Etymotic Research ER 6i Isolator HeadphonesAbout Etymotic Reseach, Inc.Etymotic Research has spent over twenty years developing in-the-ear technology for auditory research, precision monitoring, and critical listening. ER earphones reduce noise naturally. They slide in your ears like earplugs to block out external noise, allowing you to hear every recorded detail. ER earphones provide the highest external noise isolation of all earphones and no batteries are required. High Accuracy SoundTrue high fidelity sound reproduction requires the reproduced sound to be as close as possible to the sound of a live performance. Isolator earphones are designed to match the acoustic response of the open ear.Exceptional Noise IsolationEtymotic earphones reduce environmental sound levels, allowing you to hear the full range of today's digital recordings without having to play them at unnaturally high and unsafe levels. Since you don't have to boost the volume to overcome external noise, ear overload distortion is minimized.

Great sound with correct eartip
When I first received these I was slightly disappointed at the lack of bass, although they were a big upgrade in clarity over my Sony MDR-EX51LP earphones. I contacted Etymotic, asked them to send me some sample eartips, received them for free in less than a week (in Thailand!), and found that the small eartips fit perfectly and the sound was vastly improved. Only Downside-- these are no good for the gym as they fit too well and make my ears pop when running. This is ok as these are a bit pricey and i dont want to get them sweaty. Still use sonys there.

Subway commuting, excellent customer service
I've owned a pair of these er6i's for the past 10 months. I've been very pleased- Great sound, excellent isolation. I dont get to work tired from the subway noise.

2 weeks ago, I noticed that the right channel was working intermittently - something was loose near the 1/8" plug end. I contacted etymotic, they had me send the phones back for a warranty repair. 5 days later, I had a brand new pair waiting for me in the mail. Confidence in their product? You bet!

Save your money
The Etymotics are nothing but high end. They are extremely clear and precise, however for someone who's just trying to enjoy music on an intimate level i feel they fall way short based on the price.
Pros:
very clear high end, very accurate
isolation is superb
comes with interchangeable tips and filters

Cons:
hardly any low/mid end sound,
sound isn't full and real sound, very flat
cord is very pewny, feels easily damageable
cost is quite high

I've tried both these and the shures and would have to say that all in all, the shures take the cake. They are much more bassy/full, rich sounding. Very enjoyable because it's much more like listening to the cd, rather than a pristine, empty or flat sound that you get with the ER's.

The shure's don't isolate as well and are not as comfortable, but they have a heavier cord, and sound quality makes up for the rest.

Fantastic sounding, cheaply built
These headphones sound great - at least compared to my $50 Sony in-ears. Crisp and clear, pronounced, though not too much bass and mids. Unfortunately the build quality is very disappointing... the cables resemble the cheap flimsy ones I got with my mono radio in 1980. They seem like they could break any time. The case is about the size of my iPod; don't ask me why. At $150 I'd expect a little more in terms of quality of the materials. The plug sticks out too far - my Sonys were flat, which made my MP3 player take up a lot less space.

Best bang for the buck
These were my first IEM's (In Ear Monitors) and I must say that I was really impressed with the sound quality. The size of them may probably scare people right off the bat, yes they are very tiny and the wires seem very fragile. But the build quality on them is solid.
The fit: this is difficult to comment on because obviously, everyone has their personal preference. I've read many people who suggest and like the foamies, saying they provide the best isolation and sound production. However for me, i perfer the large biflange (2-flange) eartips. When inserted properly, i get complete isolation and the eartips are stuffed deep into my ear canals providing the best bass possible. With the triflange eartips, the tips are a little small and hurt a bit when inserted deeply into your ear canals, and no proper seal so you hear a lack of bass.

So whenever people say the ER6i's lack bass, i personally think they are just not getting a proper seal. The bass on the ER6i's are not huge, but they are definately not NON existent.

The sound quality itself as many have said is very clear, there is no muddy sounds coming from these great headphones.

I've heard the Shure E4C's, and I'd say that the ER6i's are quite similar, just that the E4's bass is stronger, aside from that the sound quality is very similar. So instead of paying nearly $300, you can get the same sound for half the price.
