It worked okay for several years, although it became slower with time. One day it just refused to boot. I was lucky to be able to connect it peripherally to my computer at work and recover my data. But it is worrisome to have your drive just fail suddenly. Admittedly, this happened after 5 years of service, so it might be within the expected life span of a hard drive. 2 818 days ago Think about the future This drive kept me happy for four years. Yesterday, while the computer wasn't being used, I came home to find the blue screen of death; corrupt partition table. Attempted to repair it, only to reboot to the ominous "click click click" referenced at several places that offer to retrieve your data for $850 or so. I'm happy I make backups. (The drive can not be repaired - it's toast. Only physical repair will allow retrieval of the data.) <br /> <br />Four years may seem like a long time, but catastrophic failures like this seem common with these drives at around this age point, and they make saving a few bucks on the front end less than worthwhile. <br /> <br />This is the second Western Digital drive I've had fail on me. (The first one came installed in an IBM laptop.) Maybe I keep my computers too long. Maybe I should have drawn a conclusion from the first one. I've certainly drawn it now. 2 818 days ago Pretty good performance, very reliable I have both this drive and its big brother, the WD400JB. Previously, I've had a 20GB (WD200BB) from the same family. I've always experienced good performance from this family of drives and the noise was moderate. (Most systems sold will have CPU and case fans that are louder than this drive.) All the Western Digital drives I've had in this line have been very reliable, which explains why until very recently WD offered a 3 year warranty period on them. 4 818 days ago 2-3 years old and still works great This hard drive has no real reliability issues whatsoever as of yet, and I have had it for at least 2 years, maybe even closer to 3. I would say that the typical lifespan of a hard drive is 5-6 years, but it might be even longer than that. In other words, by the time you need a new one, they will have capacity in the range of 1-2 TB and you will likely want to get an entirely new system (author recommends learning how to build your own if you haven't already) to put it in. 5 818 days ago Noisy and Not so Reliable This HardDrive came with my Dell PC. Both were noisy and the last one crashed.
