| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Not working with Vista! in general the device is really good, the main problem is that many time sit just won't print, due to configuration problems with Vista os. | 3 | Today | Nortorious Brother MFC Error 41 (or equiv) Fatal Failures ...I currently have a MFC-3420C. It had it's 3rd and fatal Error 41 failure April 4, 2008. The first two were fixed by Brother warranty. But, this fatal error is out of warranty. The local repair facility wants $120 to fix it.
...I write this review because I have read many dozens of reviews about the Error 41 (or equiv) and this fatal failure is common to many of Bothers MFC ink-jet printers, including the 38XX models. It usually takes about 6 months or so for the failure to occur.
...One would hope that Brother finally fixed the flaw and that it does NOT apply to the MFC-5460cn. I really liked the 3420. It never gave me any problems except for the Fatal Error 41s; which, of course, is not too good and there are a jillion previous Brother MFC ink-jet owners who really hate Brother! | 3 | Today | not great but has features had caller id feature but only the first few data characters are displayed- that means the name and not the phone number are actually seen on the top display line. Can print out the numbers as a list from memory but not useful after you've picked up the call. Can fax, copy, network print, and scan from pc on network so is multifunctional. Like how there are separate ink cartridges for 4 colors so you can replace only the empty ones. small and compact and paper tray does not stick out. print from flash card is useful but can't find some pictures depending on how your camera set up the directory. hard to turn on/off because button doesn't work all the time and not energy star compliant. cables snake through casing is awkward. Takes a while to prepare before it spits out the pages. | 3 | Today | Dissapointed Poor quality printing, and blurry photo printing. Brother sent me a new unit, which was nice, but new one was no better. I really want my money back, but somehow I don't think Brother is going to fork it over. | 1 | Today | Fair priced option for a networked home I still don't understand those so called "product managers". With Apple and Microsoft moving towards a "digitally connected home" I was shocked to discover that networked home focused AIO are still rare. Most of the available options are still to expensive and targeting small offices.
My choice was kind of a challenge, my AIO had to offer:
- Networked scanner without need of any software installation on workstations;
- Linux compatible;
- Fair print quality;
- Low price;
Some of my daily use computers are owned by my employer, something that prevents me from having tones of software installed on the computer. Not that I cannot explain that to the company, but, wouldn't it be better if I don't need to explain?
After searching for a while I found this MFC for a good price on a local store (sorry amazon, but you don't ship that overseas! 8D ).
I'm kind of a techie type but install was extremely easy: Just follow the instructions and the system will work (XP wise). Print quality is decent, some sites will say that the quality is poor but I found no base to support this claim. I've printed a self made test page and even Pt 6 times new roman characters are clear.
Scan is fair and if you are not expecting the best scanner in the planet and a perfectly aligned ADF. Have in mind this equipment is CHEAP and you won't be that disappointed.
I do most of my scanning using only the firmware. Just insert a compact flash card (i had some old ones at my photo bag) and you have a FTP enabled network scanner, perfect for your geek network setup.
Speed is good, suitable for normal home operations, and even for a small office. I've seen people complaining about paper feed/jam. I'm currently using plain 80gsm paper. No issues so far. Did some feed tests with DL envelopes (110x220mm). No problems as well.
Overall a good choice.
Pros:
- Simple network setup;
- 100% network enabled system.
- Scan to PDF direct on memory card or FTP over the network;
- Cheap
Cons:
- It isn't that slow but it could be faster;
- Plain paper can get pretty soaked with ink;
- Standalone scanner feature could have a higher range of resolutions. 200x200 dpi black and white produces fast but poor scans and the color 300dpi larger files for what could be only B&W PDF. | 5 | Today | Brother MFC5460 This is the first time I have purchased a Brother printer. We have been using HP printers in the past. All in all, the printer is sufficient for our needs. It is very easy to hook up as a network printer. We can now print from our two desktop computers and wirelessly from our laptop. The print quality is okay but I would say that the color printing needs improvement. It is not a real fast printer (especially the first page) but it's good enough for our needs. The fax machine also works well. I have our phone answering machine hooked up with it. I still need to learn how to make the fax-receiving feature work better. When it tries to receive, the phone answering machine starts it's message and then the 5460 starts to receive the fax. I'm hoping to get it to receive the fax without our phone answering machine starting up. | 4 | Today | Not Ready for Prime Time Software I have home network with 5 Windows XP Professional computers and one Intel Macbook running OS X version 10.4. I am a Professional Software Engineer and keep my home network well maintained. I wanted to add a low cost network printer to my network which was accessible from Windows and OS X. I am in the process of retiring all my Windows computers and transitioning all workstations to OS X.
After I received my Brother MFC-5460cn, I figured I would start testing on OS X because if I was going to have problems, it would probably be on the Mac. My plan was to test all functionality (print, scan, fax, copy) on both Windows and OS X with the printer configured as a network printer. I did not test the printer's USB capabilities.
I started by testing printing and scanning on OS X. After I installed the drivers, the first problem I had was that I could not launch the Brother Control Center Software. Brother breaks from the traditional OS X interface and places the icon to launch the control center software on the menu / task bar at the top of the screen. I did not expect the launch icon to be located at the top of the screen and it took me a while to find it. My bad.
After figuring out how to launch the software, I proceeded to test printing under OS X. Printing worked great and I did not find any issues. I tested printing multiple documents from OS X and Windows at the same time. I also tried scanning from OS X while the printer was printing. I did not test scanning from Windows while the printer was printing. I also tried reading the ink levels while printing, this also worked fine.
Next, I tested scanning from OS X. There are 2 ways to scan: Initiate a scan from the Brother Control Center application, or initiate a scan from the printer front panel. I started testing by initiating a scan from the Brother Control Center software. I tested scan to image, scan to email, and scan to file. I did not test scan to OCR. Scan to image scans a document, launches Preview (note: Preview is the Apple equivalent of Adobe Acrobat Reader), and places the image in Preview. Scan to file scans an image and places the image in a file on your Mac hard drive. Scan to email scans an image, launches Apple Mail, and places the image in a new email message. All this functionality worked great for the most part. But, during one of my tests, the Brother Control Center software hung and I had to kill it using Activity Monitor and restart it.
Next, I tested scanning by initiating a scan from the printer itself. To use this feature, I first used the Brother Control Software to register my Mac's computer name with the printer. This process registers the computer with the printer so the printer can scan an image and send it to the computer. Next, from the printer front panel, I selected scan, scan to file, and then selected my Mac computer name which I chose during the registration process above. The printer scanned an image and successfully placed it on the hard drive of my Mac. I also tested scan to email, and scan to image when initiating the scan from the printer front panel. Just like initiating a scan from the Brother Control Center (as described above), scan to file places a file on the computer hard drive, scan to image opened Preview and placed the image in Preview, and scan to email opened Apple mail and placed the image in a new email message. All of these tests were performed by initiating the scan from the printer. All of this functionality worked great and I was very surprised that I did not find any issues.
At this point, I was pretty happy and figure I had it nailed. I switched to the Windows XP Platform not expecting any problems with Windows. After all, it is the dominant OS and I figured Brother would put all their testing into Windows and not be very serious about testing OS X. Printing from Windows worked flawlessly as expected. As mentioned above, I tried printing from Windows and OS X while scanning and reading the ink levels, all at the same time. Everything worked great.
Scanning from Windows was another story. I immediately had problems getting the Brother Control Center Software to see the scanner. It was definitely NOT a communication issue because I could print from Windows, read the printer's ink levels, and run the printer configuration utility. But, I could not scan. Finally, after messing around for an hour, I was able to initiate a scan from the brother control center software. But, when I initiated a scan from the printer, it would never transmit the image to the Windows computer. I could never get scanning to work reliably from Windows. If I successfully scanned an image from Windows, then scanned an image from OS X, I would then have problems the next time I tried to scan from Windows. Note that I was running the latest printer firmware level (revision G), and running all the latest drivers which I downloaded from the Brother web site. I also tried scanning from an alternate Windows computer to rule out problems with one specific computer on my network. After a couple of hours of fighting the scanning process on Windows, I gave up and decided that this was not the printer for me. I am very surprised that this printer works better on OS X than Windows.
Conclusion:
The Brother Control Center Software works reasonably well on the OS X Tiger platform. But, I did not test the fax functionality because testing failed before I got to it. Scanning on the Windows platform is VERY problematic. I can not recommend this printer because it simply does not perform it's advertised functionality.
| 2 | Today | Fantastic all around I bought this 6 months ago for home use which includes some work and also printing out craft projects for the kids at home. Setup was fantastic on my Mac WiFi network... plugged right into the router and everything just works.
When I loaded it with cheap thin paper, it would jam, but as long as I use regular ink jet paper it works like a charm. I haven't replaced an ink cartridge yet, and this has never happened to me before.
I'd buy brother again. | 4 | Today | Excellent device, especially due to network connection This is a terrific all-in-one that does everything quickly and painlessly in our mixed Mac and Windows environment. Scanning is especially pleasant because it's fast as well as (to my untrained eye) accurate. Buyers also may not fully appreciate how useful it will be to have a *network* connected printer, which means anybody's computer can print to it (or get a scan from it) via wifi (the printer connects by cable but your computer can be networked wirelessly). Once you have this function in a multi-computer household or office you won't want to live without it. | 5 | Today | Picky, picky, picky about paper! If you want a straight-forward printer... this is a pretty good printer.
If you want to scan, it's marginal
If you want to print envelopes it is absolutely terrible, awful - don't waste your time.
If you want to print on any paper other than regular ink-jet flat average weight paper, get another printer. This printer smears every print job on any other type of paper.
Online support/FAQ is terrible. | 2 | Today |
