The Epson V100 Pure Frustration
I have owned dozens of Epson products and two previous Epson scanners. They have all performed reliably. When my last trusty scanner started to show its age I figured the V100 would be a great replacement. Instead I feel thoroughly cheated by Epson. It has major trouble being properly recognized by the Twain drivers and instead prefers to go into some sort of hardware coma - blinking red or green light mode indefinitely. Repowering or reinitializing generally does not fix the problem. Sometimes a reboot will. Then if it does scan it has another problem where it starts to grind and click and the scans are smeared. When it does scan yes they are great scans. Epson's support is lousy. There is no acknowledgment of these faults on their website. They do not reply to emails. Phone support steps you through the usual routines. The only option I'm given after a month is to take it to a repair center.

I was pleasantly surprised.
After reading some of the negative comments regarding this scanner I was quite hesitant to buy one, but the price was right, so I did. I was pleasantly surprised. It worked as advertised and the setup was without complications (for my PC at least, it may be different for a Mac). One word of advice; I believe that some people may have had trouble because they did not install the software before they installed the hardware. If you install the hardware first the computer may assign the wrong driver to it and then you are in deep trouble. It is sometimes difficult to then get the right driver assigned and if this is not done the scanner will never work right (if at all). I scanned prints and slides without any trouble and I liked the way the film adapter stored in the cover. As far as the lack of an on/off switch goes; this is the third scanner that I have owned and neither of the previous two had one. I connect the scanner and my camera attachment to a separate terminal strip, which I can turn off, so the lack of an on/off switch is not a problem. Even if you do not do this, the lamp (which is the major power consumer) turns off automatically, so the lack of an internal switch is not a serious problem. (For those who do not know it, many of the things that you own, such as your TV and computer monitor do not completely turn off when you switch them off. There is generally some minimum power consumption to keep things warm. This minimizes the thermal shock when things are turned on and lengthens the component lives. If you want to actual turn things off you have to unplug them, or attach them through a terminal strip that has an on/off switch.) I mentioned that this is the third scanner that I have owned. The other two failed to operate after a while and I could never figure out why. The lamps worked, but the Twain failed to be recognized. This occurred when a new operating system was installed, so I am reasonably sure that it was a software problem. If anyone knows why this was the case, please let me know through the comments section. Thank you.

perfect for my use.
To start with Amazon blew me away with delivery. Ordered one afternoon and it was delivered next AM at 9:30. The scanner itself, was so easy to use, copies of perfect quality. It developed a small glitch with the software, but, there was a PHONE # to call and a LIVE PERSON answered with the expertise to get me going again real fast. A quality experience all around.

For the love of God, do NOT buy this scanner
This scanner is a perfect example of "you get what you pay for." It's a cheap piece of crap. I suppose it's okay if you want to scan a snapshot and do nothing to it--but if you want to try the various settings to do something "professional," prepare to be astounded. And confounded. The machine locks up and offers no way to unlock it. Among the most offensive things is that there is no power button. Imagine leaving a piece of equipment turned on, for eternity, to suck up valuable electric power! One doesn't even use a photo scanner all the time==so why leave it on forever? Can that really be Epson's intent? (Won't this anger Al Gore and Leo?) Every time the scanner locked up, I had to unplug the power source to unlock the process, because it won't restart the program again. Then my computer restarted itself every time I unplugged the power source--which damned near crashed my computer the 8th time I had to do it. There's got to be something better out there, even if it means spending a little more. I'm going to find it.

MAC USERS BE WARNED!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER!!!!!!!
The software that comes with this scanner claims to be Mac compatible. It really is not. This scanner simply DOES NOT WORK with a MAc OS system, at least not with my Intel 10.4.9. The EPSPON SCAN software does not boot up automatically. I was able to scan using the horrendous Arcsoft Photoimpression software, but only at the lowest resolution. Arcsoft crashes with anything over 800 dpi. How EPSPON can even claim their product is MAC-compatible is an almost fraudulent claim on their part. Call to EPSON yielded ZERO results. A NIGHTMARE. This may work with Windows. IT IS A TERRIBLE PRODUCT FOR MAC.

Great Value for a Very Good Scanner
Great price for a real good scanner. Delivery was quick, scans look great and I really like the way the lid opens from the side. I've had several other scaners over the years, this one is the best of all and the cheapest.

Over all I have found it to be a pretty good scanner
Epson Perfection V100 Photo Scanner (B11B184051) It was easy to set up and had a guide that was pretty good in helping with the questions I had. The extra software I have only begun to use, the photo editor (Photo Impressions)I gave a selection of choices when you did the photo fix. I was able to take my photos through the process and was well pleased. I haven't had a chance to see how it does with slides or how it restores. The software that copies a document to MS Word I have not used yet, but supposely you can edit the document. There is a lot to learn, but I am excited to learn all of it. One negative was in how to turn the scanner off. It took me a little while to find it, first the guide took me to the scanning light. In the process of reading the guide I found how to turn off the scanner itself, unplug the power source. The scanner does not have a on/off switch.

I am returning this scanner for a refund.
After four hours of telephone tech support (over an hour on hold) at my own expense, and replacement by Epson of the software, the copier function still will not work. Two Senior techs had me test the rest of my system thoroughly, and concurred that it is fine and the scanner should work - but it doesn't. I used telephone support because I never got a response to my initial online inquiry.

Not a bad scanner for the price (after rebate of course)
I'm assuming that you're buying this scanner because of the [...]rebate. If so, it's not a bad scanner. The build quality is on the cheap side. I actually had a Microtek 4800 which I had been using for the last 4 years. It did well over 20,000 scans and was still going strong, but my Dad needed a scanner. I had been avoiding Epson like the plague since the first scanner I even got made by them included NOTHING, not even a USB cable. So, I have to say that I was presently surprised by the inclusion of this cable and a slide-adaptor (quite rich trappings coming from Epson). The scan quality is about on par with my Microtek, so that tell's you what the quality is like. The whites come out a wee bit brighter and I like the 48-bit function. If you're not getting it under rebate, I wouldn't recommend this scanner. You'd do better with a Canon or Microtek at the same pricepoint. If at all possible, I always go with the Taiwanese vendors because they offer so many extras, their build quality is second to none, and because the prices are usually cheaper than all of the competition. That's my[...].

Satisfactory product, but not as good as I expect from Epson.
I bought this product to work with Windows Vista, and it does after I downloaded a driver from Epson's website. That said, I preferred the previous scanner's interface and ease of use with Windows XP. If not for the Vista problem I would much prefer my previous scanner to the V100 based on ease of use alone.
