| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Poor design I have been looking for a nice, large griddle for a long time in order to take the guesswork out of making pancakes (and to cook larger batches at a time.) A family member learned that I was looking for an electric griddle, so I was given this particular model (the Rival Fold n' Store) as a birthday gift.

First, let me tell you that I like to thoroughly research a product before I buy. I'm a firm believer in the old saying "buy cheap, buy twice." And, I'm very particular about my things and I'm very detail oriented. Ok, with that said, let's move on.

Out of the box, the first thing that I noticed about this unit is that the cooking plates are made of somewhat thin aluminum with a non-stick coating applied to the top. Thin = low thermal mass = they will heat and cool too quickly when food is applied.

The next thing I noticed is that there's a grease channel running around the entire perimeter of the cooking surface and a large seam (joint) where the two folding halves are joined in the center. What does this mean? Liquid foods, such as pancake batter or scrambled eggs will immediately flow toward this channel before they have a chance to stiffen up by cooking. And, the large seam down the center of the cooking surface means no pancakes can be cooked there!

Ok, so how well does this unit heat? I pulled out my non-contact infrared (IR) thermometer gun and took temperature samples after the unit had a chance to fully heat up (after two or three thermostat cycles.) With the thermostat(s) set to 350-degrees F., the cooking surface reached a whopping 460-degrees F.!! Ouch!! I watched as the griddle cooled and the thermostat clicked back on at exactly 350-degrees F. and, once again, proceeded to heat the surface back up to 460-degrees F. My suspicion is that because the heating element does not actually touch the cooking plates, and because the plates are so thin, the unit has to over-heat the plates so that when the cold | 1 | 771 days ago | good griddle very good product, the only flaw is to open or close you have to remove the grease trap, otherwise it's excellent | 4 | 771 days ago | Good, but not great We have had this griddle for over a year now. We bought it because it seemed like a great idea at the time. Folds up? Easy to use? Good features? All "yes", but with some qualifiers.

We bought it specifically for a trip to Colorado, where we made a large quantity of flapjacks for a family reunion. It was in addition to our old griddle, and in addition to the other griddles brought by other family members. The portability can't be beat, unless they made a better way to carry the drip pan. It worked, and still works great for flapjacks, French toast, fried eggs, and anything that doesn't drip grease.

The drip tray is easy to use, but can't be stowed in the folded position. It does not catch all of the grease from bacon, ground beef patties, or pork chops. I do not know how to remedy this.

I still like this griddle, but have to compensate for its flaws. I think it is a good value for those that want to save space and have portability, but don't have a lot of greasy food to cook. | 5 | 771 days ago | Rival Fold n' Store Griddle Great griddle, best feature is the fold n' store. Will easily fit in any cabinet, set up and fold up is extremely easy.
I'd purchase one again. | 5 | 771 days ago | Handy Gadget is a great buy This fold-up griddle is unbeleivably handy and useful. With a temperature control on each section of the griddle, I can cook items requiring different temperatures - all at the same time on the same grill. Then it folds up for compact storage. | 5 | 771 days ago |
