It works good but this drive is not for me. I have two problems with it and neither problem is clearly spelled out in the description. Its formated for the Mac --- I needed one that will work on both Mac & Windows. For a mac person this is complicated to make it work on Windows --- in addition to reformatting this drive, special software needs to be installed to make it work with windows. It must use two ports in order to operate: a USB port to supply power and another port (USB, Firewire 400, Firewire 800) for data. To make a long story short, I bought the 3 additional portable drives that I needed from WesternDigital --- their Passport drives are smaller, use only one USB port and work on both macs and windows right out of the box. 1 Today good stuff decent price i needed a hard drive and i wanted it small and semi attractive looking. if you like orange it has its funny little bumper thing. there 3 different ways to connect it to your computer so one should be right for you. i use the fire wire. it worked right away with my macbook. more difficult if you want to transfer between mac's and pc if you don't buy a certain program. sure it works fine with pc's but you might have to reformat. anyways, its pretty fast and quiet. i store my pictures and movies on it so i won't fill up my lap tops memory. i like it lot. i haven't had any problems and ive had it for about a month. i for definitely buy another one. and you can get different color bumpers for it if you don't like the orange. it comes off very easily. side note: its not all that rugged. but i did drop it once and it was fine soooo. yeah. good product 5 Today Great until it malfunctioned... I bought the drive at the end of January, come the beginning of May it full on broke. Before that, it was great. 160GB, highly reliable and very portable. However one morning I plugged it into my Macbook and it wasn't recognised. I tried a different Mac and different firewire cable but came up with nothing. Next step, I called Lacie. After 30mins of being kept on hold I spoke to an adviser who unhelpfully concluded that the hard drive needed repair after a long session of 'let's try this'. Lacie have agreed to repair the drive as it is still under warranty but I they cannot retrive any of the data on the drive itself. So if you are looking for a reliable portable external hard drive I recommend you look elsewhere as this one is not worth the money, for the drive to function less than 4 months of occasional use is not really acceptable. 2 Today very good backup works well with a 1 ghz emac; should work better with a firewire 800 computer 4 Today Defective Lacie 160 GB from Beach Camera I have received Lacie 160 GB rugged drive. But the product is defective. I have used it with my Mac OS X 10.5.2. First few times it properly mounts on my Macbook desktop. I have copied about 5 GB of vidio file. After that it doesn't mount. I can't use it anymore. I am going to return it. Beach Camer's return policy is not good. They will not refund 100%. Even for defective product they keep 10%. They will return only 90% of the product cost even for defective product, it surprises me. Careful before buying it from Beach Camera. 2 Today LaCie delivers again This is my fourth LaCie Rugged hard drive. I do a lot of on-site video editing and audio recording. I've read lots of reviews about this hard drives, saying that they're not so reliable, but to be quite honest, after four of these (I bought the first two years ago), I can speak for LaCie quality. Way to go! 5 Today Not quite what I expected. I'm glad to see the price is getting slashed on this product, it makes it a much more reasonable purchase. Here are my thoughts, some of the Pros may later be reconsidered in the grand scope of things. Pros: *Small, lightweight, extremely portable. *Multiple outputs to interface with the drive. More options does mean more wires, but the option is always nice to have. I prefer Firewire 800. *Powered directly through the USB or Firewire cables. You may have to plug it a second cable to your power source, but no additional power adapter is needed. *Extremely Mac friendly. (If that is your preferred platform) Cons: *Heats up to very high temperatures, sometimes quickly. *Initial cross platform compatibility problems. You must reformat the drive to use it a PC. Out of box, this drive is Mac formatted. *Hard Drive speed and cache size could be better. *Disk size is relatively small considering how large the competing drives are. *Extremely flimsy plastic bumper around the drive. It looks rugged and tough from the photos, but trust me, you could slip this piece of junk off without realizing it. *The whole "rugged" aspect of the drive is false advertisement. I thought it would be of a much tougher build quality. I still put this drive in a case. Bottom line: This is an average external hard drive that is very portable, and Mac oriented. As far as bang for the buck is concerned, the price is increasingly being dropped over time, which will make this a decent purchase. I feel you could still spend your cash more wisely on a competing portable hard drive as they lack a few of the larger Cons. 3 Today Great Product! This is a great solution for those with laptop computers. It comes with firewire 400, firewire 800, and USB connections. I use the firewire 800, and this drive is very fast. Small, durable, reliable. Not to mention it gets powered by your computer. I highly recommend it! 5 Today Bad initial experience The star rating reflects the early experience with this drive. On opening the box, the rubber covering is much thinner than implied from the promotional claims. The orange is as bad as it could be. Installation was not plug-and-play; the device could not be read by my Vista Dell XPS. The provided hardcopy documentation gives no help. The supplied disk is also no help; the files require Acrobat 5 (the current version is 8 (I have no desire to load old software applications). [The disk has an application that seems to be specifically for Windows98 (another very old program - I'd move this to the web site and just add documentation that it can be acquired if needed)]. I did finally find good documentation online at the LaCie site, which indicated that I needed to reformat my disk, and the supplied instructions (with screen shots) were helpful. As one reviewer mentioned, the device gets very, very warm (it will get quite warm just during the reformat process.) I am able to run the device with just one USB cable; however, the firewire cables do not work with my machine, for which I paid more for this device so that I could have the firewire capability. So in summary, the disk works, but the start up experience was very disappointing and the padding is not as good as the advertising infers. The firewire capability is an extra expense that is not working for me; once again, better promotional detail could have helped me to avoid this expense and disappointment. 2 Today Good, but not so good When it worked, performance was outstanding. When it broke, I was left high and dry by LaCie. The machine was out of warranty, so repair by the Company was refused. As luck would have it, the device gave up the ghost two days after I retired and I had not had time to back-up to my home computer. In the meantime, the back-up on my previous work PC had been re-formatted. Data recovery from LaCie was also not not an option, however, their recommended source for data retrieval started at $500, minimum. LaCie was was nice enough to offer another device at a reduced price:>(.....(Thanks for the great deal but no thanks).
