| Product Reviews from Amazon.com (Rating System 1 to 5) |
| 4 | 790 days ago | Not the only one with problems Looked like a good, inexpensive player, but in less than a year it died. It performed well until 9 months later it one day it refused to open the tray. Phillips said i could send it in and get it fixed for $40, but a brand new one only costs a few dollars more. Not worth it, don't buy it, others have had a similar problem. | 1 | 790 days ago | worst product to purchase I bought this item last month at CircuitCity.com, and realized immediately after the use, how big mistake I did, its not at all the product quality I expected from Phillips, its like worst, to list some of the worst qualities,
the remote does not work properly, if I want to rewind the picture, the rewind button does not work, i mean, if you click on it, it will forward the picture, and if you are lucky some times, it works fine.
and secondly, the rate of the speed is only 8x, which is the most disturbing thing, even some of cheaper brands, have more fast forward rate than this.

anyway, on overall, its the worst, and please dont buy | 1 | 790 days ago | A shallow and superficial review A lot of the other reviewers have focused on the technical aspect on this dvd player. I personally don't have much technical experience (I never bothered educating myself on the different outputs or even what progressive scan meant) so this review isn't going to focus on those elements. All I can really discuss are the more obvious aspects of simple play and appearance.

Appearance wise, this dvd player is quite attractive, setup was a snap, region coding wasn't an issue, and it played my divx recordings just fine. It has a very slim appearance and a conveniently sized display screen. When inactive, it even has a screensaver option. Not the colorful butterflies of some models, but I doubt anyone would let that be a deciding factor against it. The remote is small yet functional, but I didn't like how hard some of the buttons had to be depressed in order to activate. While this feature might be a good thing for those with children (who tend to slightly manhandle most buttons) I found it very inconvenient during late nights as I blearily tried switching it off.

Performance wise, my biggest complaint was that it made way too much noise. I bought this to replace my whisper quiet Panasonic (which fell victim to the infamous H02 Error) so this really started to get irritating fast. Everytime it played, I would hear the disc spinning throughout the movie. Also, the forward and backward search (helpful for skipping through the numerous intros on boxed sets) were impossibly slow and jumped rather than played through those scenes. Which meant that you had to not only shuffle through disjointed images that looked more like a slideshow, but you could never pinpoint the location of where you wanted to stop. As soon as you hit the stop button, or smash as it was in my case since the keys were so darn unresponsive, you'd never end up where you wanted to. The result being that I've now memorized the theme songs to several of my favorite t.v. sho | 2 | 790 days ago | The best price, Excellent Performance, and cool looking This was by far the best electronic purchase I have made in a while. I originally got this player because it was on sale, and I have had good luck with Philips in the past. I hoped that this would be a good middle of the road model. This player blew me away with its performance. Although the new upconversion models are out now, if you have a standard definition television, why waste the money on one. If you have a High definition television that can handle progressive scan, the 480p progressive scan quality is excellent, and had to seperate from higher definitions. Other available features on this model include the DivX capability for MP4 and other video files. This player doesn't flinch at all playing these files, a claim which some other divx player try to make. I have files from 6-7 years ago it plays. Also, this model has digital audio out as well as Optical audio out. The replacement model which philips put out for this model does not have the optical audio out, which is a huge deal if you want true DTS sound. This player delivers. It also has its own equilizer/sound settings for rock, concert hall, theatre etc, something i had not seen before on a player, although my last player is now 5 years old.

So If you want to make a solid purchase, this is the machine. If you prefer to buy your items at a retailer (not online), you may have to look around to find this player, many places have clearence it out in favor of the new models coming out. So don't be fooled into those new models, this one has more to offer. Thank goodness for amazon.com though, you can get this item offline, which if you need a player and can't find this one at the store, thank goodness for amazon. I have purchased many items from amazon, even electronics, with confidence. | 5 | 790 days ago | Works Great! I got mine from "My Cybershops" for about $36 refurbished by the Phillips factory. It looks and acts like a new machine. I had to put in the code to make it region free and that took about 30 seconds. Using component video the picture is fine. I've been enjoying PAL DVD's from UK with no problems. | 5 | 790 days ago | Disappointed by Poor Quality I did my research before buying this DVD player by reading reviews. I liked the relatively high ratings and Amazon.com description that promised it played NTSC, PAL and all different region's DVDs. However, I was very disappointed with it once I started using it and ended up giving it away to someone else. (In fairness, my player did not break or malfunction, which seemed to have happened to some users.)

Remote: very flimsy, buttons non-intuitive and very close together; because the remote's unlit, hard to use in a dark room

Playback: problems playing disks from other countries (my DVDs were not boot-legs); can only fast forward up to 8x speed, which is very irritating when you are watching a DVD without lots of chapters and want to go straight to a certain part
| 2 | 790 days ago | Almost region free I was disappointed when I first set it up as it is advertised as "region free" out of the box and when I inserted region 2 the message came up "wrong region". I went through all the menu's I could find, read the manual only to find it states region 1 or All region only!
Thank you Amazon and customers for these reviews as I took a look here and realised there may be more to do. You need to open the tray and enter "7,8,9,OK,0" on the remote (slowly on each button) and then close the tray. Hey presto, its region free. Don't forget the OK in the middle, some of the advice here does not include it.
Now why couldn't Northstar Elecronics who ship the box tell you this in the first place? It would save everyone time and effort.

Now it works fine and is an absolute bargain and in good condition. | 4 | 790 days ago | CODEC not supported How is it that I have just received a DVD from Region 4 (Australia, NZ etc) and I get this message despite the fact that other DVD's from that region are working fine, and I have already performed unlock for that purpose | 4 | 790 days ago | AWESOME! This is absolutely awesome! I've had the non region free model for almost 2 years now and this one for almost a year, they are both still working fine. Divx formats that wont even play on my computer will play on this just fine. It's awesome for slideshows, mpg's whatever. This unit ROCKS! Especially for the price! | 5 | 790 days ago | Excellent product, and I received it free! This is a great product, and you can get it, along with any other products on Amazon up to $500 Free! It plays any kind of DVD-R+R-RW+RW you can throw into it. The menu is simple to use , the LCD display is not as fancy as some of the other 80$+ dvd players, but then again, this is a $50 player. It does a great job at progressive scan with up to 8x fr and ff. I have bought this as a gift for a couple of my friends and they have loved it as much. | 5 | 777 days ago | Dead after 9 months Dont Buy This player was great until the dreaded flashing red power light appeared. Now its dead. | 1 | 777 days ago | great find We were looking for a multi region DVD player at a reasonable price. Although it does not state this is multi regional, just google it and you will find websites that give you the code to make it region free.
It is a great player. Looks good, works well, everything you could wish for in a DVD player plus ou can play any region.
Great value for money | 5 | 777 days ago |
