One little secret about OS X is that all the cool looking stuff it does slows things to a crawl on machines in the 400-500 range. This surprised me because I had one drive with OS X and one with OS 9. OS 9 was very snappy on my G4/400 but OS X was spinning ball hell. <br /> <br />This upgrade made a dramatic improvement and for under $200 you get a machine that is at least capable of running GarageBand, handling big Photoshop files, etc. Its hard to guage the speed but I'd say everything's faster but nothing's instant. <br /> <br />The installation should be foolproof but due to unclear instructions, not quite. Here's the deal. Sonnet used to ship these boards without a heat sink. They provided directions for salvaging the Mac's existing heat sink and reusing it. Apparently, not all Mac users are up on their thermodynamics and they failed to properly re-mount the heat sink causing the card to fail. <br /> <br />The good news is, the card I received had both a heat sink and a fan. The bad news is that the instructions show the older setup with detailed instructions as to how to swap out the heat sink. Also incorrect is the mention that you need a medium Phillips screwdriver. You need a fairly small Phillips because the screwdriver has to pass through holes drilled in the included heat sink and an "average" Phillips screwdriver will be too fat. <br /> <br />Finally, with most machines you'll need to download a firmware update so your Mac will recognize the new card. But since you do this before you install the card, you're left wondering what will happen when you have the new firmware but have yet to install the new card. Will the machine restart? (Yes) Do you need to swap proccesors before restarting? (No). <br /> <br />The bottom line is, this is a nice upgrade and simple to accomplish. But decent instructions would take a lot of the anxiety out of it. 4 818 days ago A must-have if your CPU is under 600MHz I have a 400MHz G4 that was tolerable until I upgrade to OS X 10.3. Even though I have 1GB of RAM, everything was just really slow. Appliations would take forever to load, and most operations would stall for a couple seconds. <br /> <br />This CPU upgrade fixed all that. I would say that my computer is about twice as fast now. Not only that, but I had videos that wouldn't even play at all, and now they work fine. A definite improvement. <br /> <br />Considering how inexpensive this particular CPU upgrade is (1GHz is the bottom-of-the-line for G4 CPU upgrades), I consider it a must-have for anything with a CPU that's currently under 600MHz, especially if you're running OS X. <br /> <br />The one thing I can't tell you is whether you should spend the extra money to get one of the higher-end CPU upgrades. Besides the 1GHz model, Sonnet also offers 1.2GHz (ASIN B000083K9N), 1.4GHz (ASIN B0000AZJYC), and 1.7GHz (ASIN B0006ZM4ZI). You get less bang-for-the-buck the higher you go; however, the lower speeds may just not be fast enough for you. My only suggestion is to get a CPU that's more than twice as fast as what you have now. If your CPU is currently 800MHz, you're probably not going to notice a difference at 1GHz, so buying this model would be a waste of money. 5 818 days ago Almost as good as a new machine My G4 Sawtooth (year 2000) now flyes, the difference in speed is really big and the installation process took me less than 10 minutes, no problems, just plug and play! <br />This upgrade is the best investment that I have done to my Mac and for the price is a great deal. Since I installed the upgrade I keep just using it instead of my 2,4 ghz.
