Mr. Coffee Cheaply made pitchers
Owned Four Diffrent Styles. All Of them Worked ok But!!! The Pitchers Cracked, All Of Them!!!!My last New Mr. coffee Pitchers Lasted 3 Months and cracked (tea went all over the counter and floor) If you just make tea once in a while It may be ok But i make 3 Pitcher's a day With three tea makers sitting in the kithen on a old compter desk. The Hamilton Beach Has lasted 5 Years With Only one pitcher,It works good I'm ordering 2 more to replace the 2 mr coffee Because all my pitchers Cracked. I know Most people don't drink That Much,But I do.

Doesn't compare to the Hamilton Beach makers
First, physical weaknesses: The pitchers crack and warp slowly but steadily, so won't last forever. You can replace them for about ten bucks, but with shipping that's half the cost of an entirely new unit. And you can't put them in the dishwasher, so you'll probably want at least several up front anyway, so that you can clean them.

Second, cleaning problems. Unlke the Hamilton Beach tea makers, the bags here go in the brewing housing, which has to be removed and cleaned separately from the pitcher. And if you forget to do that, you'll have yucky (even moldy) tea bags the next time you go to make tea, even if that's within two days.

Hamilton Beach instead keeps the bags' brewing area inside the pitcher itself, which you can refridgerate and prevent yuck and mold from occuring. Plus, the Mr Coffee station drips TEA on the counter as soon as you remove the pitcher, whereas the Hamilton Beach only drips WATER since the tea process is all contained in the pitcher itself.

Further, the Mr Coffee series requires that the pitcher get very close to the brew housing station, with the tea just BARELY getting into the spout, or else you'll get tea dripped on the counter WHILE brewing. That messiness increases as the pitcher begins to warp and crack. Hamilton Beach bests that both by including a pull-out tray that HOLDS the pitcher in the correct position, and by having the tea drip directly to the center of the pitcher rather than milimeters from the edge of the spout.

Above all, the Hamilton Beach series simply makes better tea. It includes a dial that allows you to make weak, medium, or strong tea, and that's all automated. The Mr Coffee series has no such setting, but requires you to "close" the brewing area for a period and then turn a dial to "open" before it starts putting tea in the pitcher. That manual step both slows down the tea production, and risks making quite the mess if you forget to go back and open the dial. <b

7 yrs and counting...
I LOVE IT, thats all I can really say, we use ours daily and it has lasted 7 yrs. I bought it when I was breastfeeding my 7 yr old. I would always crave ice tea!
We still have BOTH of the original pitchers without a crack or many scratches through daily ice tea making and in and out of the dishwasher! Are people putting ice in them BEFORE letting the hot tea hit the pitcher?? You have to put the ice in so the hot water wont just fill the pitcher! I always use 2 family size Lipton tea bags and one Earl Grey small bag, it makes the BEST TEA! Everyone loves it! I recommend this FOR everyone needing to save some calories or who just love Ice Tea!

Compare newer models carefully!
I had the old one with the orange top. That one has a top basket to hold the tea bags which incorporates a side lever to plug the bottom drain hole, and an overflow channel so just the last couple of cups steep the tea until you pull the lever to release them. The new one with the blue basket has done away with that lever (I'm guessing to cut costs) and just put a little bit smaller hole at the bottom. They also tell you to use a coffee filter in the basket in addition to the teabags themselves, which after all are little paper filters. This is probably to slow down the run-out of the tea to help it steep it a little bit longer. My favorite combination of bags is one bag or Celestial Seasons Red Zinger, one Lipton Mango, and two Red Rose decaf's. In the old one I would let this combination of tea steep for maybe 10 minutes, and it came out perfectly. Using the same bags with the new one makes *really* tasteless, watery tea.

I just found a new model that makes 3 quarts and has a dial on the front for what they call "brew strength". This is a decided advantage over the other revised model. Also, you get a quart more of tea per cycle. You pour the water directly into the unit, where there is a window on the front with markings for 1, 2 and 3 quarts. The container has markings for how much ice to use for 1, 2 and 3 quarts. This is a better design, IMHO. Also, the pitchers are shorter, so fit in more places in your fridge, and the handles don't attach at the pitcher bottom, so you can nest them for storage. This is a big advantage over the old style. The new one comes with 2 pitchers. You can turn them both upside-down over the base unit to save even more storage space.

My recomendation: don't buy the newer 2 quart blue basket model. Hold out for the 3 quart model. And here's the kicker- I found mine at Wal-Mart for $2.00 less than Target was selling the 2 quart model!

Once you get into the habit of drinking i

I wanted to like this machine but...
I love tea and I hate making it the old-fashioned way, so I really wanted to like this machine. I wanted something quick, easy, AND good. I read the reviews, and for the most part, they were glowing, so I expected to like it. However, I just didn't. First, the tea was bitter, unlike tea I make with boiling water and a few minutes' steeping. Second, you have to use six to seven tea bags to make one pitcher of tea. I first tried it with the recommended 8 tea bags, and it was way too strong/bitter. I then tried it with 4 tea bags and it was way too weak. With six or seven, it's about the way it's supposed to be, except it still had a bitter aftertaste.

I even made two pitchers of tea, one with Mr. Coffee and one with a pot of boiling water and tasted them side by side, just in case I was subconsiously against this machine! But it was as before--Mr. Coffee, bitter. Regular way, smooth.

Also, with the traditional method, you only need two or three tea bags, not seven. Plus, there's no bitterness at all. I like relatively expensive teas (Republic of Tea), and throwing six or seven of those tea bags in there for just one pitcher of tea seems more than wasteful. If the tea had been good, however, I may have overlooked this. But it simply wasn't. Others may love this machine, but, if you'll pardon the pun, it's just not my cup of tea. I'm returning the machine and I'll continue to make tea the old-fashioned way.

Forgot something between steps 1 and 2
This item is basically a coffee maker, but with a different outer shell for making iced tea. Now, this product IS very nice. It makes great iced tea, and the advantage is that if you want, you can add things to your iced tea, or skip the paper filter insert if you're using a normal tea bag (since it's already covered in paper). However, they forgot to mention anywhere in the manual, especially between steps one and two on "To Brew Iced Tea" that the water reservoire can only take about 1.5 quarts of water at a time, meaning that if you want to brew a 3 quart pitcher of iced tea, you must fill and turn on the iced tea maker two to three times to make one full 3 quart pitcher, much less that it's very annoying to try to take off the steeping basket and lid when they are hot. This can make brewing iced tea a 2 hour experiment (if you're the kind of person to leave it sitting brewing while you are cleaning your house. This item could be greatly improved (albeit at a higher cost to consumers) by doing the following: 1. Increase reservoire size to 3.25 quarts, so that 3 quarts of water fits comfortably in the reservoire for 3 quarts at a time. 2. Adding a refrigeration unit to it, or at least a passage-way for the tea to travel and cool off. It's not fun brewing scalding hot tea when you run out of ice cubes. However, this would probably mean that instead of an "iced tea" maker, this would become a "ready to drink tea" maker.

Fantastic Iced Tea Maker
I got this as a gift from my mother-in-law after an unfortunate accident where I burned myself trying to boil large quantities of water to brew iced-tea. It is so easy to use, and I drink a lot more non-carbonated beverages now that I have this at home. I get one for everyone's wedding/shower gift even if it's not on their registry!

really useful
It might seem stupid. Who needs help making tea? But this machine is really useful. I almost never made tea before, but now I have it all the time. Really.
