I bought this DVD-R for two reasons. The first reason was to add a DVD Recorder to my entertainment system to be able to archive things that I wanted to keep longer from my DVR, and the second reason was to add DiVX playback functionality to my entertainment system.
This unit does both of these things very well.
I must admit that I attempted to burn an SD copy of a Blu-ray movie by utilizing the analog (composite) outputs on the Blu-ray to no avail. As soon as the Blu-ray became the active source feed the DVD recorder stopped recording. If you changed the input source to, say, the cable box the DVD recorder would automatically continue recording. My point is just that if you are hoping to copy an SD back-up of your Blu-ray discs it probably won't work due to a very high level of copy-protection.
One other thing that might be considered a "con" is that the menu system is a bit convoluted. Naming a disc after you've recorded it, but before you've finalized it can be a bit tricky since you only have a remote control to do it with.
Bottom line is that if I still needed to buy a DVD recorder and a DiVX player I would definitely buy this unit again. I paid $130 for mine and I probably wouldn't pay much more than that, though... certainly not above $150.

the toshiba d-r550 ruined 6 discs in less than 30 days by making them unrecordable. it also made clunking sounds recording and playing back recorded discs. this problem also occurred in their analog dvd recorder. | 1 | Today | recorder works great
recorder works great programming is very easy except there is no TV program guide bummer I am using memorex +RW and they work great. I record the program and put the dvd straight into my computer and copy it then put it back into the recorder and erase it I'v done that 50 times with the same dvd +RW | 4 | Today | Great product !!!
I've been using the product for about 2 months now and couldn't be happier. Over the air digital stations were picked up no problem by the the digital tuner and have been kept in memory. Picture quality is really good, plays all my divx and upconverts to really good quality.
the only thing i don't like is the design and look of the remote control. It looks like a remote from the 80s and sometimes it's kind of hard to see what button you're pressing.

This player recorder was easy to hook up (hdmi) plays divx recordings great while it upconverts to 1080p.I love this productand the low price.

I don't have HD cable yet, so I can't comment on the digital tuner, but everything else works great.
The upconverting of regular DVDs is astounding. It's better than the movie theater. I have a Dell Projector and I can stand 2 feet away from the screen and the picture is still clear on DVD playback. And that's on a 10' diagonal picture. (Last night I was reading license plate numbers from the DVD of Little Miss Sunshine. Awesome.
I have no trouble recording anything from regular (not HD) cable and some of the channels (ESPN and FOX Sports, in particular) are just as good as the plasma they have at my health club. Plus, did I mention that I have a 10' diagonal picture?? (much bigger than the 42" plasmas they have at the club!) | 5 | Today |
