Construction quality below expected
I've bought one of the 12c platinum because I needed a calculator in my office. I don't do financial calculations, so probably I'll use the calculator only to make elemental arithmetics, but I like RPN and the programmable features.
Build quality is below expected: intro key responsiveness is different than other keys', the soft case finnish is bad and the support pieces are not well adjusted, so the calculator is slightly unstable.
With the tag price this machine has you expect to get a perfectly assembled piece.
Disappointed.

Advantages and disadvantages.
Many people wonder: Should I get the HP 12c Platinum or the old standby, the HP 12c gold. Personally, I'd recommend getting both. Like most things, each model has advantages and disadvantages, but both are still among the finest feats in engineering in terms of a calculator. Keep in mind there are two versions of the Platinum -- the original and the 2.0 version. The 2.0 version is much better, and you'll know you have it if it has backspace and undo [g] functions. It's finally a respectible "upgrade" to one of the best calculators ever made.

What about the 12c Platinum?
Advantages:
- Much, much faster than the gold. It crunches IRR calculations in a fraction of the time. You might even find yourself missing the "running" message that's so common with the gold HP 12c. You cannot overestimate the advantage of the increase in speed, especially with test taking.
- Backspace and undo key. Having a backspace key really is nice, especially if you work with many long numbers.
- More program memory. Unlike the gold, the Platinum can hold something like 999 lines of memory. The gold only holds 100 or so, which fills up pretty quickly. Some options pricing models, for instance, will consume all 100 lines.
- Color. Many younger people think the silver color looks "cooler" or more current. Personally, I like the gold -- looks retro or something. It's personal taste, though.

Disadvantages:
- Slightly slower "wake up" period. You have to hold the 'on' button about a half of a second longer for the Platinum calculator to turn on versus the gold. Not a big deal, but a little frustrating for gold users who have years of habit.
- Display font not quite as nice. The gold's display is really nice. The characters are well formed and the screen has a nice contrast to it. The Platinum's screen is a bit different, some might say more updated and similar to other modern HP calculators. It's still very clear, though. <b

HP 12C PLATINUM calculagator SIX TIMES FASTER than the Gold Standard
guys - if you are still planning on taking the CFA (or even if you're not) using an HP 12C calculator, i emphatically recommend popping down to J&R (price match to wal-mart.com will save you $5) and buying the new HP 12C Platinum for $79.99. It is a zillion times faster (well, 6X) than the regular one but otherwise works almost exactly the samely. for example: i ran the following calculation simultaneously on the both and used identical button pushes to achieve them, but the platinum was incredibly faster:

time in seconds
enter cmd Gold Platinum
360 n instant instant
6.625 g i instant instant
740000 PV instant instant
0 FV instant instant
running PMT 1.8 0.5
0 i
running i 16.8 2.7

other differences:
pros:
faster (holy cow is it faster!!!!)
has backspace key (works okay, not super useful tho)
has undo command (this is real easy to use and comes in handy once in a while)
has algebraic entry mode (not just RPN) and parenthesis (both useless if you ask me)
has spot to scratch in your name on the back (cute)
comes with a nice hard leather protective holster (cheap quality though)

cons:
display doesn't blink with each key press to acknowledge entry - this stinks and is actually a very big deal!
screen doesn't look as nice (they used a standard calculator LCD instead of the awesome stylish one they used to use - actually the new one's screen looks terrible when you put it right next to the gold one - the gold had a GREAT screen and great font that was really easy to read and looked super classy. i will miss it very much.)
feels & looks a little more cheaply made
keys labels are painted on rather than moulded into the plastic - looks like they won't last through years of use
keys don't click as solidly. they're fine and you know when they've been pressed (which is tthe most important th

The speed in incredible, and for some exams you need any time you can get.

I have an even better calculation tested between my old 12c and the new one:

9.5 PMT
105.85 PV
1.012000 ENTER
1.012020 f YTM

about 3 seconds on platinum
about 20 seconds on old

'nuff said

I CAN ADD A 30 page Platinum Supplement to my book if you like
On my Professional Real Estate Problem Solving Using the HP-12C, as I am selling it through amazon's "Marketplace" (see the webpage on my book) I can add a 30 page, GBC bound, HP-12C Platinum Suppmenent if you like. (A) The Supplement simply shows all the programs in my HP-12C book in the exact format as they will apear in a HP-12C Platinum. (B) If the book is ordered through the Marketplace--the orders are sent directly to me by amazon--I'll e-mail/ask you when I get the order if you want the Supplement enclosed with the book. If so, I will enclose the 30 page supplement, no charge. In any event I attach a 2 page HP-12C Platinum Supplement to my HP-12C Book; the 2 page Supplement makes it easy to get over the small hurtle one faces when converting a program from HP-12C format to HP-12C Platinum "format". It is really no problem one way or the other: It is quite easy.
In any event my HP-12C real estate book is Totally Compatible with the HP-12C "Platinum" calculator, and any questions you may have you can contact me and I'll get the question/problem resolved. This is all part of the nc support that I include with my books (actually the books are Labors of Love!).
John A. Tirone

Good and light with all the bells
I used to have the Business Consultant II. The Financial calculator does almost the same things, but it fits more easily in your pocket. I miss the larger screen on the BCII, but the Financial's quick and easy access to formulas are very practical once you get used to them. Of course, the calculator is of top quality.

Great Product!
This is a very good calculator. Would recommend it even for the beginner! Ease of use and quick to learn it. Just my humble opinion.

One of the last of an almost extinct species
I've started doing more finance stuff recently and went looking for a good time-value-of-money calculator. I was pleasantly surprised to find the HP12C was still available. I've been using HP calculators for decades (HP-45, HP-15 and now an HP-32SII) because of their great feel and long-lasting quality. However, it's also true that the HP12C is probably the last relic of the great HP calculator legacy. It has 'Made In China' stamped on the rear, but the keyboard feel seems much like my dear departed 15C. Hopefully it will have the same long-term durability.

Why do I recommend this calculator?

*) RPN. In my world, the purpose of a calculator is to solve fairly straightforward math exercises quickly. If you're a college student and need speed and pictures and parenthesis, buy a graphing calculator. If you're solving Black-Scholl's option equations, fire up Excel or something on your desktop computer. But for straightforward punch-it-in calculator work, nothing beats RPN entry.

*) Fit and Finish. The keys have good tactile feedback. The display blinks on every entry. You just *know* you've entered the data correctly. The purpose of a calculator is quick, accurate answers at your fingertips. If you don't care about this, don't waste money on this calculator (or any high-end TI or Casio). Buy a $5 Walmart calculator.

*) Straightforward financial calculations. Sure, I could write a program for my HP 32SII to do financial calculations. But why, when I can just key in the data directly to the HP12C, push dedicated financial keys, and get immediate answers. This calculator has most of the financial functions you need in a calculator (amortization, depreciation, NPV, date functions, etc.) along with the basic complement of standard calculator functions (ln, mean, standard deviation, factorial, etc). The complexity level is about right for a calculator. It doesn't take a computer science degree to operate it like the graphing

The Sherman Tank of Calculators
The HP-12c is the benchmark of calculators.

Whether you're a student or business professional, the HP-12c should be the "standard issue" calculator. If you're neither a business professional or college-level (or above) student, a $6 calculator from the bin should serve you properly.

Others, even HP, have tried to outdo the 12c. Not even close.

When it comes to the functionality of the 12c, nothing can match it.

Everything about the 12c clobbers all other competitors' products.

No other calculator combines all of these features and qualities (some might be better than the 12c in 1 or maybe 2 features, but no competitive product has all of these like the 12c):

-Screen is outstanding.

-Physical engineering (horizontal structure, rubber feet) is outstanding.

-Buttons are outstanding.

-Battery is SUPERB (it took SIX years of usage before I had to change the factory-issued batteries).

-12c could probably absorb the shock of an incoming missile.

-Functions. What other calculator has all of the TVM, statistics, programming features, etc. that the 12c has?

-Processing speed? Please, an extra 1 or 2 seconds for the 12c is no big deal. Besides, the ease of operations entry more than makes up for the amount of buttons you have to push on, say, the TI financial calculators. (see also RPN, below).

-Reverse notation (RPN): don't be intimidated. It's easy to learn and pick-up. When you have a string of related calculations, nothing beats RPN. I've been in meetings where multiple people were performing the same calculations and I was the only one with an RPN calculator. Guess who finished calculating first. And now guess why. Processing speed is less important when multiple operations are involved (see processing speed, above previous).

12c and 15c - Best calculators ever
I'm really a 15c user, absolutely saddened to find out that it is no longer produced. All the good things that are said about these wonderful machines are true.

One thing that seems to be missing from the comments is that these calculators are seemingly indestructible. I vividly remember a college classmate repeatedly throwing his backpack against walls. When you shook his HP it sounded like when you shake a box of Tic Tacs... yet it never failed him. (Mine's been running since '85)

Once you get used to RPN you'll wonder how you ever did calculations before. When in school (engineering) this was a fantastic way to do long calculations.

I have a mac and a pc in the office plus another mac and pc at home, other calculators and a Palm Pilot... but when I have to do some quick math my HP 15c is what I look for.

I'll keep trying to find a 15c but may cave and just get the 12c.
