My EBAY and talk radio buddy! First a disclaimer: I own the C.Crane "Super 909" and not the standard unit. <br /> <br />I use this radio far more than any radio I own. I have an office that's partially below ground and a very difficult AM reception area. I telecommute a lot and I listen to talk radio while I work, and this radio gets me through the day. <br /> <br />One neat feature is the variable sensitivity knob on the left side of the radio lets me turn the sensitivity down and rotate the radio in order to determine the exact direction a weak AM signal is coming from. This way I can position the radio for optimum reception. Once in position I turn the sensitivity back up again. <br /> <br />Here's one thing you might not have read about this radio in any other review: it's a great help with EBAY. <br /> <br />That's right, those three separate timers on this unit combined the military 24 hour clock allow me to look right at an auction end time (which is in 24 hour format), punch in a time about five minutes before that, and let the radio tell me when to get in front of my computer and get ready to win that auction. And, I can set up to three different timers at the same time. You don't need the "super" version to enjoy this feature. <br /> <br />(Yes, I know that's probably not what the designers of this radio had in mind.) <br /> <br />The downside is that the one thing this radio is supposed to excel in (especially the "super" version) it simply doesn't, at least not for me. <br /> <br />I once ran a simple wire out of a cheap analogue SW portable down here in the basement and got a lot of SW stations from overseas, like Japan and Tiawan, but this radio can't pick up what that cheap radio could in the very same location and with a better antenna setup. I don't get it. <br /> <br />Also, the volume is broken or somehow doesn't work in such a way as to allow me to turn the volume down very quiet. 20+ Years of SWL. This is the best radio I've owned. I was a little nervous about spending $200+ on a portable receiver. After having and using the ATS-909 for a full week I am 100% happy with it. My other (quality) receiver is a Grundig Satellit 800, that I had bought refurbished two years ago. The ATS-909 has much better sensitivity than my Grundig with a 50 foot long wire antenna at 15.000 Mhz where I just compared them. <br />The Grundig is better, with its built in whip antenna, but the ATS-909 comes in a respectable second there, in my book. <br />It also has the best sound I have ever heard from a radio this size. SSB sounds better than some HAM rigs I have listened to. <br /> <br />Mine came with an AC adapter and 23 foot, windup, long wire antenna. I use NiMh 2700 MhA rechargable batteries, so the adapter is not necessary for me. <br /> <br />Excellent portable SW/AM/FM receiver, I am happy! <br /> <br />Ken <br />	5	741 days ago
Sangean Ats-909 Big things come in small packages....I am very pleased with my purchase of this shortwave receiver. It is very easy to use and so many ways to tune in stations. The ssb mode is the best I have ever used and sound quality is excellant. Found out by using a stereo plug you can also hook up an antenna to boost mw and fm along with shortwave. Good Shortwave Receiver The Sangean ATS 909 is a good shortwave preformer eventhough it lacks synchronous detection which is offered with the Sony ICF-7600GR (which I also own). Reception with only the telescopic antenna is below satisfactory but when the radio is used in combination with the AC Adaptor and ANT-60 (wire antenna supplied with the radio) it becomes a very good preformer just as good as the Sony ICF-7600GR with excellent reception on shortwave. Stations from Europe and even Australia were received without any problem. The Sangean ATS 909 Single Sideband preformance is superior to that of the Sony ICF-7600GR. Air Traffic Control and Ham Radio signals were easily received and in very good quality. FM preformance is very good, much better than that of the Sony which tends to overload when having to deal with strong signals and the audio sound of the Sangean is superior to that of the Sony which is rather poor. The battery preformance of the Sangean ATS 909 could have been more efficient. It tends to run through batteries quicker than with other portables. The advantage though over the Sony ICF-7600GR, is that it comes with an AC Adaptor. With the Sony there is no AC adaptor provided. Sony does however have 6 volt AC adaptor on the market but it's not recomended for use with shortwave radios because the humming sound it creates. Overall the Sony ICF-7600GR is also a good preformer on shortwave and as said earlier it has synchronous detection which the Sangean ATS 909 lacks but eventhough the Sangean ATS 909 lacks synchronous detection my vote still goes to the Sangean ATS 909 because of the superior audio quality and superior Single Sideband reception.	4	741 days ago
Stable little SSB Rcvr in an awkward box Unit performed well , especially when hooked up to an outdoor antenna on SW. The Manual was not very helpful. But the ability to tune SSB and CW in 40 Hz steps via a knob make it all worth while. The organization of the ujnit into commercial and International SW bands was not useful to me since I was interested in Ham and Marine SSB bands. Using the Antenna Gain control (Pre-amp?) was very useful in cutting down background noise on SSB. Would have been nice to lable individual Memory Buttons on SW as you can on FM. Also the ability to control selectivity would have been nice. But hey, this is a general purpose, portable SW radio that can be easily packed and set up to keep tuned in from anywhere.
