| Review | Rating | Last Updated | Great Game With A Few Shortcomings This game overall is an excellent action/shooter. I truly enjoyed the plot and gameplay of it. The controls are very customizable and easy to use. Though the plot is somewhat confusing, I think it has a great originality to it. The graphics are excellent as are the game physics and AI.

There are a few problems in the game in my opinion. The first is the environments. Though the graphics are excellent, there seems to be a lack of different environments you play in. Each level seems to be only a minor variation of the last. They all have an industrial feel to them, and though this isn't a huge drawback, I felt some variety of environment would be good. The second complaint I have is the cookie-cutter enemies you face. They are all variations of SWAT looking commandos.

Now to the best part of the game. It is very suspenseful. I find most suspense movies rather predictable and bland, yet while playing this game I've found myself wondering through the levels with my heart racing and muscles tensed. I'll even admit to having to turn on the lights while playing at night once or twice.

A note about the graphic content of the game. FEAR does deserve it's Mature rating from the ESRB, and is filled with violence and gore. | 4 | 801 days ago | Chilling... From reading reviews from some of the creator's, FEAR was going to be a horror/FPS game, but not just a horror game where you wait to jump out of your seat with hidden monsters and demons in closets, no...They wanted to give it a a chilling story about a girl that follows you around the game as you neutralize a threat that wiped out team instantly after a mysterious wave commences. The First Encounter Assault Recon Team (F.E.A.R.) is sent in. With the cool button to switch from a slow-motion combat back to normal, you fight through soldiers and other teams. That's not it though, along with the FPS perspective, this little girl pops up every now and then and whispers to you (another being follows too as he knew about her story) and you fall into illusions where you are taken through chilling slow-motion sequences where, little-by-little, you find out more about what happened to this girl...Make sure she doesn't touch you though as it will kill you. With the realistic and stunning visual effects and graphics, FEAR is a MUST if you want to experience intense action, chilling and suspenseful sequences, and extraordinary graphics. I give it five stars. | 5 | 801 days ago | Way Overhyped. I bought this game after trying the demo, thinking the demo was a sneak peek at what would be an even better final commercial product. What I didn't realize was that nearly everything in the commercial product was already seen in the demo. The same bland environments (3 total) The same enemy (nothing but guys in black body armor) No real in-game plot. No puzzles, no non-weapon equipment. Very little suspense. As soon as I saw a flashlight that needed recharging every 15 seconds, the lack of friendly fire (shoot at an ally and the bullets don't hit them), and gratuitous use of explicit foul language and blood, I knew what I was in for, because those are all things a company throws in when a game isn't well-rounded enough. The enemy AI and physical performance were interesting, but that's mainly all this game has to offer. And for a game that demands cutting edge hardware, the graphics still are bland, repetetive, and overall disinteresting. I wish I had waited for the Bargain Bin. | 2 | 801 days ago | Addictively Freaky FPS This is without a doubt a revolution in the FPS ("first person shooter" for those who don't know) games. As an unamed member of F.E.A.R., you're job is to hunt down and stop a renegade military leader and his army of mind controlled lackies in their reign of terror. Thats where the story begins (complete with the graphic sequence of the revolt by the bad guys) but it quickly "goes to hell" when you start hearing wierd "white noise" over your comm-link, hearing taunting voices, and seeing weird stuff like people disintegrating as they walk past you and (taking a page from japanese pop-horror) a mysterious girl in a red dress that appears and disappears without warning.

Some of the, what I consider, innovated new features provided in this game are the "hidden story", slow-mo, and realistic death physics. The "hidden story" is such that the vast bulk of exposition and nessecary parts needed to understand what the **** is going on is hidden throughout the game within laptops and voice-messages. Without actively searching for clues, the player will never know approximately 80% of what is happening and why. You can still finish the game without searching for clues, but you will be more confused than ever. Slow-mo takes a page from movies like _The_Matrix_ and _The_One_ in that, when in a pinch, all you need to do is hit "Slow-mo" and your character's hightent reflexes and agility enables you to move and react significantly faster than you opponents. You even see air streams bullets leave in their wake. The physics in this game are phenominal. If you're jaw doesn't drop from the blood splattering, it will when you make an enemy flip head over heels as you blast point blank at his leg with your shot gun or (my favorite surprise that I discovered) seeing you drop kick a fallen baddie and witness him fly head first into a concrete wall (with equally bloody results).
As you have already seen, this game is very graphic when it comes t | 5 | 801 days ago | OMG I bought this game at wal mart one day after it game out. I had never played this type of game before. I am a Sims 2 fan. Well I was really getting bored with my simmies so I thought hey I want this game. OMG I played at night all-alone and It scared me to death. I loved it. I was like into it so intense like and bam out comes that little girl and the walls turned to blood and omg it scared the you know what out of me. I would recommend this game to anyone over 18. It was so worth the [...] bucks I paid for it. And its like watching a dvd. The graphics are the best and the sound omg. It will be the best game you ever played. | 5 | 801 days ago | stale, generic FPS wrapped in a nice engine If you like seeing what they're doing with game graphics, go ahead and play this. You'll be very impressed for a few minutes.

The rest of your time will be split between 2 things:
1) walking through warehouse after warehouse filled with cardboard boxes and crates. i'm not kidding. crates. this game mechanic was stale over a decade ago.

2) watching predictably placed cutscenes where a character lifted straight from the ring "terrorizes you". this is in quotes because it's really not suspenseful or scary, seemingly there to give the game an illusion of plot.

so if you enjoy walking through crate filled warehouses, killing the same enemies repeatedly, then down a long hallway where you know a cutscene is coming, then watching the cutscene unfold in a faux-jhorror way... more power to you, buy this game.
I don't, and therefore I couldn't even get past 2 hours before I had no interest in ever playing this again. | 2 | 781 days ago | Stupid game ruined Final Fantasy IX for me I'm not a first-person shooter fan. As a videogame journalist once said, "Look down when you're climbing a ladder and you'll see why." I don't like the way you're a floating gun that shoots at things that move, and the way they press for realism when the entire way you PLAY the game is anything but (swiveling your whole body to look to your right, holding your gun in front of your face 24/7, etc. Just dumb).

F.E.A.R., fortunately, is one of those shooters in which you do possess a body if you look down..but your movements are still stuck in the same old FPS mode we've had since Wolfenstein.

So, why did I give this game 5 stars when I obviously don't like FPS and it apparently ruined a 10-year old PS1 RPG for me? Sit back and I'll explain.

This game...rocks. It is a blast to play. Slowing things down in a FPS with beautiful graphics like this is art. The enemy soldiers have AI that's equivalent to a real person (except they act like real people in the game world, not real people exploiting a videogame online).

The story is just incredible. It explains why you have these powers, you're not all-powerful simply because you're the main character. There's a good reason for why you have the powers you do, and why you alone have gotten as far as you have (unlike Gordon Superman Freeman). We have a main "villian" who has reasons for doing the things she does. We have characters who are pulling the strings from the sidelines.

And that is why Final Fantasy IX was ruined for me. I was playing it over spring break, when the Sam Goody in town went out of business, and we got F.E.A.R. for cheap. So I played it. And it's just one of those games that are FUN to play (I suddenly realized Final Fantasy IX was not fun), and the story is just awesome - truly adult (unlike so many of the Final Fantasy games, where the world and everyone in it revolves around one unstoppable hero).
Picture this | 5 | 780 days ago | Nothing beats it! F.E.A.R. is a masterpiece. Great graphics, good physics, incredible gameplay, and an engaging storyline make it an unmissable game. Anyone who has not tried this game is definitely missing out.
Something that is really cool is the vocal effects. The voices of the characters are clear and unique, and they all say what you'd really expect them to say.
F.E.A.R. is often acknowledged for it's AI (artificial intellegence). The characters will adapt to your combat strategies and react accordingly. Of course, it does have its glitches and mishaps, but no other game can match the AI of F.E.A.R.
No game is truly perfect. Something that is a bit irritating is the fact that you really shouldn't even TRY to play this game in daylight if there are windows nearby. The sun will reflect off the screen and make you completely blind to whats going on in the game. That is, actually, at first. If you are patient enough your eyes will eventually adjust, but it still is a pain in the neck to deal with.
Multiplayer is fast-paced. It's really tough to get used to and many people would suggest that you play through Single Player a couple times first. Either way, it's loads of fun. And don't worry about Single Player getting old after the tenth time through, because it really never gets old to begin with! The replay value is great because there are so many possible outcomes.
Overall, this game should not be absent from your collection. It's a lot of fun! All true gamers should have this game.

PROS
1) Great graphics, good physics, incredible gameplay, and an engaging storyline
2) Never gets boring no matter how many times you play it!
3) Unmatched artificial intelligence

CONS
1) When you first start playing, if it is daylight out, the sun will reflect off the screen. The reason for this is that the game is very dark, as it is intended to be played later in the day. | 5 | 780 days ago | Very good I found fear to be one of the best games around now.It is a intense shooter and very challenging. But after playing games like FarCry,Boiling Point and GTA Vice City it seems to be a small step backwards in the gamming community. | 4 | 767 days ago | Fear Full of Fun Very good game.
Fantastic visuals.
Super attack scenes.
Great Artificial Intelligence.
On medium settings it's not too hard and not too easy; just about right!
The story is pretty good and while the puzzles aren't all that hard, there are hardly any really, the creepy value more than makes up for it.
If you like shooters with smart enemies and great graphics this is a fun game.
| 4 | 767 days ago | Stop complaining. First off, I want to tell everyone with a 6-series graphics card to uprade! This game is too much for anything except the geforce 7900gtx, 7950gx2, or radeon x1900xt or xtx, unless you want to move into a multi gpu pc. This game is insane, with intense realism and amazing graphics. Admittedly this games story is a little hard to follow, but if you want a great story go play ff7. Bottom line is that there is no system lag IF you have the hardware, and the battle system is incredibly addictive and fun. I have an opteron 144 oc'd to 2.8, 2 gigs of ocz el patinum, and a 7900gtx, and I run this game at settings maxed out, with the frame rate never dropping below 30fps. If you want a great online shooter, than go buy battlefield 2, but if you want a great single player horror adventure, than BUY THIS GAME!!!
P.S. Please, no one say that the gore and violence is too much. Don't be a wuss. I see worse things on news at noon. | 5 | 767 days ago | THERE'S NOTHING TO FEAR BUT F.E.A.R. ITSELF Wow! I just finished this game a few minutes ago and my body STILL feels a bit chilled! I have to say that I was really impressed with this game, especially the ending. As for everything else, I'll break those down below:

GRAPHICS: 4/5 STARS. I don't value graphics all *that* highly, but the lighting effects (and others), were absolutely wonderful. And I'm not even playing on a fancy computer (it's just a Dell Latitude D620, by no means a gaming machine).

SOUND/MUSIC: 4.5/5 STARS. There isn't much real MUSIC in this game, but the sound effects are definitely creepy enough to set the setting. Especially the high-pitched "Psycho" type sounds when something really scary happens to you.

STORY: 4/5 STARS. To be honest I didn't pay as much attention to the story as I should have (voice mails and laptop audio), but I still got the gist of it all. Guess I'll have to play through it again, but I won't mind that. Basically, if you take Hannibal Lecter and the girl from "The Ring" in this video game, add a creepy storyline revolving around the paranormal and a birth gone wrong, this will equal the ingredients for one helluva story. If nothing else, the paranormal aspect of the game is so refreshing after games with plots like, "experiment gone awry" and "kill every Nazi in sight".
I beat the game in about 20 hours, which seemed pretty adequate to me.

FRIGHT FACTOR: 4.5/5 STARS: This is where this game truly shines and probably what you'll remember it best for. I remember getting a few chills in Doom 3, but F.E.A.R. had moments where I was CHILLING--especially towards the end. The scariest level by far was "Alice Wade" and then the last level.
Remember in movies like "Predator 2" where guys just shoot in every direction because they don't know what's attacking them? I had more than a few of those moments. Sometimes you'll even find yourself shooting at things you know you can't kill!
There is blood in | 4 | 767 days ago | A Class Act I don't know how anyone can not like this game. FEAR is a class act from start to finish. I bought FEAR and HL2 around the same time. I played HL2 once and then played FEAR. I was so blown away by FEAR I found myself playing it over and over on every setting. In my opinion everything about FEAR is superb. The weapons and firefights are the most vicious and satisfying I have ever experienced in a game, unlike those pathetic pea-shooters we were given in D3. The graphics and character models are excellent, but above all the music and sound effects (including the character voices) create a truly creepy and atmospheric feel unmatched by any other game. There's even a bit of humour thrown in with the hilarious but treacherous Norton Mapes character, a computer-programmers "inside" joke, a parody of the overweight slobby programmer, and the very funny voice-mail on his desk phone. FEAR also has the most stylish ending I've ever seen in any game. Im looking forward to an expansion pack or sequel for this more eagerly than I am awaiting the HL2 sequels. | 5 | 767 days ago |
