I bought this printer for a friend as a gift, when we took it out of the box to try it out, it did not work. It gave an error "ink not recognized". Called Epson and they sent new ink cartridges, a week and half later all was OK.

The ink seems to just vanish in the printer and once one color is gone you can't use the printer even if you only want to print in black and white. Nope you need to plop down $15 or so to replace each color and there's 6.
Nice for Epson bad for customer.
As far as refilling yourself, forget it. They have a built in firewall to keep you from changing the chip in each packet.
I give Epson a big thumbs down and kiss my grits you jerks.

This printer is perfect! I haven't had an ounce of trouble with it. It quickly prints clean, professional-looking color photos and CDs as well as standard black print documents. Even more, I've printed over 100 pages (many with color) and 20 full-color CDs/DVDs, and the only cartridge I've had to replace so far is the black one. The other colors are holding up well. And these are the low-capacity cartridges that come with the printer. I can't wait to get the high-capacity cartridges--they'll probably last me for months. | 5 | Today | Not very durable
This was my wife's Christmas gift for me a year ago. Yep, you guessed it. Two weeks after the warranty expired the printer stopped functioning properly. I get an "ink cartridge not recognized" error. Unfortunately I bought several genuine, Epson ink cartridges to find out the problem was with the printer. Epson tells me that fixing it might cost more than a new unit.
This is my fourth Epson printer and the other three lasted at least 1000 pages each. Perhaps this one has printed 150. So I'm left with the decision: fix it and salvage the $85 worth of ink laying about or just chuck everything and get something better. Even when it worked the prints weren't that inspiring. I bought this to print black text on dvd's. I would think that it is total over kill for this but I was using a r260 before. It broke after a year. I went with this figuring that Epson made the dvd/cd feed feature better and learned from their first design. I think they did redesign the feeder because it looks like this one works different/better. I also bought the two year extended warranty.
Now to the ink usage. I really can not believe how much ink this printer uses. When I first got it I was excited to run it through it's paces and see how fantastic the prints were. I will admit that they looked good. But the problem is, who on earth could afford to spend the money it takes to make these prints? I made about 20 prints at 4 x6 and printed out maybe 100 pages of black and white text. Also maybe 100 black text dvd's, with just a minimal title. That took two black cartridges and 5 color ones. I figure it would cost about 90 dollars to print 50 to 60 4 x6 photos. These are the same photos that wal mart prints out for around 10 cents each. One of the big problems with this is the way the system works. First you can not print with any cartridge empty. Second the printer uses ink out of all the cartridges all the time. Every time it cleans itself it uses ink. Every time it starts is uses ink. This means that if you use the cartridges down below a quarter tank they will rapidly just keep depleting. Then what happens is you get some light areas on a print and that forces you to clean the nozzles. Unfortunately the cleaning blows out the ink and then it just refuses to clean or work. So picture that you have three cartridges that you let get low. They are color and you think "Ok, I will wait for my tax refund to replace them, and only print out black stuff". Wrong! You will never make it! They just keep getting lower, and then it will refuse to clean the nozzles. At that point you have to buy the cartridges, even when the software shows the cartridges still have ink in them. You know you could have printed for another month with some of the color ones on low, but the printer will not let you do that. It will demand to be cleaned and the cartridges are too low for a cleaning.
If you buy this, plan on having a couple of sets of cartridges on hand at all times. Three extra sets will only set you back about 280 bucks. But remember the printer was a steal at $100.

I installed the ink carts on the R380 and got the "ink carts cannot be recognized" message.
Found that this is a common problem when doing a search. I should have researched better.

This is a particularly fine printer. It works with or without a computer. It prints directly onto CDs and DVDs designed for that purpose. The LCD screen is big and beautiful. I recommend it highly. | 5 | Today | Ink Replacement
For those of you who have complained about still having ink left in the cartridges but are getting an "out of ink" or "replace cartridges" message, just get a cartridge chip resetter for less than $10. This will allow you to reset the cartridge and and continue using the ink cartridge until it is really empty, plus you can use generic ink cartidges when printing non-photos and have those reset after you refill them with cheap ink. Do a search on google for an Epson R380 Chip Resetter and you'll get plenty of hits.. Jsut make sure not to over-use the cartridges after they are empty because it might damage the print head. | 5 | Today | Defective out of the box
Printer immediately displayed printer error after first powerup. I noticed print heads seemed stuck so I gave them some gentle assistance. Next powerup seemed normal, hooray!. Unpacked and installed ink, pressed ok to continue...ink cartridges could not be detected. Double checked installation, reseated all cartridges, same result.
Called Epson and described the problem, they immediately offered to send new printer (sounds like a known issue). Currently waiting for delivery. Hoping for a better result. | 1 | Today | Updated Review....
This is a recent review for anyone considering purchasing this printer.
To get to the point of this review first: BUY THIS PRINTER!
If you like to print your own photos at home, are conscious of how good prints look from one printer to another, meaning, you can tell a bad photo from a good one after it prints, then this printer is for you.
The R380 I own, is actually my second one. My son was kind enough to flood our bathroom on the first floor, and the printer in my office underneath took a bath. Fried it! :( Thankfully, I was able to find this printer for the cheapest around oddly enough, at CompUSA. Was very surprised to see that, and happy. Online had it cheaper, but with shipping and the wait, it wasnt worth it. I got mine for $109. So that is pretty reasonable.
The only downside of this printer like already mentioned, is the price $$$$$ of the ink. Very expensive. $119 will get you a full new set of the higher capacity inks. 50% more prints, but has yet to be truly found out if that is true. The initial cartridges will dry up about as soon as you hit the power button. I was irate on my first printer as to how fast the initial cartridges dried up. EPSON could care less when I called to complain about this, trying to say it was this, or that. I even saw a forum that someone supposedly got them to send out new sets of ink when they complained, but I couldnt get them to budge. SO, be prepared to spend about $100 for the printer, and another $119 for the ink. Silly I know, but you have to factor it in.
Once that is said and done, this printer is awesome at printing and CD printing. The quality is top notch. I have used other photo paper for 4x6 prints (JetPrint Professional Photo Paper) with great results. Dont expect that you can only print on EPSON paper to get them looking fine, but also, keep in mind, the "100 year ink" idea they promote for these inks is really only meant for the EPSON papers. Outside of that, you could get fades faster on other papers.
