In August 2007, our old DVD/VCR combo quit about the same time I bought an HDTV. I looked into upconverting players and discovered this one. The first player would not work on the HDMI cable (deduct one star). The regular VHS output and component outputs worked fine. I called Amazon who immediately shipped another player. This player has worked great ever since then.
The upconverter with an HDMI cable is a noticeable improvement over the regular DVD player with component cables. I definitely recommend this player to anyone with a high-def TV.

I have a Samsung 1080 HDTV. I bought this player because I thought I could use the same remote and an HDMI cable to merge the movie-watching experience. Unfortunately, the DVD player does not support HDMI in DD 5.1. This means that in order to get sound with HDMI video and DD, you have to have an optical output to a DD receiver/speaker system. Even at that point, the HDMI sound will only play from the DVD player to DD speakers. Also, the DVD/VCR conversion is not the best on the TV because the VCR can't play on the HDMI channel and has to have the feed through the AVI cables on a different source channel. This means that you have to use the TV remote, switch the source and audio, then go to the DVD/VCR remote, switch to VCR on that remote and use it to play. Forget consolidating remotes. Better yet, if you've got a Samsung TV, the two remotes look the same with similar buttons that have very different functions. Overall, the HDMI video signal is good. It has some trouble playing movies with poor quality and movies with light scratching (such as Blockbuster/Netflix rentals), but I guess that is the trade-off for a better signal from an upconvert. | 3 | Today | Hook-up difficult but works as advertised.
I don't understand the issues you're all having with this combo unit. It works perfectly for me. Records DVDs from VHS, from Cable and from TiVo HD. Plays DVDs, CDs, Mp3s and VHS. With an HDTV, a TiVo-HD and a Surround-Sound Receiver hook-up was FAR from simple. But when I untied myself, everything works great. A quick note to the reviewer who could not record: make sure you "finish" the DVD if you want to watch it on any other player. I guess if I had to complain, it's just that the on-screen interface is just plain ugly and non-intuitive; especially when playing a music CD. | 4 | Today | Not built to last
This is the first of this type device that didn't last but just over a year. Very poor return on investment. The DVD would usually kick it out with message "cannot play disc, please remove." So I bought this to give the Playstation 2 a rest from playing DVDs but at least that always played them. I would not recommend this to anyone if you want one that lasts and plays DVDs for you. Maybe I happened to get a "lemon", folks, but my unit was JUNK! Brand-new unit --- right outta the box as it was shipped to me from Sears --- yet it damaged (scratched and creased) the one tape I loaded into it, it balked (ground and squealed, scratched and creased the tape) wherever there was a slightly worn/damaged section of tape, whereas other VCRs sailed right on through those spots, no problem. And it didn't automatically reverse at the end of the tape, either --- it just sat there and ground and ground till it finally shut off, and then it wouldn't do a thing (rewind, fast-forward, play, etc.) till I actually ejected the cassette (and I saw that the end of the tape had been scratched and creased by the machine while it was sitting there grinding instead of automatically reversing and rewinding as it was supposed to) and then re-inserted it. I was actually afraid to try any more tapes in it for fear it would damage them, too! I took the unit back to Sears the next day. | 1 | Today | Poor Performace
I purchased this unit to go along with a Samsung 46 inch 1080 LCD, for several reasons. 1 was to get the best performace Samsung recommened it for upconverting dvds, but the most important reason was that they claimed that the remote was completely compatable for the tv and dvd/vcr, totally not true the dvd player remote works with nothing on the tv except for volume, and the tv remote barely works with the most basic dvd functions. Keep in mind that both units were purchased at the same time and were created by Samsung. The worst part is that the dvd player skips and the movie freezes approxmately every 15 to 30 seconds on alot of movies, yet these movies work fine on all other dvd players. | 2 | Today | Samsung DVD-VCR Combo
For the price ,I recommend it. Great little product. I sure wish America could still build em like this for this price. At this point I could start talking about lawyers and unions but lets stick to this product. America can't build em, and Samsung can. They make a great flat panel tv also. Was helping a friend update his home theater system over the weekend. His older plasma supports 720p and 1080i but only has AV and component inputs, no HDMI. He had an older DVD player and VCR so was only using AV inputs, but he did have a surround sound receiver & speakers (yeah he hooked it up by himself and didn't understand you don't get HD or surround sound via the older AV connections). We found the V9700 and it sounded perfect as an inexpensive upgrade for his system.
Some specs on the V9700.
-DVD player (only, will not record DVD's) upconverts DVD's to 480p, 720p or 1080i.
-AV, component and HDMI video outputs.
-Has both digital optical and digital coaxial audio outputs for 5.1 sound, as well as the older white/red stereo outputs.
-Does not have a TV tuner, can only record VHS via line-in inputs.
The V9700 hooked up easily but quickly found out some unpleasant aspects to this unit.
-Component outputs will only upconvert to 480p, not 720p or 1080i. The latter two are only done via HDMI. So it was useless for him since his TV doesn't have HDMI inputs.
-VCR output is only via the AV lines, not via HDMI or component outputs (or digital audio outputs), so you will have to use a standard AV yellow/red/white cable to watch VCR.
My complaint with it is there is no reason why they can't upconvert the DVD signal to the component outputs. My cable TV box outputs 1080i via component and it looks great. I guess I am a little mad on this negative feature as it was a fight to get his TV off the wall mount to hook up the component cables!
Also be forewarned that the default digital audio output is set to PCM (found on the DVD setup screen). It needs to be set to bitstream to get 5.1 sound. Seems kinda silly they would do this, as if you are using the digital audio outputs then you probably have a system that supports 5.1 sound!
Other than that the unit worked fine, it played DVD's and video tapes without any issues.

After installing this player, I couldn't wait to uninstall it and return it. The picture quality (DVD & VHS) was horrendous! I used a quality HDMI cable to my new Sony LCD. The whole unit, including the remote felt like it was made of cardboard. WORST PRODUCT I EVER BOUGHT! I subsequently got a Sony RDR VX55 Unit. Great DVD picture and the VCR picture was acceptable (Don't expect HD from the VCR).
Another lesson in "You get what you pay for".

Works just fine for my purposes: playing DVDs and VHSs on an older non-HD TV via the standard RCA plugs. It is tunerless, so you can't record from broadcast. I was a bit concerned about quality of these devices from reading the reviews--there are plenty of bad ratings for ALL products of this type, even when accounting for the fact that unhappy consumers are more likely to post reviews. My last one (a Sylvania) lasted two years before its early demise, so I am working on the assumption that these things are basically junk, regardless of the brand, so you shouldn't pay too much for them. With such low expectations, I am perfectly happy with it... so far!! | 5 | Today |
