External Harddrive with auto software
This product was defective. The company, Iogear was very unhelpful. If there was a rating less than a star I would give it. I would give the company a rating lower than the product. Although the product is sold for Mac OS X the software will not work with it. Told the engineers are working on it ( the product has been out for two years). The harddrive itself was either preused or defective. Tiger, the direct seller was very nice, but I had to pay for shipping both ways, so would not order from them again.

Iogear's support department is terrible.
I bought this drive brand new from newegg.com. When I received the drive, it was partitioned into 5 seperate drives. It is entirely pointless for it to come like this from the factory. If anything, just confusing. I attempted to partition it back down to one, which in doing so, the drive got stuck & would not finish the partition. I shut it off, and when powered back up, only 1 disk image mounted. okay, i thought... to be safe, I ran a repair disk utility & evrything seemed to check out...until I needed to use it. I am using it for a music playback drive in Pro Tools. When I connected w/ Firewire, it was recognised, but the data transfer rate was, in fact, slower than a USB 1.1 connection. Thinking there was something wrong w/ the ports/housing, I sent the drive to iogear for repair. upon return, they had replaced the casing which houses the ports, but left the origional disk w/ my data inside. In addition, the case they replaced my brand new one with was scratched & worn to the point of where it never should have left the factory. And suprise suprise, the firewire ports were still slow as molasses. I had them send UPS over to pick it back up. When talking w/ the rep. on the phone, he stated "we will just replace it with a brand new one" well, aparently he meant just the drive inside, because when I got it back it still had the beat to hell casing. Amazingly, the drive works as it's supposed to. It was partitioned into 4 seperate drives when I received it this time, which I found to be quite odd, but at least it partitioned to one without complications this time. So now, almost two months later, I have a working hard drive that's ugly as sinn that I paid full price for. I have since emailed iogear about the issue, with no reply. I would highly recommend Acomdata's hard drive product line. They are smaller, more stylish, and actually work how they are supposed to. The downtime of the iogear was so long I ended up purchasing one & could not be h

Wonderful backup system
I purchased this drive about 4 months ago, after having researched many backup system drive/software combinations, and have no complaints. It is sleek, fast, quiet, and works flawlessly with Retrospect 6.5. With one touch of a button on the harddrive I can backup all my data files as a progressive backup (only copies over new files), or backup my entire OS. Moreover, I can select specifically from which folders I want to backup, and can even backup all data on my desktop. I haven't tried to reinstall the entire OS yet, as I luckily have not experienced any kind of problem that would force me to do so, so I can't comment on that. But being able to easily retrieve a file or folder I accidentally deleted...is priceless. The only grippes I have are: 1) Retrospect isn't the easiest backup software to navigate. However, it is a solid, well written program which functions excellently. (And be warned, tech support is only free with the first call. After that you have to pay. However, their manual is well written and easy to follow.) 2) The drive comes preformatted in numerous 32 gig partitions that one must reformat as NTFS for one large partition. Not a big deal, but just another thing in life that eats a person's time. CONCLUSION> This is a hghly recommended back up system. WARNING- for those searching for a backup system, in my opinion ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE 8.0 is awful- froze my WIN XP PRO OS on numerous occasions. Not tested well enough if you ask me.

Died within 3 hours of opening
I purchased this drive mainly because after rebate it seemed like a good value for a drive that supported USB2 and Firewire.
However soon after opening the box, I regretted my purchase.
First off, the drive is massive, easily 150% of the size of most other external drives, and given its shape and configuration it is not suitable for being placed horizontally. If that doesn't bother you, as soon as I plugged the drive in, I found that the drive came in 5 partitions, Each about 32GB. The only reason I could possibly think that you would want a drive that has been broken down into 32 gig chunks is if you are still running windows 95, In which case you are not using this drive, since win95 doesnt support USB or Firewire.
After finally removing all of the partitions and formatting for NTFS (It came formatted FAT32, but most are) I began copying files over to it, and within 3 hours of me opening the box, the Drive completely died. It would not turn on at all.

I promptly sent the drive back and bought a western digital, which caused me none of the above gripes.

Works well; meets expectations
I bought this hard drive for use with my laptop that I recent got for the start of college. I needed an external drive to supplement my laptop's 80GB drive, and I went with this Iogear hard drive mostly because of its low price. The added bonus is that it looks pretty slick.

Be careful about size, and make sure you realize that it'll be about eight inches high and two wide, if space is a big concern. It doesn't get too hot, and it works well, though I think the "Tri-Select" function is rather pointless, at least for storing media, which is what I use it for doing.

The only thing I didn't expect was that, when plugged into the computer, it will appear as five seperate drives, each 32GB (except for the last drive, which is only 22). So in reality, the capacity of this is only 150GB; a bit of false advertising.

Lastly, realize that this hard drive will need to be plugged in with its included AC adapter. It's been a good product thus far, and something I'd definitely invest in again.
