Video and TV and children – a powerful mix!

by BeckyD on October 31, 2013

We’ve just finished a week’s training in the Middle East for KidsHubTV (local TV shows run by and for children) and KidsHubs media lessons (teaching small groups of children how to tell stories through video). 28 people gathered with a wide scope of experience – some were already producing children’s television while others were just beginning on the road in training kids in media and thinking of how to use these skills more. We had people from the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, USA and Australia.

We started by exploring the core concept of KidsHubs which is ‘walking along the road and teaching children’ – teaching skills along with the Bible in a relational style to small groups of kids (if possible). Then we helped to lead a training day for local churches with different participants offering short sessions on puppetry, sport, drama, music, video and animation.  The final days were spent looking at the KidsHubTV model and how it can be adapted for different contexts. The KidsHub Media training was also run with the delegates and a small group of children each afternoon.  Delegates were sent home with a USB drive with everything they’d need to create their own version of KidsHubTV and train children in media.

DSC_5910The response from delegates was encouraging. A young man working in a slum area of Kampala, Uganda sent back photos of him training a group of kids in the KidsHub Media lessons within days of him touching down in his country. A Christian radio producer from Tanzania – who has been broadcasting a weekly radio show run by children – was keen to move into TV broadcast and use local kids to create their own KidsHubTV. Attendees from a closed country shared their plans to tape programs and distribute them via USB drives. And many more delegates spoke of their excitement to apply what they’ve learnt when they returned.

In the next few months we will be brainstorming individually with the participants and their teams to come up with their own versions of training and video programming. Please continue to pray for new opportunities!

I am one among those who attended this training in the Middle East, I tell you it is unbelievable to see what God is about to do among children here in Burundi after taking that training. Soon we will be shooting our first kidsHubTV show. Kids are able, more able than we think they are, train them and give then an opportunity and you will be amazed. I thank God for such an opportunity to attend the training.

I was excited to about the young man from Uganda’s quick action. We have found him quite passionate as we partner with him as OneHope Uganda.
