you know when the filter has stopped turning. It is a lovely burnt electrical smell as the motor struggles to spin the nylon gear around the axle.

Get this machine if you like cleaning it more than it cleaning
This thing has got to be the biggest piece of junk on the market. It would probably be better suited as a boat anchor (it weighs as much). The suction power on the handle is absolutely non existant. The filter gets clogged with the dirt that does not make it to the bottom of the dirt cup. I have never gotten to the point where the dirt cup was full, before I had to stop to unclog the filter. Then there is the HEPA filter. This thing gets clogged with hair and dust. Try cleaning this thing and get ready to pick up a pile of dust from your floor. I read the manual and it says that the HEPA filter needs to be cleaned by a repair technician at there facility. I just bought this thing 2 weeks ago! It does a decent job on carpet, but blows away the dust/debris on the wood floors before it gets a chance to suck it up. If you have to lift this thing up or down stairs, forget about it. Its gotta weigh 25 lbs and feels like 50 lbs. Save your money and your time. Buy a better vac. Hoover really dropped the ball on this one. I probably would never buy another Hoover product again. I would take this junk back (Sam's Club), but I did the moronic thing and threw away the box.
